The look of the mermaids owes it all to Brian Froud who was the conceptual artitist. Ever see his book Fairies? He was also the conceptual artitist for "Dark Crystal" and "Labryanth ".

There was a whole thread on here some months ago. It was even revived when the DVD came out. It just went away is all. It was a great movie! Russell Crowe is a fine actor but a lousy human being.

I believe tickets for sailing at Tall Ships are running about $40.00. You have to contact the Orange County Marine Institute about sailing. It may be too late now. The sails are filled up by now usually. You have to book those things like in Feb. or earlier! there. Rumba Rue **Forget the yo ho ho, just gimme the bottle!** I don't know why your friends had to reserve a year in advance Rumba Rue the site says tickets don't go on sale till August 15th. Here a link with info about tickets: http://tallshipsfestival.com/events.html Maybe you can still get some! :)

Happy Birthday, Black Hearted Pearl!!!
Red Maria replied to Captian Wolfy Wench's topic in Scuttlebutt
A slightly belated Happy Birthday BHP! I hope your maiden voyage was a success! :) and many more adventures to come! Best wishes and hope you had a grand time! :) Remember your as young as you feel! -
I'm glad you had a good time Capt. Grey! :) I went to last day with me other crew The Ravenheart. Hotter that Hades but fun! Picked-up a pendant I heard about from my former roommmate. It looks a snake sleep on two round rocks but when you pull a secret chain it gets "excited" Definately not a snake! It's silver and very well crafted. Two weeks before I bought a cursed Aztec coin on a string at a booth. When I got home I discovered that was some flaws in the gold plating so I ttook it back with me this time to exchange it. When I did the lady behind the counter said "I don't have anymore on string so here's 2" And hands me my old coin back and a perfect stringless one! Is that cool or what?! Saw Karen, Deb, & Jerry, hobnobbed with some old Faire friends, and had a really good time. The day finally took it's toll on me at dinner. I crashed and burned. I guess I'm still not fully recovered from the concussion.

I can answer for that lad.... A few they had, of all sizes and price. (Most a very DEAR price) but well worth the look. Happy plundering! Thanks Iron Bess! What she said. :)

I forgot to add that I still have tickets for $10.00 coupons available.

Sez who? OK maybe I'm wrong?! Is that unserwear on your head?!
-
I say a wee bit of both. As far as coats go depends on the weathe if it's hot like Zorg says then no coats. If it cold then coats. You're a pirate not an idiot! :)

If anyone can drive and wants to go either May 29 or 31 I have an extra free pass for last weekend. I'm trying to move May 30 so I can't go that day. I'll still chip in for gas. :-)

Yeah mine was a bit loose when I got it. Things can shift in shipping. All I did is tighten it and it's been a dream since. :)

History Channel Program "Lost City of Pirates"
Red Maria replied to Wartooth's topic in Captain Twill
I agree. What some historians tend to ignore is the fact that in most tribal cultures and communities (of which a pirate ship would certainly be included), dressing in finery was more of a "Hey, look at me ... I'm better than you!" statement. Look at the various germanic tribes, mongol hordes, native indian tribes, etc. The strongest and best warriors tended to dress more vibrantly and elaborately. Same in nature. The male birds with the most colorful and flamboyant plumage wins the wenches ... errr ... female birds. Wartooth The 17th through 18th centuiries flambouancy in male dress was the rule! Acting foppish was fashionable! It wasn't a reflection on a man's sexuality. :) -
History Channel Program "Lost City of Pirates"
Red Maria replied to Wartooth's topic in Captain Twill
Sounds like someone has read too much Berg. There were gay pirates but the vast majority were straight. As to wearing silks and dressing like dandies well if part of your share of booty includes fine clothes you're going to wear them! Curse the sumpturary laws! I didn't see the program and I don't recall seeeing it in the cable gudie last night. Maybe it will show again and I can give you a better assesment on how good it is. Not all the HC & HCI are badly made documentaries. The recent Kidd one was quiet good. -
Here's a website with some titles towards the bottom http://www.allfiberarts.com/cs/dyes.htm Also on the website are some recipes http://www.allfiberarts.com/library/howto/ Just quickly for reds madder as Zorg said also cochineal which is a beetle that inhabits cactus. I am harvesting some from the desert garden hopefully enough to dye some silk brocade for a costume. Yellows weld, lady's bedstraw and dyer's marigold to name a few. Blues indigo and of course woad. Funny that this came up cause yeaterday I harvested a huge amount of woad from the herb garden here and I'm looking for someone with a big enough pot to process it. If anyone in th So Cal area can help you can get some free woad! I was also suppose to get some weld in order to make Saxon Green ((dye fabric first with weld then over dye with woad) but the weld was harvested while the herb garden curator was on vacation so I'm SOL. Anyone out there got weld? Hope that helps :)

Went to Southern with Iron Bess this last Saturday ( May 15). We were treated to free passes and Friends of Faire by our fellow PRP Nom de Plume. I was told by my ex-roommate that the woman I worked for last year (who runs the make-a-necklace booth)had opened an all pirate booth in Trader's Row. Sure enough there it was! All sorts of piratical beads and pins, replica guns and swords. I picked-up a mermaid perfume bottle and some skull beads. :) So if you go to Faire check out Pirate's Cove in Traders Row!

I saw Van Helsing over the weekend. The gaurd on the cutlass in question is the same as mine. The blade on it however is no doubt aircraft aluminum as are all movie swords are nowadays.
-
I haven't seen the movie but I have been told that it is similar to my cutlass. Proably something Tony Swanton cooked up using a cutlass like mine but with an aluminum blade. All I can say is the girl has taste! I'll have to see the movie now. :)

Oh these fairies are more like what fairies as suppose to be like. Sometimes good sometimes nasty always unpredictable. The mermaids are not Ariel! They are the mermaids of folklore beguiling and trecherous. If you look closely you'll see a pirate or two from POTC. Definately not you standard panto Peter Pan! :)
