What a wonderful place for an event! It looks absolutely beautiful!
I made a point of photographing it for anyone wishing to see the fort from many angles. It's a wonderful setting in a rural part of the Mid West. Nothing but a paved road and countryside.
Quarter Master,
Have you recieved our Letter of Marque from the Gov. yet for this event?

Thanks H.....it appears that the web sites rules and regs for weapons is down.....i contacted Jeff J. and the Captain.......

Queen Anne Pistol
The Queen Anne Pistol is also known as the "turn-off" pistol due to the fact that the barrel unscrews from the chamber for loading. It takes the name "Queen Anne" from the era in which it first appeared in numbers. While any gun from the 1702-1714 period could technically be called a "Queen Anne", it is the turn-off pistol that has become synonymous with that name. The ability to have the barrel unscrew allowed for a tighter fitting bullet that would develop more power and greater accuracy in use. Most period pictures of Black Beard show him with lots of pistols that seem to be of the Queen Anne style (see above picture)
An excellent book on the subject is The Queen Anne Pistol 1660-1780, by John W. Burgoyne. Sadly, I don't have this book yet, but it should be in my collection.
In the begining of the Turn-off's development, the pistols were essentially the size and style of other pistols, they just had a barrel that unscrewed. The rest of the pistol remained the same with a traditional lock, which was separate from the breech. I can not confirm a date, but at some time in the "pre" or early GAoP, turn-off pistols transitioned to a combined breech and lock, that is, it was formed as one unit (if anyone can help with this transition date, please e-mail me). So the Archetype Queen Anne's that would best exemplify GAoP use would have the breech and lock as a single unit.
Pedersoli Queen Anne Kit
This is perhaps best described with some pictures. To the left we have the Pedersoli Queen Anne kit from Dixie Gun Works. As you can see, the lock is separate from the breech and barrel. (NOTE: This is a fairly easy kit to build, and could be done in a weekend. There are many sources for this kit, so check around for the best price)
This next Queen Anne kit is from E.J.Blackley & Son. You can see that the breech and lock are made together as one unit.
Queen Anne Turn-off Pistol from Blackley & Son
While this particular pistol is a copy of Queen Anne from around the 1740s, this breech/lock combination would be the dominant style used during the GAoP.
The kit pictured is more involved than the Pedersoli version. Kind of like the difference between a snap-tite model car and one from Tamiya.
The exchange rate absolutely sucks right now, so the Blackley kit will run you $560. Figure at least on another $300 to have someone put it together for you.
For the astute, you probably notice something else different with the Pedersoli kit. The pistol is not a "turn-off" at all. The kit is a muzzleloader without an unscrewing barrel. This makes it hard to figure out what Pedersoli is really copying. It has features of the early Queen Anne (large and has a separate lock), but the barrel is fixed yet there is no provision for ramrod. If anyone has a good idea of what it is, or knows which and from when the pistol is copied, please chime in and let me know.
Queen Anne "Night Pistol" (non turn-off)
To confuse the matter even more, there were Queen Anne style pistols that did not have unscrewing barrels. Some refer to these pistols as "night pistols" and the claim is that they were intended to be loaded with shot instead of a ball (thus not needing the turn-off barrel). These must be "the rarest" of the Queen Anne style pistols as even Burgoyne's book only has one or two pictures of them. The one pictured above even has a thimble attached for the ramrod.

Hope this helps
Thanks VS ....lots of good historical information........I am zeroing in on the Pedersoli Queen Anne pistol.........I have seen refs. that this style pistol goes back to 1660...i want to select a pistol that i will use at Searl's Raid in March.........dont want to be banned from participating..........Yo Ho

We're trying to estimate our needs for camp and location at Fort de Chartres the first weekend of June. If you're even considering your schedule for the year and have high hopes of attending alongside us there, please sound off and be counted. Now that we have our foot soundly in the door we hope to enlarge our presence and make ourselves available for living history, the public tug-o-war and other events during the 41st annual Rendezvous at Fort de Chartres. It's a beautiful setting representing the wilderness colonization of the period and it just happens to line up with the year we represent. 1720. If you don't belong to a crew, and even if you do, you are all welcome.

wow !! you guys wanna do the fort again ??
Brutality of the heat aside, they treated us like gold and were very welcoming. The fort is beautiful and the land rustic and well tilled in equal portions, so you could hardly ask for a better backdrop. Besides, I have many friends there that I can't wait to see again. Also, we have our foot firmly planted in the door and I mean to do more at this year's event.
Ahoy ! Searles (defnately) Put-in Bay ( most probably), FDC (definately), MB, Ineed to coordinate with you Sir for Searles, also will call D.D. with FDC after the first of the year...........

Quarter Master William,
Saw Jim Keele this weekend at FDC and we realized that Mr. Keele is not on our Muster. Please add Pirate Jim Keele (AKA Dead Jim Keele as we called him at FDC in June) and His Mate Rhonda to the Muster......also he would love to have a decale to show our colours.

In the interest of finding and meeting with fellow crew members around the globe, I offer this Muster thread. So where is the Mercury located? I am a bit fuzzy.....(no hygiene references please!) I am near St. Louis and am looking to have a bit more fun "privateering" as opposed to the staged re-enactment stuff I have been doing....Thanks!
Wes
Well, that's almost a philosophical question. It would be more accurately stated that the Mercury isn't located. I own the excellent drawings of the Mercury (as created by William Brand aka Red Wake), but that's about as much of it as there it outside of imagination.
As far as group location goes, we tend to be spread out all over the US. Many of us are from the midwest, but there are some on the East and West coasts and points in-between as well. The crew (AFAIK) was really begun at Pirates in Paradise 2007 in Key West by William. If I had to write a description of the aim of this crew (and this is just me, not official or anything), I'd say it is to help people develop their period accurate character persona, clothing, camping and so forth in a friendly, non-imposing way, while also having a good time together at period events.
All the members are quite free and open with their information and idea exchange from my experience. This crew is nothing like formal as far as participation goes; you can choose what events and sorts of re-enactment opportunities at those events you wish to participate in. Although I've noticed that the staged mini-things are often kind ///////of fun to do; things like battles and sketch scenarios help make for a more interesting event.
I'd say where two or three Mercury crew members are gathered at an event, there the Mercury be.
More to point with regard to you question, Mercury crew member Silas Thatcher is based out of St. Louis. You might get in touch with him to find out which events he attends to get an idea what is going on near you.
Mission
I feel that if one of our crew is at an event.....the Mercury be.......because the one does and can carry the spirit of the Mercury......Yo Ho

So I was wondering if you added th HP sauce to it??????????????????
Going back a few weeks ago, I caught the "Good Eats" episode on Paella. I've always wanted to try it, and the funny thing is, I think I first heard about it on an episode of "Seinfeld" (a show I rarely ever watched).
So last weekend, while on a random shopping excursion looking for drapes (well Kate was looking for drapes, I was tagging along ), I was wandering around the kitchen wares aisle of the discount store (you know that one where they sell off the brand name stuff for cheap because they got all the goods from an overstocked factory or a business going under). Anyways, I saw a paella pan on the shelf an looked at it, and I was blown away by the fact that it was only $7! So I bought it, and then went out the next day to buy all the ingredients I needed to cook up a batch.
Let me tell you, I was very happy about my $7 purchase. So I did some more reading, and have found there are a lot of variants on paella. I've found vegetarian versions, seafood versions, mixed almost jambalaya versions... I don't think I have been so excited about a food preparation style since I tried risotto some years back. But Paella is soooo much better than risotto!
So, I was wondering if there are any others out there who have had the obsession in the past, or still do, and what recipes you have tried or particularly like?
Edit -> I looked into the history of the dish a little, and while the modern version seems to have come about in the early 20th century, the concept is traceable back to at least the early to mid 19th century. It might go back further than that, but in my quick first glance at the easy sources, it looks like it doesn't go back too much further than that. If anyone has more information about the history of the dish, I'd love to hear about that as well!
