  1. Many thanks! And I agree about the digital cameras... a few of the Brethren's pics were taken with them, but the camera I have now is amazing compared to the digitals from back then. At HP 1 in the mock trial I was one of the rabble rousers in the crowd. At the first Hampton Blackbeard Festival I took the stand to give testimony against Blackbeard's crew. Eric! Ha! In his fancy attire! Somewhere around here I've got pics of him in his "new" duds... I'm not certain, but that may be the "Mr. Cotton" outfit from PotC that he won on ebay. If so, too bad it didn't come with the parrot. Blackjohn
  2. You really do need a copy of Wits, Wenchers and Wantons... and 1700... oh! I just checked Amazon, they've got a special! 1700 and Dr. Johnson together for $42. Blackjohn
  3. I couldn't agree with you more!!! You have pics!!! Let ME see!!! Yes, HP 1 was in 2000. There was going to be an HP 3 in 2002 but something unravelled. I'll ask around and let you know if anyone seems interested. Blackjohn
  4. Aye, that there was... and not one, but two. Sadly, the second was on the weekend of 9/9 and 9/10. The weekend before 9/11. Talk about coming off of a high the hard way. Check out the pics on my site: http://www.piratebrethren.com/gallery Blackjohn
  5. I've met Ken Kinkor, pirate historian for the Whydah, more than once... and Barry Clifford too. Go to Whydah.com and send Ken an email. He may reply. Blackjohn
  6. I understand that feeling completely! There's something dynamic about a coming storm. I've seen my share of flooding and hurricane related damage, but there's still something about them that I find, as you said, energizing! However, as I said, I've seen my share of hurriane damage (I missed MD Renfest last year because of Isabel) so I hope these two do little to no harm. Blackjohn
  7. Why does John Wayne Bobbit keeping coming to mind... But I digress! And now, I must find something scholarly to say... Hmmm, nope, nothin'. Blackjohn
  8. If you've never taken Latin, I highly recommend it. Oddly enough, in reading this bio of Dampier, at one point he uses the Latin he learned as a youth. Being alone and far away in the South Sea, it just so happened that he met with a priest. And the priest knew Latin. It was the only language both had in common. Pretty cool stuff. Blackjohn
  9. Ahoy Alesmith!!! Thanks, you make beer, you are my hero! While I haven't heard of Doctor Johnson's &c, I do HAVE a copy of "1700: Scenes from London Life" by Maureen Waller. It's sitting on the shelf directly behind me!!! Blackjohn ps - btw, I got it for a steal! Daedalus books' warehouse store is just a few blocks away, I picked it up for somewhere in the neighborhood of $7!
  10. Or here... http://www.re-enact.com/TRow.htm Blackjohn
  11. Ahoy! Try digging through this, you may find something: http://www.the-reenactor.co.uk/ Blackjohn
  12. Who would've guessed? C'mon, doesn't suprise me at all. In fact, I'd be suprised if it didn't exist. For an interesting look at the historical "dark" side of things, find a copy of Wits, Wenchers and Wantons: London's Low Life: Covent Garden in the Eighteenth Century, by E.G. Burford. Blackjohn
  13. Chalk it up to the quirkiness of languages... Lets see... my memory is a bit hazy here so bear with me... in Spanish it was Colon? And in Italian it was Colombo? If so, I can easily picture the Colombo being translated into Latin as Colombus/Columbus. And then there's the whole issue of illiteracy and non-standardization of spelling... Blackjohn
  14. Agreed! And if you love Howard Pyle, you would've loved the Howard Pyle Festival. I should really try to resurrect that event. Blackjohn
  15. The Pirate's Son... ok, you got me on that one. Now I suspect I could easily find info on the net, but please, tell me more. Blackjohn
  16. Last Friday I found a new book on pirates, by none other than my favorite pirate historian, Marcus Rediker. The title is: Villains of All Nations, Atlantic Pirates in the Golden Age. I love Rediker's previous works, and while flipping through this book I can see I'll love it too. I know what I'm reading once I finish the Dampier biography!
  17. Linen is great for everything. You can't go wrong with it. Well... you could, I've had some fine linen shirts disintegrate on me with a year of heavy wear. But that's what I get for wearing a fine linen shirt into battle! Of course, now it makes a really good pirate shirt if I want to look like I've been marooned. Blackjohn ps - wool is good too! Nothing beats wool for giving you that extra needed warmth in the summer!
  18. Oh, and I WILL ask Marko about Bob's singing. And... MR and Mrs BALLS will be joining us on the 23rd! Btw, more and more people are sending in money for tickets. Hopefully we'll have this ship packed with pirates of the worse kind before long. Blackjohn
  19. Avast! I didn't know that! Your Bob (I'm using the Blackadder pronunciation) is one helluva fellow! We need musicians. If he's interested, we'll double his beer rations!!! Blackjohn
  20. For those unfamiliar with Waugh's book here are some scans on my friend Kass' page. http://www.reconstructinghistory.com/17thc...frockcoats.html OH! Under the Crews section of this forum you'll find a link to a coat pattern I scanned today. One set of links is to tif files, best to ignore those and go down through the messages until you get to the one that points to the gif files. Blackjohn
  21. Coats... aye, those we tifs... these be gifs... Coat Details Coat Pattern Blackjohn
  22. Righto! I'll be the quiet one, dressed as a pirate. Blackjohn
  23. The captain has been thinking of a new coat, and he's been doing some research... Coat Details Coat Pattern Blackjohn
  24. Another difference between modern pirates and those of old... I've never heard of modern pirates trying to entice (or force) their victims to join with them in their piratical undertakings. Usually the reports say something like, "pirates armed with knives and AK-47s stole cash from the purser's safe." There's no talk of grand fraternal brotherhoods, no inquiries as to the captain's treatment of his crew, et cetera. Blackjohn
