  1. Eye was at Toshiba Tall Ships Festival as the Gunner with the Jolly Boat pirates in port, at Dana Point CA.

We were performing against the a British Group who are the (Naval Historical Foundation) to free our captain Jean Laffette.

We were using Black Powder extensively through out this skit both on the Jolly Boat and on board

the Pilgrim ( Which stayed in port during the incident ) and were supervised very closely by the coast guard whom kept other boaters in the area away from us during our performances. So we had a bunch of fun on Saturday.

However, by Early Sunday Morning, word reached us, that the Ocean institutes Black Powder Permit had been pulled

which kinda put the kabosh on our performance..The Shows went on anyhow with out BP and we went on with the boarding action, sword fighting and shouting..improvising the best we could.

Of Note is that we were committed to safety and did nothing wrong, yet were adversely affected by some one else actions, most likely due to lack of training. The Ocean institute use to out source all BP firings off their ships by a friend eye know who has a licence and the experience to do this stuff safely. However in order to save money, the institute let him go a few years ago and thought to train their sail crew to perform BP duties. This incident sorta points out the fact Why there is the designation/position of Gunner on board a ship, whose soul attention was weapons/ordinance and not sailing a ship. Personally eye think the distractions can be many if you are being duely charged with responsibilities.

It makes no sense to me why live ammo was present at the institute or on Board a tall Ship.

Any how, more importantly was that no one was seriously hurt in the incident during the cannon battles they have out at sea, but two persons were in fact sprayed with what they think was Bird shot during the Tall ships cannon battles at sea.

  2. Eye have had fun with the plank as a gag at fairs..

Eye was playing the Girls Liars dice and lost

my wager.. My punishment was to walk the plank!

The real experience, was on the Wolf

during PIP 2009 Walk the plank contest. Alot of us here

on this web site jumped with the prompting of a cutlass.

The link to that is on this web site buried with other treasures.

Even though eye know it is not period

thar are some things eye like

    for entertainment purposes.

The Plank is one of them. plank-1.jpg

  3. Funny how long this saying has been around..in the modern surfing circuit community ,

New surfers who are young teens are often referred to as Grommets as well.

  4. Eye just got a book called "The Chronicle of Western Costume" by John Peacock

On page 105 it clearly shows an illustration of an Englishman in 1600 wearing stripey socks, Horizontal

like the ones eye wore in the "You and Your Garb" thread. Again..NO real evidence to support whether the

author or artist took licence or not. All the other illustrations show no Stripey socks what so ever During GAOP. (1670 -1730)

    In 1670 June 1st

English king Charles II and French king Louis XIV sign anti-Dutch treaty

..We all know what that lead to.. And 1671 January 18 "Pirate" Henry Morgan defeats Spanish defenders, captures Panama January 27 "Pirate" Henry Morgen lands at Panama City

  5. Had either of the authors of the web sites included some bibliographical reference

It crossed my mind to ask for their references as it seemed stated that stripey socks were popular

during the years of GAOP . However with out any substantiation to provide any historic proof.. Therefore Eye

do conclude that it would have been a most rare thing for a Pirate of the GAOP to wear stripey socks.

Eye have been unable to find proof as much as my heart would like. Therefore eye will side with you that they most likely

did not exsist. One thing eye will say going down this road is that this wreaks of Agnosticism at its best.

Eye did -e- mail the one web site and await an answer from them..this is what eye wrote to the 'Sock Museum"

"As A member of the reenactment community that portrays pirates, We have been unable to substantiate your claims to stripey socks being period to Pirates of the Golden age of Piracy. 1630-1720's . We are interested in your historical references you used to make these claims. Thank you."
