untilHistoric Fort Wayne, Inc. will host a Post Miami Event August 24-25. The French were the first Europeans to settle in the Great Lakes region. They arrived in northeast Indiana in the late 1600s. The confluence of the three rivers helped facilitate a lucrative fur trade with the Native American tribes. To protect their new venture, the French completed construction of Fort Miami in 1722, the first of two French forts built in the area. This weekend at the Old Fort, the French and British forces will reenact the clash for control of the area. Fur traders, Native Americans, soldiers, and civilians will demonstrate daily activities. There will be musket and cannon demonstrations. Artisans will demonstrate their craft. Merchants will sell their wares. The event runs Saturday August 24, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm and Sunday August 25, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. The event is free. First time participants must submit photos of themselves, members, and camp. First time vendors and blanket traders must attach photos of the camp and time-period appropriate merchandise. Registration deadline is August 9, 2024. Check-in begins Friday at 10:00 am. Saturday check-in is 6:00 am to 8:00 am. Vehicles must leave the grounds by 8:00 am Saturday. Parking is available in the lot across the street. Camp areas are assigned. Restrooms and a source of water are available. There are no food vendors on site. https://reenactingschedule.org/event/post-miami/

untilCome join us at the new Historic Fall Trade Fair at Fort Piqua, October 19-20, 2024. The Trade Fair spans the early years of Ohio’s history from 1742-1862, focusing on the life in and around the Historic Johnston Farm and Indian Agency. Come and see how Ohio influenced the history of the United States through the various demonstrators, vendors, and living historians that will be on site. Come see a bodger at work, and how his work affects the cook in the kitchen. Get tied up in loom work both the small looms that held everything together to the larger looms that covered the floor. Follow the smells to the kitchens of the house and visit the resident cook as she uncovers the mysteries of past recipes. Feel the concussion of cannons as they fire multiple rounds during the weekend. Oxen will be working not just in the fields but doing chores around the farm. There will be kid’s games and activities at the house just like the Johnston’s would have done to keep their kids busy when chores were done. Hold onto your wallets and protect your pockets if you dare to enter the world of Cutthroat Cheats and Thieves! They will be happy to introduce you to the Notorious Professions of the 18th Century. Who knows, maybe they will purchase, I mean, “hire” your children from you to teach them some job skills. There will be talks about women and their role in the 18th century. Longhunters will be returning from their forays west. A Victorian farming family will be coming to sell their fall harvest. The soap makers will be making their last batches of soap for the year. Our Colonial balladeer will sing you the songs of yesteryear. Hear the ring of blacksmith anvils as you see how blacksmithing changed over the decades. Find pieces of artwork to hang on your walls that forever capture a snapshot of years gone by. Take a leisurely ride down the canal on the General Harrison. Come and find a piece of history to take home with you from our historic vendors or to give to a loved one. This is the perfect place to find the memorable and unforgettable, for today and for the holidays. Please join us for a fun and educational event you will love! https://reenactingschedule.org/event/historic-fall-trade-fair-at-fort-piqua/

International Talk Like a Pirate Day is September 19th and what better way to celebrate than an arrrsome treasure hunt while taking libations at some of downtown St. Augustine's finest watering holes! WHAT: Find Captain Storm's treasure! Once again, scalawags abound and have made off with the Captain's loot. Rumor has it that in pirate fashion, these miscreants paid for their rum at each place using stolen gems! We only have a few clues as to the whereabouts, but if you can decipher the clue at each pub, it will lead you to the next one. Teams who correctly solve each clue and have collected all 5 pieces of loot are entered into a drawing for the grand prize basket of local plunder! The best part? This is not a race and is not timed! As long as you make it back to port by 4pm with all five pieces you are eligible to win! In addtion to the prize basket for those who complete the hunt, everyone will be entered into one of three door prizes! There also just might be additional random prizes for your team of pirates! If it isn't already obvious, this is a garbed event and your chance to dress up like a pirate for the day! Don't have the proper pirate apparel? Not ye worry, the home port of the hunt is The Pirate Store and Captain Skar has everything you need to look like a proper pirate! This is a charity event, and all proceeds go to our local St. Augustine charities! DETAILS When: Saturday, September 14th Check in begins at 11:30am, teams set sail at 12:30. Your team must be back by 4:00pm (again this is not timed, you can enjoy your afternoon!) I found another one of these birch/maple bowls again at goodwill for like $2.49. This one was painted and had a handle (similar to the first one below). If you see them new online they are about $30 a piece. Cherry and walnut versions are about double that. It had been sitting around a couple weeks so off to the shop (my garage) where I sawed off the handle and then took it to the abrasive wheel to remove the paint. After thoroughly removing the paint, it was hand sanded to smooth it and rubbed with olive oil to keep from drying out. These bowls seem to disappear regularly even though I've saved a few. Maybe cause I give em away? After an inventory I still have two (tho one is destined for one of my sons) and two large serving bowls. I've had at least 6 of the smaller ones over the years. Now I'm temporarily back to three... Over the years, I've just marked them with black sharpie on the bottom, so I can pull mine out of the dish pile. Now, in between making wood benches, its taken a step further... Wrote "mP" (madPete of course) on the bottoms in sharpie, then took a carving chisel and removed all the black. After that, I thinned some blue acrylic paint and dabbed it into the carving, when dry, it was hand sanded to remove the excess paint. now its obvious who it belongs to. The one on left is the new bowl just finished, the one on right is the bowl given to me by William Brand. Yup, I'm still using it and it got a new olive oil rub too!

Ahoy!

Not sure of the type event you gravitate to. Long Beach is 95% fantasy pirates. Dana Point is a tall ships event but with more historical pirate camps

Good Pirate events are rare in AZ. There's really very little pirate history on the west coast, nevermind AZ, so any pirate event seems to be replaced by hollywood inspired pirate myths and a party fest. From what I can tell the old pirate groups that were active here dont seem to be around either. I intended to visit that Hidden Lake event (either 2022 or 23), but something came up and I missed it. It sounded like a large event so not sure what happened. It seems Darksail was contracted for that event every year. I joined the their facebook group thinking it would be nice to participate in some local events but the group felt like drama due to the constant ask for money and long impoverished stories. Apparently the truck they used to transport their equipment to events was always breaking down. So I've had to satisfy my yearning for local events with the pirate weekend at the renfair. That and traveling to other events like Dana Point and Long Beach that are "semi-local" drives. An occasion Steampunk or Rev War event is usually in the mix as well. I do try to make a real travel (fly) event once every year and the Pub has been organizing/consorting to put up some worthwhile events. Massacre Island in Alabama and Ft King George in Georgia of late.

I started to make this for my middle son since he threatened to go to Dana Point with us and it fell thru. I went ahead and finished it since all I have is a snapsack and a leather possibles bag. Medium linen 10 inch X 11 inch. I added a lining on the flap and the strap is heavy linen stitched and turned inside out.

i have a good amount of white linen and thinking about dyeing some of it. Have you run across a formula for blue and white checks? LOL At the current time I'm undecided what color to dye it. My last shirt batch was just before Ft Gaines and I'm pretty set for shirts now. Maybe I should just make white rev war waistcoats... If it was another color I would make waistcoats, but white doesnt lend itself to much else unless you dye it.
-
PS... DID you maked baked beans also? LOL
-
I remember my mom using alum when pickling cucumbers. It supposedly keeps the pickle firm. But I also read something about alum being toxic in large amounts. Since those were black beans, I assume the dye is black or brown, or a dark gray? The color on my monitor looks like gray. Congrats on the efforts to make dye from a natural source! That is something I was researching because somewhere I read that there were no bright green natural dyes. There were natural green dyes, but not like we see today. They used the dyes for yellow and blue to get green. whether mixed dyes or separate dye steps, is unclear to me so far.

This topic reminds me of an old Brady Bunch episode. I think it was Peter that answered "What's for dinner?" with "Pork Chops and Appleshhhhauce" Anyways, I was looking for sausage recipes and happened across a couple sausage/pork and apple dishes. Seems like an odd combination, but maybe cause I didnt grow up around it. So I may have to experiment. https://lidiasitaly.com/recipes/sausages-and-apples/ and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcBuj8WvyK8
