True it is. this is what David Moore who is an archeologist with the QAR project sent me a couple of days ago: Well, TECHNICALLY we're back to work. First time to excavate on the site since Oct 2004. Unfortunately, its only for this week. And only reason they made decision to work at all is that the guy who found the site back in '96 is raising holy hell with some of the folks in Raleigh which essentially forced them into doing "something" on the site. We did find the 23rd cannon on the site yesterday however, and a number of ship's rigging elements and small iron cooking pot this afternoon

You go in fill out an application gives them I think $50.00 for the first year ($45.00 therafter) and you gets a card. I'm single and I still find uses for that card. They have the best gas prices around and when I buy breakfast sausage for PRP encampments I get it there. Also good beer prices. It does come in handy. :)

Question on Battle-Worthy Cutlasses
Red Maria replied to TalesOfTheSevenSeas's topic in Thieves Market
For safety reasons alone you need to blunt the Cold Steel blade! Or else it could cut someone bad that someone might be you lass! :) -
Heck you already know I'm interested Bess!

Mine aren't square toed but I got me bucket boots at a thrift store for $2.00. I'm a size 6 ladies. So just keep you eyes open.

Yup, Once I was out of that durn ride! I haven't to Disneyland for many years. If I can find someone/s to go with I'd like to go on my birthday this year (Dec 16). :)

BTW I should mention there are other options for pirate blades. There are sabers, mortuary blades and even Scottish baskethilt broadswords. Remember Blackbeard was killed by a broadsword wielding Scot. :)
-
DeCouer What do you base this on? Please show me sources. The reason it's called piracy is because it mostly took place on water not land. Yes there were some land raids but they were few. DeCouer That was me. I didn't even get into transitional blades! Rapier was still a gentleman's weapon. Look at Romeo & Juliet for example. The common man uses a sword and buckle but the nobility use the rapier. Sword and buckle was the common man's weapon not the rapier. I too have a rapier and main gauche but I don't use them for any maritime work whatever the era. Yes I know the remains of a rapier was found on the Mary Rose but that doesn't mean it was used as a weapon. Remember rapier comes from Espadas de roperas. A sword worn with clothing as oppose to armour. It's a dress sword. I love rapier work but I don't think it belong in martime (e.g. pirate) combat. Just my two cents.

The second photo is like the one I have. Heavy but the balance is great!

If you're fighting the Golden Age of Piracy then rapier is not period, period. It had been replaced by the small sword in the late 17th century. Both rapier & small swords were gemtleman's weapons and were not used by the common sailore (or soildeer). The cutlass (call ity a hanger if you wish) was the common weapon of both sailor and pirate alike.

This is a good book. The inresting thing about the documentary is that it's about Barbary corsairs who left the Mediterranean and raid the coast of Southern England and Ireland. There is the story of Baltimore Ireland had almost the entire population of 300 people captured. Men women and children. The town never recovered and was abandoned. These corsairs raided as far as Iceland. Another interesting thing about this shipwreck is that therre were Dutch objects aborad ship. This mislead archeologist to beleive that it was a Dutch merchant ship. In fact there were Dutch who had turned Turk (converted to Islam) on board the ship.

Just be gald you weren't stuck in it for over an hour! I was once and have lived to tell the tale!

I saw this last night on the History channel. A little know piece of pirate history. Babray pirates arid the southern coasts of England and Ireland. I'm not sure when it will play again but when it does watch it! White Slaves Pirate Gold In 1995, amateur marine archaeologists made an important and valuable discovery of Islamic gold. But what was the 17th century vessel, laden with treasure, doing off England's coast? For the first time, a professional team explores the site in attempt to reveal the vessel's true identity. Could it be the wreck of a Barbary pirate ship? For 200 years, Barbary pirates plundered shipping and coastal villages, taking over a million "white slaves" to be ransomed or sold in North African slave markets.

Actually the Pirate Faire is in Ojai. One of the regular Ren Faires they do is in Escondidio.

Zorg I'm glad to see you're finally back. I've known Zorg for over a deacde and know he is not a reckless person. This was a fluke accident and should in no way reflect on him as a person. Zorg is noramlly a conscientious person who puts safety first. He made a inprudent mistake that harmed himself most of all. I'm glad he is in one piece. Juryrig please have the grace to forgive him. He's a good man. He is loyal, supportive, and a genuinely good person. One mistake should'nt cancel out all that. He has learned a hard lesson. Please don't make him pay enternally for it. If you want to blame anyone blame me for I lured him into the sweet trade. Glad to see you back on the board again Zorg. I'll give you a call this weekend and let you know how the Toshiba Tall Ship Festival went.

I know that some members of PRP were shooting off blackpowder pistols and at least one rifle. Capt. Ned Slaye was on the Spirit of Dana Point shooting her rifle off (yes she. Capt Ned is a woman). I think Louis Sanagrin [sp?] (Aka Louis Lambe) and Juan de la Kaboom (aka Jack Rose) were on the Argus firing away. BTW Jack is a licened pyrotechnician. Tell me about the boats! There was a guy on Saturday on a jet ski with an infant who couldn't have been more than 6 months old sitting in his lap! And he was more than a mile off the coast mind you! Also on Saturday the Argus had to run aground or otherwise he would have rammed a pleasure boat that would not get out of the way. I mean there were some real idiots out there! Luckily the captain (Erik (aka Red Tar) a member of PRP) waas able to get it off the sand bar in 10 minutes.
