  1. Happy belated Matt. (Got your phone message. We're sorry, but we don't have the money to bail you out.)
  2. Mike: "Hey Hector, you comin' over Sunday to watch the game with us?" Hector: "Yeah, I'll be over in the afternoon after I take care of some yard work. Last night someone cut down the saplings we'd planted in the front yard." Mike: "That sucks! Any idea who done it?" Hector: "Probably neighbor kids. There were a few tracks... and one of 'em left us a yellow skull & crossbones in the snow."
  3. Indeed. It's generally accepted that lamb is best enjoyed with a good red.
  4. From the Publishers Preface "The General Design of this Work, is to not only serve those who are bred to the sword but all that pretend to a Gentlemanlike Education..." Haha... looks like another must-have for the collection. Thanks for posting!
  5. Happy BDay Stinky. Thanks again for your tech assistance. Found some leftover deviled eggs from Thanksgiving in the trunk this morning. They'll be headed out to you via Parcel Post on Monday. =)
  6. I haven't seen this on the forum before and was going to add it to Capt Trueblood's post http://pyracy.com/in...showtopic=18398 but I think this is worthy of a separate thread. The complete title is... Medicinal Experiments or a Collection of Choice and Safe Remedies, For the Most Part Simple and Easily Prepared: Very Useful in Families and Fitted for the Service of Country People by the Honourable R.Boyle, Esq. Fellow of the Royal Society It was recently republished but I haven't seen a hard copy in person nor read any reviews regarding quality of reproduction. References ISBN 124084249X, 1171257163 or 978-1171257165, 978-1171393351 etc. As of writing, there are portions of a third edition viewable on Google books. This edition was published in London in 1696 after Boyle's demise. The current links in the index pages, (which unfortunately don't start until the letter "C") include such things as healing powder burns with cow dung, assorted remedies for cuts and wounds, the French-Pox, gangrene, hemorrhoids, scurvy, etc., etc. http://books.google....epage&q&f=false Here's a sample for gout... "135: A homely but often try'd Medicine to appease the Pains of Scorbutical Running Gouts Take Earth-worms, cleans'd, and having fill'd an earthen Pot with them, and luted on a cover very well, set it into an Oven with a batch of Bread, and let it stand there till the Oven be cold. Then take out the Pot, and having remov'd the cover, you will find the Matter turned into a gross Liquor ill scented. Strain this with expression, and keep it stopt for use, which is, to rub therewith the Part affected with a warm hand once or twice a day. N.B. If the smell be offensive, you may put to it a few drops of Oyl of Rhodium, or some other Odoriferous one, to Correct it." Good stuff here. Just like granny used to make before she got roasted at the stake.
  7. Excellent links Capt T. Re: "OOP" ...The writings by De Fourcroy are showing up on Amazon & eBay. Are we looking at something different? The Internet is keeping us spoiled. We haven't been to a brick & mortar library in years.
  8. Yea! With no regular sleep patterns developed, someone will have an excuse to stay online all night.
  9. Haha... that is awesome. (I think we know a couple ladies that get a little crazy with the eyebrow tweezing too.)
  10. The illustration of "Ein Spanischer Officier" by Dutch artist Caspar Luyken is from a German book published in 1703 entitled Neu-eröffnete Welt-Galleria. This link provides some pretty good scans... http://diglib.hab.de...drucke/wt-4f-93 A Dover reproduction got a mention on the Forum here courtesy of Capt. Sterling ... http://pyracy.com/in...?showtopic=9515
  11. Bos'n - You're welcome. Glad to be of some assistance. Ditto regard input from others too. I enjoy the challenge of the hunt. This seems to be an important item that crews should consider having for their inventory.
  12. Only that the piece is part of the collection at the Rotterdam Museum.
  13. (We were all gonna' pitch in to get you a singing stripper, but there were only women available today.)
  14. Louisiana J - So far, the only ones I've seen with lower storage have been the later, 19th & 20th century ones. Korisios - "quids"??
  15. And today, the day following America's Thanksgiving celebration, we'd like to wish "good luck" to those from coast-to-coast who may be attempting to sleep in this morning after the evening's revelry with family and/or friends. We'd like to wish good luck to those participating in today's "Black Friday" sales event too. Whether as a participant or as fearless employee, store manager or civil servant risking life 'n' limb braving the ensuing chaos. We'd like to wish good luck to the student that's enjoying another vacation day off from school, and that might be engaged in a game of chance via PlayStation or similar manifestation. Finally, we'd like to wish good luck to the neighbor dog or cat who, at this very moment, is searching their favorite grassy perimeter for the mixed drink-turkey-yam and green bean smoothie that was deposited there last night by some overly enthusiastic but generous party-goer.
