  1. This one has survived two events without any breakage
  2. The idea of making something like this without using the internal space to hide modern contraband... kinda, sorta puts me in a state of disorder. Maybe its just the smuggler in me...
  3. I made a canvas snapsack for my first pyrate event (PIP) back in 2009 and its still going strong. Its not the most convenient bag, everything drifts to the bottom and hard to find anything without dumping it out. I'm gonna try using my leather possibles bag (with compartments) for a while and see which I like better. Then maybe I'll make a leather snapsack or a linen haversack/possibles bag. I do have a market wallet Stynky gave me, I just like the security of the strap on the others.
  4. I've got one of these coolers in the utility room, but too many projects right now. Let's see what you come up with. The rope hinges are a great idea!
  5. If you wrap and glue the canvas directly to the styrofoam and then just cut around the opening, it would still be usable. The shape already works without the foam padding, it just wouldnt be cushy without the foam. Maybe leave an inch of overhang on the top piece to cover the split (opening). Not sure about the ropes unless it was tied on the bottom
  6. were you planning on leaving an opening so they can be used as coolers? asks the cook sheepishly...

  10. While I was searching for period bottles ran across a couple site that identified by year (somewhat) and ran across this... Mudlarking the Thames... https://londonmymind.com/mudlarking-in-london/
  11. Here's the first one. It's 30 inches tall which is a bit tall for the stools. I may leave the height on this one and cut the legs slightly shortly on the second one. It's basically a taller stool with a table top attached with wooden pegs.
  12. Yup. Sometimes its just trial and error til the lightbulb goes off. Figure out a couple steps, try it on, rework, try the next steps... Best of luck! That's my experience with drop front breeches. I finally got one pair done for myself and swore I would never do another. Since then I've had more than a few requests to make them, but since I rarely do Rev War anymore I'm sooooo not gonna worry about it. The problem is, once you have one done thats sometimes all you needed. Lots of work for 1 item, so I feel for ye.

  15. I drilled the legs at 5 degrees this time, but I'm not sure how this will work with longer legs and a wider top, might be top heavy. Also trying poplar legs this time around since oak is $12 a dowel and the poplar dowls are half the price and are a foot longer. Again this is an experiment, at worst we go back to oak legs I'm sure 5 degs will be fine for the stools. I think I did 7 degrees the 1st time around

    Shrub!

I've tried this two ways: one with just ice water (2 parts ice water, 1 part shrub) - Refreshing drink in the Arizona heat! I made Whiskey Sours with my normal dry mix and added a jigger of shrub (again 2 parts of mix with 1 part shrub) - Added a new twist to the flavor! "Shrub" is just a funny name!

  18. probably should move this topic to Shipwright forum or similar (since this is no longer Ft Gaines, but more generic efforts) ... Here's the makings of another stool and two small cricket tables (based on the stool design with threaded legs). The holes are all threaded. I went to buy dowels for the legs today but lowes and homedepot were completely out of the size dowels I needed. The legs on the tables are going to be longer than the legs of the stools. The table tops will be attached to what would be the seat with wooden pegs...
  19. yup - I watched a few youtube videos and was enlightened.

    Shrub!

I just made some lemon Shrub. Was going to add to my whiskey Sours but havent been drinking much of late. I've made it with strawberries and it was very tasty, but it gave me hives once, not sure why just the once. haven't tried again, but was going to try it with cherries. could be a nice addition to the Apple Pie! This is refreshing, when you mix it roughly 1 part shrub and 2 parts sparkling water. You can put it in cocktails or whatever requires some zest. How to Make a Shrub Drink You only need three simple ingredients to make a shrub recipe: Fresh produce: you can use fruit (berries, citrus fruits, and stone fruits work best), vegetables (try beets, pumpkin, celery, or fennel), or herbs Sugar: granulated, brown, or a mix Vinegar: apple cider, white wine, red wine, and balsamic are all great options Here's a step-by-step guide to making a shrub: Prepare the produce: Wash it and chop it into small pieces. Add sugar: In a bowl, mix the fruit with an equal amount of sugar. Let it macerate for several hours or overnight, allowing the sugar to draw out the fruit's juices. Strain the mixture: After the maceration process, strain the fruit and discard; collect the syrup. Add vinegar: Mix the syrup with an equal amount of vinegar, stirring until well combined.
