  1. We had quite a long discussion about striped stockings on my pirate mail list. The verdict was, as I recall - no, they are not accurate. There's not really much evidence to support their use/existence during the "Golden Age of Piracy." Also, fwiw, the mass produced re-enactor stockings available today are constructed differently than those of the 300 years ago. I'd tell you more, but I'm just a simple pirate... with a friend who is really keen on period stockings.
  2. Wow, truly a thing of beauty. For those interested, and in that particular neck of the woods, Evil Stevie is running the Pirate Game this Saturday at a con in Austin. http://www.sjgames.com/ill/
  3. Welcome aboard! You may want to hop on over to the "Initiation Rites and Pub Management" forum with this message, where you'll get tons of responses from the happy patrons of the Pub. Best Wishes, Blackjohn
  4. Here's some recent news on the QAR.
  5. I recall reading somewhere that the last time a cutlass was used in action by a member of the USN was during the Korean War when a group of Seabees were over-run... Moving back to the topic at hand... definately take that edge off!!!
  6. I usually buy them at events, that way I can get a look at what is available. But, as GoF suggests, you can go online and do a search for felt hat blanks. I generally don't like these guys, but it's kinda hard to screw up a blank... http://jas-townsend.com/product_info.php?c...products_id=249
  7. Thread drift... it happens all the time as you well know. As for that French ship, well, hopefully they are spending all their money on building the ship and have allotted no money to their website. Of course, I'm amazed that these things still do get built. The Sultana, for instance... I can remember when she was just an idea on a t-shirt! Blackjohn
  8. Thanks Stynky. Glad you liked it. Unfortunately, that particular coat has no pockets, so I didn't take any pics of anyone. Blackjohn
  9. Make your own. Buy a felt hat blank, cock it yourself, and trim it with whatever makes you happy. Stick a feather in it and call yourself macaroni if you so desire. Or, I'll do it for you, and only charge you $100. Blackjohn
  10. I've never tried it, but supposedly burning silk smells like burning hair and burning cotton smells like burning plant fiber.
  11. I'm a big fan of this French ship. My eye has been on this one for awhile. Not built yet, but it looks like they are actually working on it.
  12. No. It makes you closer in age to the majority of "Golden Age" pirates than many of us here. :)
  13. Many's the night I dreamt of cheese, toasted, this here frigate to carry me from Treasure Island. :) That's a fine ship, and very good for the period we are interested in. And you can find her, and many others appropriate and not so appropriate here.
  14. I'm with ya on this one Hawkins. Finding a decent cutlass isn't easy. Even this particular sword, while nice, is really closer to a much later (1770s I believe) style.
  15. 16 and 36-24-36? Those are the undercover FBI agents working on sting operations. Just speaking for myself, age is no big issue. It's content that I'm seeking. So for me, here's the lay of it. There are places here for off-topic chatter. Lets keep it in those places.
  16. I suppose some will argue that the "rank" is a fun part of the site, but in my opinion, if "rank" fell overboard in the middle of a moonless night, I'd be happy. The way it is handled right now, I believe it contributes to the problem. :) But hey... I'm just another dude with a keyboard and an opinion.
  17. Two cool articles on the skeletal remains of a sailor found in the wreckage of Cromwell's ship Swan. http://www.reuters.co.uk/newsPackageArticl...ws&section=news http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/3651682.stm
  18. My pleasure. Best of luck with your novel.
  19. Haha... I'm not sure I can tell any difference. I've always thought the signal-to-noise ratio here was outrageous!!! :)
  20. Don't know if this is what you are looking for, but you might want to read through this online article The Colonial Currency, Prices, and Exchange Rates. Or there is How Much is that Worth Today?
  21. Stupid?!?! Heck no!!! That's a fantastic look! And in this pirate's book its one of the few things that can give the Gibson Girl look a run for its money.
  22. Agreed. I think. I guess it depends on your definition of THE Man. Do you mean The Man, or Da Man?
  23. Right... And if you want to play a wargame with them, you may eventually want to play a wargame with these pirates.
  24. I wish I could give you an answer, but I don't know enough about women's clothing and all my books 20 miles away... I betcha Kass would know!!! Kass, where are you???
  25. Haha! If that is the most recent edition (with the Don Maitz cover) then you'll find my name on the title page under the playtest credits. And also, somewhere nere the very end, you'll find our group's old url listed! (mental note, send errata to SJGames) Blackjohn
