    It's good to be 40!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY - and Nice kits! Man, my self imposed title of "The Diana Ross of Pyrates and Privateers" might just be in jeopardy! rolleyes.gif And no, I'm not a cross dresser! Not that there is anything wrong with that. Remember Diana Ross used to change outfits between every song she performed? So... Yer lookin good mate (in a manly way).

  2. Is Tori "Mad Sally" Baur, her husband "Ol' Chumbucket" John a member of this forum? THey were on Wife Swap, a goofy show where two families switch wives for 2 weeks. The pirate family was well, let me say uh, different. Really something to behold.

  3. Photo0085.jpgThought I'd post a picture of my jacobite garb which includes the tartan shortcoat I enquired about ealier. Here's what my character would look like at home in the highlands.

Photo0080.jpgPhoto0081.jpgand here is what he would look like once he joined up with the Yankee pirate crew.... The Iron Brigade.

    and there you have it

    Nice job!

  4. That is interesting news. I had a great time at my first trip last year. I did however notice that although ideal for the encampment participants, the Fort is not an ideal location from a marketing point of view. It's away from the masses of tourists and in my opinion would take a big effort and a lot of donated time and resources to get people from downtown Key West to the fort and back.

Perhaps this is a blessing in disguise. It always sucks being rejected, but generally things work out for the better. I foresee a new location that's more tourist friendly that will aid in bringing many more non-participants to the encampment festival.

Thanks Fayma, Spike, et al for all the hard work. It's appreciated.

  5. very cool painting. I just did a hunt around and found some more by the same guy. This one shows a ship in the process of careening:

That is excellent as well! So much to look at and take in. I see breeches with no stockings, a couple of interesting hats... Great stuff - but no butt sniffing dogs in this one. rolleyes.gif I read that the artist did a lot of individual rough portraits and then would combine them in his finished product.

  6. 1590-the-reception-of-cardinal-cesar-d-e-luca-carlevaris.jpgJust came across these paintings by Luca Carlevarijs. They are from a period between 1690-1720. Take a look, there are all sorts of folks in all sorts of clothing. Sailors in slops and short coats, petticoat breeches, landsmen with their stockings over their breeches, dogs sniffing butts, and even sailors without waistcoats or even - gasp shirts! Great stuff!

  7. I'm trying figure out, what specific details would have been in place for breeches around 1695-1700. I'm especially interested in pocket style, cut, how they would have been gathered at the knee, fly closure, etc. I have seen the baggier breeches with ribbon ties at the knees of earlier and the later? less billowy type with the button closure on the knees. Anyone have a pattern or a good reference? This is for my Francois Desportes (seen below) kit I'm having made. What would he have had on? To me, other than the thigh pocket, his breeches look like an early 1700s pattern. His leggings and waistcoat hide a lot of the detail. I could use some help!

  8. How forgiving are the measurements? I have to make a good set of stays before I can get my measurements with stays on, I have been looking for assistance with this as I have no craft with cloth at all, it could take a while. How long does it take to make, so I have an idea of a time frame to shoot for. I am going to order one, just have to have the particulars down.

Hey Anne. It takes 6-8 weeks for us to get one made. As far as the measurements, it certainly helps to have a stay on when you measure. It doesn't really need to be "the stay" you'll be wearing all of the time, just "a stay". I am meeting with our seamstress today to get all the measurements she'll need. I'll get back with you today or tomorrow. Thanks!

  9. Oooooo... I feel a purchase coming on. <_<

How about a front view as well??

Here you go! In this picture the front sides are worn down. It was more common to wear them pushed back to reveal more of the petticoat.

  10. I (Ivan Henry Trading Company) have been working with a local seamstress to carry a 100% Linen Hand Finished Mantua - it's taken me a while to coordinate everything, but now I think we finally have it ready to go! These are custom ordered so allow 6-8 weeks. While I know most of you all here in the pub sew yer own garments, I figure there might be a few who don't and would like a nice mantua.

    Check it out:

  11. I have heard good things about costume college... And I happen to like "stitch nazis" and wonder if I should refer to another controversial conversation on use of terms in a derogatory manner... I find that there are people who may come off high and mighty, but often this is explained by their passion for their craft.

I also wonder about your assumption that "those poeple cant (or dont) use reason or logic and know nothing about metaphysics and have no concept of how to proceed in the process of argumentation....."

I think this is a very rude statement, especially considering the required use of logic and reasoning in the recreation of historic costumes. I wonder further (well, only a little) about your ideas concerning metaphysics and your Belief that such lowly people as such concerned with achieving accuracy brilliant construction (stitch nazis) could not possibly possess the mental capacity required to understand any philosophy.

    Forgive my rudeness.

Agreed - Well put Lady Brower!
