  1. St. Augustine is getting our own pirate ship, a version of the Black Pearl. She is being built by a local hotel owner and will be located at the city yacht pier for a while them moved to the Fountain of Youth as her final home.

Don't know her arrival date but I know she will be here for the Florida Heritage Book Festival September 14th & 15th.

I'll post more as I find out the details.

    Keep to the Code!

  2. The Black Pearl is a barge, not a ship. Only one side of the barge is made to look like the Black Pearl.

The Flying Dutchman is also a barge, but is fully demensional from all sides. The last I heard it was still at Castaway Cay. It's been a big draw for the Disney Cruise Line. I was hoping to see it in person this May, but alas that is not to be.

The Lady Washington, also known as the Interceptor, is a true tallship and is currently sailing the west coast with this year's ASTA schedule. The Royaliste participated in this on the east coast last year.

Rather than pining after the barges, you should go out on a true Tallship. This is much more stimulating than the barges are. Next time Royaliste is in your area, you should make a trip to sail on it. With their black powder guns and tight deck, you will see, taste, smell, touch and hear the life of a pirate. Once you experience that, you won't miss the barges.

One of the ships in POTC2, the Pearl, I think, is a real ship of sorts. She was built on the hull of one of those offshore oil rig supply boats......saw some photos of her construction, in a Mobile shipyard.

  3. I need to add that everyone here at Pirates Magazine is a huge fan of No Quarter Given and of Jamaica Rose. We treasure being able to working with her as much as we do and wish we worked with her more.

NQG will always be the best. They were the first and they will always be around.

We try our best to put out a piratical magazine that has a little bit for everyone. For those of you that were not impressed with the latest issue I ask you to hold your opinions until you rest your eyes on this next issue. This will be the first issue that I am officially involved with and I think this next issue will be the best by far. We are working hard to bring great historical content with a mix of what’s going on with today’s re-enactors and festivals.

Last issue was a catch up issue with the festivals we have done recently. Look for just a touch of that in the future. Having me onboard with the magazine ties in a lot of re-enactors that have networked with Kerry and I over the years.

    Cheers!

    p.s. PM sent Mr. Young.

You sell yourself short sir!.........You cover a wide range of topics for all types of pirate fans. Pirate Fandom is a wide varied world…..more than historical and reenactment events. There are those who live the true historical life, those what just like to play and them what wants to read anything piratical. You folks do a great job, providing an informative, easy to read, colorful publication and I, for one, am happy you do what you do.

Live Long and Plunder Well and keep the issues coming!

  4. Nevermind...I found some free fonts.

    Fell Types....late 1600's

FYI, the people who provide this page have also taken the pains to create realistic 'kerning' (a.k.a, the spacing between the letters, etc). What is characteristic about the Fell fonts here is the irregularity of dimension, position, and attitude of the letters, which make it look more authentic. I have some design experience but I am not a typeface expert.

You can use your font to create your signature then, using a program like adobe Photo Shop, create a signature block like you did with your banner....then you can upload it and it will appear in all your posts.

  5. There's a big difference between Disneyland and a maritime museum. Public interest in pirates is on the wane again. It's always been cyclical. Everyone looks upon that as a bad thing. I've been playing pirate for 25 years and have seen the comings and goings of pirate pop culture during that time. Do I care? No. Does it affect my piratical play and performance? No. Does it make me see fewer Jack Sparrow impersonators at pirate events? Yes and thank god! I'm looking forward to a return to normalcy, frankly.

By the way: Mel Fisher's Museum in KW got rid of their pirate exhibit two years ago. Guess they didn't know what they were doing either. No one even noticed.

I agree with you to a point, particularly the Sparrow guys, but I would think that a maritime Museum would want to educate all facets of the maritime world. At some times and in some places, Pirates made a great impact on the maritime community....give us some small corner with a display of our villainous heroes.

That trend makes my personal pirate collection that more dear to me.

  6. I posted this a few days ago and it disappeared.....I'm giving it another try.

This is not a cocked hat but shows some possible alternate techniques for forming hat blanks.

    hat01_500.jpg

My wife and I hand shaped this hat blank putting on the braid with a hot glue gun then glued the brim to the crown the same way. The hat is about four years old and still holds its shape through book signings and some pirate events.

  7. This is not a cocked hat but my wife & I made it from a hat blank. We hand shaped it and attached the gold trim with a hot glue gun and fastened the brim to the crown the same way.

    hat01_500.jpg

    hat02_500.jpg

It has lasted about 4 years so far....I used to ware it to book signings in my British Naval Uniform. it is the most comfortable hat I have.

  8. The netting is a nice touch..perhaps some manillia Rope?

The rope would look great....I used to go down to the shrimp boat docks and get their discarded rope but most everything in the river now has turned to pleasure craft that uses nylon rope.....I'll look around some.

  9. I added a little more decor...it look a little sparce.

    mirrow_mod1_400.jpg

Notice my pirate shower curtain reflected in the mirror.....lol

    mirrow_mod2_400.jpg

In this shot you can see the reflection of some of our pirate events

And OE I would love to go to Pirate Con but don't think I can do it this year....I am real busy right now researching information for a small book on Pirates in St. Augustine and have recently canceled my Nathan Beauchamp Series with my publisher and reediting them so I can place them with another publisher...busy, busy...lol I WOULD LOVE TO MEET ANOTHER PIRATE WITH SUCH A GREAT DEDICATION TO PIRATE DECOR.

  10. I got the brother to your parrot, also a christmas gift.

Wonder how many others on the Forum got a mechanical talking parrot?

Now to figure out how to attach him to my shoulder.

You can take him off the perch and he will cling to your arm....might have to strap him on (like he is on the perch).......otherwise he'll keep falling off and folks might think he be taken with drink!

  11. That's really a cute idea and especially a good gift idea. I saw on a website for pirate themed items, Pirate Hot Sauce. I was thinking about making my own label on Powerpoint and replacing the Hot Sauce label in the fridge.....

I made labels for my wife's hot sauce on Power Point......A light coat of mod podge after the label is glued on will keep the ink on the label from running.

  12. I found these smaller ones at Hobby Lobby in the sand art section, they were $.69 each...they fit right in the hand just perfectly......they are plastic and have a slight seam mark on each side and have no neck after the threaded area....

I drilled a hole in the cork and inserted a white shoe lace and cut it to fit....then painted the outside flat black......never saw one, except in cartoons, so I am kinda guessing here.

    mini600.jpg

The parrot is a Christmas gift....it talks and even responds to questions and can be programed to record whatever you want him to say.

  13. Aha! I knew it!

I had a feeling if they had turned up in Florida that they would have found their way there via S. America or Mexico.

I learned in my old Marketing job, that much trade occurs in a small circle between Miami and the gulf region and South.

    Oh well..

Hey maybe Harbormaster has a connection. He's and his wife are in Mexico at times..

All tha lovely Gold ya know.. B)

You are right....the bottle cap is in Spanish and says it was bottled in Mexico........I found some clear Christmas balls at Hobby Lobby on their end of season shelves but they are completely round and kinda fragile ..I'm not sure they would stand being handled very much so I passed on them.

  14. Anybody?

Or are these cool bottles only available in Florida?

Maybe something Coca-cola did for overseas and they found their way there?

I only found them the one time at WalMart...they were in a barrel up front and gone the next time I went back....I wanted to get some more.

  15. I've come across some vinegar bottles in the grocery store that have longer necks but the same shape that I thought would be good. I didn't know how much of a headache it would be to grind down the threaded area. There is even an expensive vinegar bottle that's kinda a flattened onion bottle shape.

What did you use to grind it down?

    Thanks,

    Pogue

These are plastic...I cut off the threaded area with a hacksaw then sanded the cut area.

Most hobby stores carry a cheap glass bottle cutter which would be great to remove the threaded area of the neck.....if you did not want to reduce the length of the neck a dreamel rotory tool comes with a point that would grind the threads off the glass.

Good luck...post some photos if you get it like you want.

    Joe

  16. I have been looking for an old style onion bottle for some time. I have seen a few similiar bottles but none quite just right.....then I saw these unique 13.5 oz. Coke bottles that looked like Christmas tree balls...thought they were neat then thought "they look like onions"...Then I began to play around with some ideas.

    onion1.jpg

They might even make good replica hand bombs......a little black paint and a fuse...who knows....might look like one.

here it is on my shelf.

    onion2.jpg

Have a Great Holiday....Hope you get all the plunder you desire.

  18. This little project took about 2 hours and filled a small wall just right.

I got this flat white mirror from the neighbors trash the day after their yard sale...it still had a $10 price tag on it.....I painted it gold and mounted it on the wall then placed a nautical shelf that I bought at the flee market for $15.......after hanging the mirror and the shelf they still look like they were missing something so I hung my mugs to the larboard and starboard...think it came out nice and filled the alcove just right.

  19. Not to be nit-picky (why am I saying that, when, of course, I'm going to be nit-picky?)but a sword has a scabbard, a knife a sheathe. I really just wrote this so I could get to the next level in the Pub.

Technically you are correct.....see why we need knowledegable instructors...and editors...lol

    Thanks for pointing that out.

    Joe

  20. Now, I appreciate this is a bit of fun, but since this IS Twill I have to ask:

What's your evidence for the answer to exam Q. 25?

(I know, I know, I'm a boring spoilsport twit, but it's something I've heard many times before without ever having seen any evidence. Since I'm keen to get to the bottom of it who better to ask than Pirate U.?)

No hard evidence only a passage in John Reeve Carpenter's book "Pirates, Scourge of the Seas" 2006 Gusto Company, Barnes & Noble, Inc Publishing. page 62. "Walking the plank has become synonymous with pirate punishment of captives, but in fact it was very rare, and the only pirate who made his victims walk the plank was Major Stede Bonnet. "
