  1. Ahoy,

    Thank You

    Tar

  2. This is awesome, I am very wood working illiterate (ask my dad, I'm sure I've taken a few years off his life trying to teach me his cabinet finishing techniques) I may try this on one of my pistols as well. Thank you.

  3. What sort of "guidelines" did yall have about attendance?

To be honest we started planning this soon after the last one so we had about four months to prepare. we started to let everyone know in mid august when things started to firm up. we required teachers to be well versed in what they were instructing. mind you most of this is simply basic stuff. to attend we really wanted only crew members. this was important because some of the teachers are somewhat uncomfortable speaking in front of crowds, at least initially. however they became more and more comfortable as time went on.

Our Boatswain Short Stack is the one who initially came up with the idea and did tons of research for a lot of us at the first one. This time around she really suprised alot of us by hosting an open discussion concerning the future of our group. She surprised us because she was able to do a remarkable job while working full time here in Rhode Island and traveling to upstate New York 4 or 5 days a week to work the Cayo Industrial Haunt from mid september till after halloween. she motivated the hell out of all of us.

Our Captain ran a couple of history sessions at both events covering all of the golden age of piracy and focusing on pirates native to RI. How the hell he keeps all that in his head I don't know. I just read something here and i forget how to use the door knob

if you plan on running one keep an eye on those you dont really think absorb any thing. They are the ones that really surprise you in the end with what they know.

again we leave it open to everyone on the crew, you find the ones that are serious about your groups future are the ones that show up, and you'll find its probably better that way. the ones that show up work their butts off big time. at some point i think we want to open it to outsiders even bring in other crews to teach and learn.

I know I dragged on here a bit but i hope it helped

    Cheers Tar

  4. I did remember Cranston but i didn't think anyone else would recognize his name. I'm just glad Capt. Atwood is finally on board here to share his knowledge. One of the best lessons learned came from Capt Atwood when he taught me it was a bad idea to wake him early on sunday morning

  5. And now we have kids arrested and charged for a food fight.

I keep hearing that all these zero tolerance policies are a reaction to school violence. Have non of the morons who promote them considered that the school violence may be a reaction to the draconian policies being instituted? Laws of physics- increase the pressure ehough without a safety valve and the vessel will explode. Push kids to learn more, faster than we ever had to, regulate their lives so that they have no time to just hang out and be kids, and then act surprised when things go boom. Yeah, that makes sense.....

    Here, Here!!!

  6. Pirate brokers looked at prominent people who endorsed piracy mostly for their own benefit like Governor Benjamin Fletcher of New York

Many of the classes you mentioned have run over the course of the 2 events some of the others were cut because we ran late on time

it was a great time and great boost to everyone's understanding of the era - im hoping one or two of my mates might post some thoughts here as well

  7. This past week our crew gathered for a pirate immersion weekend. This is an event that is open to our crew only. During the event members ran classes for other members on a host of subjects, including navigation, 18 century daily life of the various classes, Pirate brokers etc. It was a great event and a lot of fun for all of us. This was the second this year and we view them both as huge successes for a number of reasons. I have a couple of questions for those of you here on the Pub Have any of the other crews here on the pub participated in something like this in the past, or would like to in the future? Would this be something you might suggest to your own crews. Lastly what would some of you like to see in classes presented in your own crew’s immersion weekend? One of the reasons I ask is although I don’t post here often I read many threads and see many here are very knowledgeable in many areas concerning our time period. Most of you have much more experience in re-enacting than myself. I’m very interested in your opinions

  8. I've done some of this. We did use quills on period repro paper and sealed them with wax and our seals. We even went so far as to post them in a period way, passing them from person to person up and down the East Coast. The problem is that something like that does require a fairly decent number of people with more or less frequent contact. We used period language and syntax as much as possible. Our correspondance was between myself, as a 1595 soldier in Carlisle, writing to friends in London and on the Continent.

The experiment lasted about 15 months, until life just got in the way and things petered out. It was interesting while it lasted, and forced us to research not only the day to day facts of the time and place, but also how people from various stations in life would actually express themselves.

    Hawkyns.

With that in mind, where might i find a good reference for period language - myself and many of our crew are very interesting learning more

  9. To whom it may concern:

Afer an appropriate period of deliberation, I have come to the decision to tender my resignation from (Insert Company Name Here), effective two weeks from the date you receive this letter.

Please know that I still maintain a high level of respect for you as a manager and colleague, and I thank you sincerely for the support and assistance you have offered me in each of these roles. I have been proud to work for (Insert Company Name Here) over the past (Insert Years At Company Here); it has been a journey that has provided me an unparalleled foundation to move forward to new and exciting opportunities.

As such, I have decided to become a professional pirate. It has always been a dream of mine to live the life of a swashbuckling corsair, beholden to none and master of all I survey. once my crew of unabashed rogues is assembled, we shall take to the capacious expanse of the high seas to pursue fortune, fame, and hair-raising or loosing adventure.

Our path may not be filled with the porcine comforts or technological marvels that (Insert Company Name Here) provides, but we shall nonetheless move forward to carve a name for ourselves in the annals of bold insurgency and death-defying daring-do. Once I have a keen blade at my hip and the Jolly Roger is flapping high above me, I believe I will find my true calling. After all, when you are a professional pirate, you don't have to wear a suit.

Please note that I am currently accepting applications for First-Officer, if you are at all interested in applying. I will provide a full medical and dental plan, along with a full disability policy, which will offer immediate coverage of all maladies other then scurvy and the occasional bout of rickets.

    Sincerely,

    X

Man im saving this one for when im ready to leave my land lubbering position
