  1. I'm certainly not a copyright lawyer, but I have heard strange tales... tales that make we wonder just how far such things can be pursued, if the owner was so inclined. Blackjohn
  2. I hate to see people get ripped off... but... to me, and this is just an observation, opinion, etc., this topic seems ironic, considering this is a pirate forum, and even moreso, when one takes into account the number of pics from PotC found in sigs and as avatar images here. YMMV Blackjohn
  3. According to my sources, on the Whydah were found 35 silver buttons. Unfortunately, I don't have specs on them, nor do I know if they were all one type, or a mix. Fwiw, they also found 14 brass cuff links, 4 brass clothes hooks, and 73 silver buckles. I believe those buckles were of the knee breeches variety. I could perform the rituals to call forth one of the great Old Ones from his ancient slumber. I might lose my last vestiages of sanity, but we might learn a thing or two. Blackjohn
  4. Pardon me for the intrusion, but my guess would be that our Gentleman here would like to play the part of a crew member on a successful pirate excursion. If Captain Johnson's book is accurate, and I have no cause to believe it isn't, one of those things often plundered was nice clothing. As for the issues of command... isn't everyone being an "officer," or maybe I should say equals, what piracy is all about (well, after the plundering, pillaging, etc.). Blackjohn
  5. Thanks, but it wasn't a guess. Hmmm... What's that old adage? You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar. My point being, I'm glad you are here, and interested in history of the period, but I don't know believe your methods are going to gain any converts. Lets face it, there are some people who don't want to be educated. I'm cool with that. They can do their thing, I'll do mine. It doesn't make either group of us bad people. On my group's pirate mail list we have these discussions now and again - authenticity, why we do this, etc. I've come to the conclusion that I am not doing what I do to educate the public. I'm doing it to educate me, and those seeking similar bits of knowledge. So, stick around, lets talk history. But lets not call people names or play holier-than-thou, because when you get down to it, we are all just playing dress-up, right? :) Blackjohn
  6. I think you are right about that date. As far as I'm aware, the war is the dividing line for fashion at this point. To my eye, there are noticeable differences before and after. Blackjohn
  7. Hoho... thanks. Odd as this may sound, that's the second time this day someone said that, in relation to my piratin' activities. I guess I must be doing something right?!?! There must be other artists from the period. Let me check my notes. Blackjohn
  8. I'm going to have to think about this one... I must have something around here somewhere that can answer that question... I'll check later, as right now I'm gathering my kit together for the Brethren's First Annual Sword Fight and Photo Shoot. Wish you could be here! Maybe next year... Blackjohn
  9. Try not to label us. We are people too. :) I'd suspect most of them, more often than not, tried passing as men. Blackjohn
  10. That's a d--n fine question. Lets face it, at best he's a decade too late. Which is a shame because my alma mater's library has practically everything he's done. There are a few earlier artists who I'd consult first... Watteau... Laroon... I believe they are both from the opening decades of the 18thC. Of course I really do love Hogarth, esp the one of the sailors in the rowboat. Blackjohn
  11. GoF, how does "Track" catalogue compare to the Rifle Shoppe's catalogue? http://www.therifleshoppe.com/ Our good brother Bloody Davy had one of those, and it was well worth the money, but I've never seen one from TotW. Blackjohn
  12. Wow Kass, that's quite amazing... Don't let the alesmith drink any red wine while he's wearing it. Blackjohn
  13. I'm curious, do you have a pair of these? I'm wondering just how "sloppy" they are. In the pic they don't look very full. But it might just be a bad pic. Blackjohn
  14. At least Ice Pirates had the dreaded space herpies... Pirates of the Plain gets my vote. Blackjohn
  15. Hehe... swap out Newton for Heston and Redd's got the right line-up!!! Yellowbeard... yet another pirate movie that needs to be on dvd. Blackjohn
  16. Ok... lets see... I sent this to a friend the other day, don't quite remember where it came from... "Historical Maritime Costume Design, Thomas Tucker, 1610 Bradford Ct. Rock Hill, South Carolina 29732 Phone 803-985-7876 or e-mail manowar1688@aol.com Seaman's trousers, petticoat breeches, shirts, seaman's jackets, waistcoats, great coats, regimental coats, etc. Designed and constructed by a historical maritime, naval & military consultant for documentary, feature film, historic sites, tall ships & museums" There's also www.noquartergiven.com. That's dot com, mind you. He says he's going to make slops, maybe he has started and his site is out of date... Also, a guy I know named Tom Apple used to make stuff. Kick ass stuff! I'm not sure if he's still in the biz of making stuff or not. You can do a search on either Tom Apple or Trading Party or both. Godwin probably had them at one point, don't know if he still does. http://www.gggodwin.com/ Ha! Towsend has them. They are fall front, i.e., later period slops. http://www.jastown.com/mens18/dt-107.htm Hope this helps. Blackjohn
  17. As far as I know no one makes a duckfoot flintlock repro. Blackjohn
  18. Ahhh... good pics! Ye gods that was a great event!!! Thanks for posting them! Ok, how's this for odd... I was just handed a copy of [/u]The Pirate's Son. So now I don't have to find copy. Blackjohn
  19. Agreed!!! Chuck Heston rules as Long John Silver!!! I say we get a petition going and make those b-----ds release it on DVD!!! Are ye with me!!!???!!! As for Swashbuckler... I recorded it on my hard drive and plan to watch it this weekend. And hey, as MadMike pointed Geoffrey Holder is in it, so it can't be bad! Hahahahaha... Blackjohn
  20. Or paint the whole thing black. Sea service weapons were frequently painted to keep them from rusting. Though I suspect pirates probably didn't bother with that, and just spent plenty of time keeping their weapons clean and in good repair. Blackjohn
  21. Yes, you should. I've finally finished the Dampier bio and started reading this one yesterday. Thus far (just finished chapter 2) I'll say it is one of the best pirate history books I've ever read. Blackjohn
  22. Somewhere in here, but I can't find it to save my soul, someone asked a question about hurricanes, and what sort of early records we have, etc. It just so happens that I have a copy of Hurricanes of the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions, 1492 - 1800. Here's a snippet from the section on the origins of the word itself... "The Spaniards who accompanied Columbus on his four voyages to America took back to the Old World with them a new concept of what a severe storm could be and, naturally, a new word of Indian origin. It seems the Indian word was pronounced furacán during the early years of the discovery and colonization of America." Interestingly enough, it appears Columbus didn't encounter any on his first voyage. On the second voyage however, the author states "in June of that year, 1494, [the town of] Isabella was struck by a hurricane, the first time that white men had seen such a terrible storm." Blackjohn
  23. There's also Evil Stevie's Pirate Game, from my favorite game-maker! http://www.io.com/~sj/PirateGame.html Blackjohn
  24. Girls slumber party... hmmm... oops! forgive the intrusion ladies... the instrument of which you speak is the concertina, invented about 1830. Might I suggest a hurdy-gurdy instead. And no, that's not the thing that the guy with the monkey is playing. Again, my apologies for the intrusion, you can all go back to slumbering now. Blackjohn
