Rumba, What happened? I was on the first list and now I seem to have disappeared. Can't I play, too? Blackbead

All my best to the pirate who inspired "The Angel of Death"! Looks like me own mate may have to endure a similar trial . . .

Re-reading The Mammoth Book of Sword and Honor, edited by Mike Ashley. It includes "The Duel," by Joseph Conrad, upon which the film "The Duelists" was based. Ridley Scott directed it and after seeing "2012", I wish the earlier film had had a budget comparable. I can't help but imagine some of the CGI battle scenes! Blackbead

Thank ye, Captain Darksoul! I dream of one day doing this film with three main actors - one to play "the narrator", one to play "the laughing unbeliever", and one to play "the lovely senorita." If it could be done where the whole thing is acted out that would be wonderful but doing it just like the film here but adding a scene where the lovely senorita (complete with eyes eaten out and lips eaten off) leads the laughing unbeliever into a dark, cavern-like chamber with an eldritch mist and several other pirates standing, undead, in the room would be an excellent way to end the piece - especially with them all speaking in unison: "She walks the deck at midnight . . ." Someday . . .

Oi! For placing that superlative limerick within the parameters of this topic, Ransom, you must be rewarded! Your reward, as proscribed by the Court of Pirate Law, is to quaff a slug of bumbo! As we all know, bumbo is made by introducing two ounces of rum to one ounce of chilled water and mixing in two sugar cubes, a dash of nutmeg, and, if you wish, a dash of cinnamon. Get to it!

Thank ye, mate! I'm thinking about adding some more stanzas and your comments make me feel like it'd be worth it!

Here be a a short one - http://www.youtube.com/user/BlackbeadthePirate#p/a/u/0/Zigbr_Ie9DA I've always wanted to redo this one with a whole cast, better sets, etc. The soundtrack is a piece by my youngest brother but he would love to write something specifically for it. Let me know what you think! VERY nice, Hurricane! But those CGI clips look kinda familiar. Well done, Bright!

An Ode to Rum Oh, nut-brown companion of humid tropic nights! Oh, intoxicating nectar of the fertile gods! In passion, you enhance all my earthly delights, In battle, you wildly bolster my martial odds. Born in the planters’ verdant sugarcane fields, Jack Tar has taken you to the ends of this world And I pray that you await me in the Kingdom to come! But with all the wonders that your enjoyment yields And all the garlands your faithful imbibers have hurled, Surely, you merit a grander title than simply “rum”. Stephen Sanders ©2009

Okay, okay, it was the original "The Haunting". How about this one - "We've an old proverb in England that says, 'Those who sail without oars stay on good terms with the wind'."

Ahoy, Brennan, me lad! Needin' a name are ye? One ye can hide behind when the King's men be lookin' for ye . . . well, let me see. I once knew of a man who hid for years behind the name "John Nelligan" but I don't think that'd be exciting enough for ye. What's your favorite thing about ye? If ye had a long beard, we could call ye "Longbeard" or if ye were really fast with yer cutlass we could call ye "Swifty" or if ye like to make sure ALL of yer crew gets a fair share of the swag then we'd call ye "Honest John." So we need to know more about ye lad. What's your favorite pirate of all time? Till ye can think of something, would ye like to hear a tale of a brave pirate, a sea battle, and the moment that changed his life? Your mate through thick and thin, Blackbead

It's the end of the World as we know it....
Blackbead replied to Patrick Hand's topic in Beyond Pyracy
No, no, Rumba! It's just the end of the world. The Pub will go on . . . As for the music I'll have playing when it happens, I'm thinking the reprise of O Fortuna at the end of Orff's Carmina Burana might be just the ticket! -
It's a scary movie that was remade a few years ago. Julie Harris played the main character.

The more I read, the more it appears that this is going to be a lot of fun, some decent movies, and a big anticlimax. On the other hand, I just ordered a t-shirt that says, "Party like it's December 2012" in Mayan petroglyphs. I've also set December 20, 2012 as the new deadline for me to be debt free. Let's party . . . -

Okay, the flick was "A Walk in the Sun." So, to celebrate the season . . . "We who walk here, walk alone."

LOL! I was sitting here thinking that sure sounded familiar when I realized who your "buddies" are! Enjoy! By the way, the movie I quoted from is centered around the Salerno invasion. If that helps.

This one is a little off the wall . . . it was more of a psychological study when it was first made but then has made a comeback as a B-rated war movie because no one kept up the copyrights on it. It was made in 1945, released on Christmas Day, and has a star-studded cast, for the time, Dana Andrews, Richard Conte, Lloyd Bridges. The subject is a historical invasion but it's not one that has been featured very much in film.

Get one right and you can put up whatever quote you want!

I thought I recalled it and I went home and watched the movie again. It is definitely a great movie with some fantastic lines. I went to see "Memphis Belle" hoping that it would be as good as "TOH" but it just couldn't measure up. How about this one: First speaker: You ever think you'll live to make corporal? Second speaker: Baby, I just want to live long enough to make civilian.

I’m sitting here, trying to collect my thoughts, after returning from the Texas Renaissance Festival’s “Pirate Adventure” Weekend. It was an excellent weekend! We set sail anticipating nothing more than another event spent hawking the book and making a few sales and I returned home after experiencing so very much more! First, I cannot express my gratitude enough to our host, Mr. James Huckabay of Creatyve Lyfe Books, his lovely wife, and his helpful and friendly staff, especially Lisa. Great directions, going out of their way to make sure we got where we needed to go, providing ice and water to make sure we didn’t go overboard in the heat of the day, setting up the table the second day even before I could get into the faire, the list goes on and on. One of the best “blessings” of this weekend was the gift of new friendship and I look forward to them lasting for a long time! That includes you, sweet “Molly”! Second, we were overwhelmed with the wonderful reception by the cast and crew of the Texas Renaissance Faire. So many people stopped by the table to talk about the book, to listen to some of the poems, and to spend some of their own hard-earned money to take home a copy! I know we were only guests but before we left we felt like family! Thank you, TRF! Third, I got to meet, hug, and share some time with Flora Alomari, AKA Captain Taffy Saltwater. One of my dearest dreams is to someday have a meeting of all of the poets and artists involved in Raising Black Flags. I don’t know if it will ever happen but it I took a very pleasant step in that direction Saturday when Captain Saltwater joined us at table! Finally, we made some excellent friends, handed out many cards, sold quite a few books and CDs, and made at least one connection that will get Raising Black Flags in front of a whole new audience. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of our friends who came by the table and said, “hello” and to all of the new friends we made! HUZZAH, Texas Renaissance Faire; HUZZAH, friend Ravic!!

Damn! And I JUST watched "Hatari" not too long ago! Excellent quote! I think I know the next one but I'm going to have to go home and watch it tonight.

Hello, everyone! If you are looking for something to celebrate the Mayan Calendar social phenomenon being hyped in the new movie "2012", you might try taking a look at www.zazzle.com/CaptainJJ! I go there for wargamer t-shirts ("I'd rather be commanding a battalion of King Tigers" or "My Other Car is a M4a3E8") but they also have a bunch of "Party Like It's December 20, 2012!" t-shirts, some of them even in Mayan ideograms! Get 'em while they're hot!
