  1. Thank you for the compliments and setting me straight on the socks.. Eye most likely will have to go wit a straight colored sock for any hard core reenactment events eye attend.. Only two on the west coast for pirates that eye know of. And they are not exclusive to Pirates of the GAOP..they are time line events. In some aspects are more interesting that say a Ren Faire, which Eye have really lost any zeal for. (Though good to go for being with friends.) Eye will look into getting a Match lock to go with this Kit and maybe next year look to come to an East coast event that is about being period and is Pyrate centric. Eye am still unclear about the type of Hat that "COULD" be worn with this kit to be completely Authentic. Eye am still ok with wearing my buckle shoes though eye may and should go with the laced up type. Any suggestions you have eye am open to it. Just PM me to help this thread stay on Topic. Thanx.

12 th-century cotton sock, found in

    Egypt

. The knitter of this sock

started work at the toe and then worked up towards the leg.

The heel was made last and then attached to loops formed while

knitting the leg. This practice allowed the heel to be easily replaced

    when it wore out.

So based onthe above account. I personally cannot rule out that striped socks did not exist

Before 1740..that really is absurd from my point of view.. I looked up the History

of socks and found several web sites that cover the history of socks. Considering

The invention of a knitting machine in 1589 meant that socks could be knitted six times

faster than by hand and in many designs and colors.

A couple of the webs sites eye had check do mention stripped socks after the knitting machine was invented.

However eye will say that ~ that style was probably not as common as well as the type of sock that were

embroidered with personal emblems to fashionably identify ones personal socks. Another note is that pirates of the GAOP were still just people like you and eye and had fashionable taste. No one wears exactly the same clothing now any more than they did back then. There was a variety of styles and fashions of clothing/socks available to wear.

So just maybe..maybe one pirate did in fact wear a pair of stripey socks that is so popular in todays cultural portrayal of pirates of the GAOP. But again it is still debatable... because unlike the other web sites eye checked . ~

"At the very end of the century (1790s) very fancy striped stockings become fashionable; with the exception of a possible example worn by a sailor in a mid-18th c. illustration, striped stockings don't seem to have been common before the end of the 18th century. Ribbed stockings, however, were worn." This is from the web site salt pots posted.

  3. eagh eagh...> Eye can see it now...some convention for Pyrate Punks with laser blunderbuss and mechanized glowin the dark bucket boots ~

  4. This is a re-post for mission to see the clothing better.. Eye am stoked it all fit so well...

That's a good question about stripey socks..When did they come on the scene? Eye kinda think they are more of a Hollyweird thing than period to pirates in general during the GAOP though eye believe they were popular during the European Renaissance of the 14th–17th centuries ~

  5. Based on a period painting of Pieter Codde 1599- 1678

Eye finally invested a few bucks had had this all made from scratch. The Apostles are from Ivan Henry

but eye stained the bottles and dyed the belt black. The Buttons on this jacket are wooden.

Guess all eye need to do now is score on a match lock

  6. Them be some fierce and scary pirates! Eye loved how well they impressed that part of their characters in their roles. After that eye fell asleep from a bit of Grog and long day at a Faire so eye misses from the island bombardment on. Eye suppose eye will buy this on DVD when it becomes available.

  7. GREAT NEWS !

    - Dennis Holland and the city of Newport Beach have settled. He's agreed to take Shawnee apart and shift her to a different part of his property (behind the house), so the vessel will not be visible from the street. True, this will involve some extra work, but it allows Shawnee to stay at his house, making it much easier for him to work on her than if she had to move elsewhere. He's got 120 days to move the vessel, and could use some helpers.

    We made a difference!

  8. Google the weather in Vallejo Ca. Normally it is any whare for 60 at night to 80 in the day during the festival..

It can get windy at times. However that is not a big deal at this event.. Eye am putting on a show from the Tales encampment

for kids. Adults in garb will be encouraged to be apart of this too. The Skit Eye am producing is posted on the Tales site on Face Book.

  10. Eye thought Taylor was with Le Buse when they plundered the Cabo based on this. >

"Historians believe that cached somewhere in this far-flung archipelago are the plunders of Olivier Le Vasseur, aka La Buse, or the Buzzard, a French pirate who roamed the Indian Ocean during the early 1700s. In 1721, La Buse, along with English pirate John Taylor and their crews, ransacked the Nossa Senhora do Cabo, a Portuguese frigate undergoing repairs near Mauritius, about 1,000 miles south of the Seychelles. The Cabo carried gold, uncut diamonds and church regalia belonging to the retiring viceroy of Goa. At the time, Goa was a Portuguese colony on the west coast of present-day India. La Buse and Taylor made off with the treasure—then valued at more than a million pounds sterling"
