  1. So, I got a call from a friend last night telling me that while going to an art show opening in downtown Hollywood, he had suddenly been besieged by pirates! It seems that Camelot Days ( http://www.camelotdays.com/info.html ) has returned to TY Park.

I have never been to this particular ren fest, so I cannot vouch for it...but I may go and check it out anyway. Anyone else planning on going?

  2. I see your Mae West and raise you a few Talullah Bankheads!

"I'll come and make love to you at five o'clock. If I'm late, start without me. "

"I'm as pure as the driven slush."

"The only thing I regret about my past is the length of it. If I had to live my life again, I'd make the same mistakes, only sooner. "

"Cocaine isn't habit forming. I should know - I've been using it for years"

"I thought I told you to wait in the car?" (on seeing a former lover for the first time in years)

    "Codeine....bourbon....." (her reported last words)

  3. My favorite Hemingway quote - and the inspiration for one of my tattoos: "The world breaks everyone. Afterward, some are stronger at the broken places"

Ah, I just saw that quote recently the other day.

There's a similar one a friend told me, though I cannot find a source for it: Damaged people are dangerous, because they know how to survive.

  4. My dad went to vote this morning - got there when the poll opened at 7am and waited in line over an hour. My mom rolled out of bed after 9, went to the poll and walked right in - no one was there. She was back home in under 20 minutes.

See? IT PAYS TO SLEEP IN!

  5. Ya know, fer a lass claimin' t' have manners, ye have fergotten t' buy a round fer th' house, ye have. I'll have a rhum, Red, and welcome to our home port.

Clean oot yer ears, sir! I said I never claimed t'have manners. However, if getting ye in yer cups makes it easier to best ye in battle (or just lift ye purse), I'll surely supply some rum!

Scupper, the same back to ye!

Silkie, we'll like t'have t'be careful t'not scare off the payin' customers...there are those of a more.....delicate...nature, that like cannot handle such an assemblage!

M.A.d'Dogge, I thought *YOU* were one of the ones I was t'be watchin out for?

  6. So, I've had a hat black for a little over a year doing nothing but catching dust. I'm gonna try to cock it, but I have a few questions.

    1. It's got a 5" brim, currently. Hot much should I trim?

    2. When steaming, how do I shape it? Hat pins? File clips?

    3. How to I get the back edge to roll inward?

    4. Do I weatherproof after steaming? Before stitching?

  7. I just realized I never introduced me'self. 'Tis a good thing I never claimed t' have manners!

My name is Jessica, but ye can call me Red or RedJessi, as it matches both hair and general disposition. I'm new to the activity of piratin' but have long been fascinated by the stories (honestly, since I was a wee lass and learned the history of Florida- my native state - what with Ponce de Leon, Black Caesar, Sir John Hawkins and the like).

I am also finishing up my graduate degree - after a decade as a graphic designer, I finally went back to school. Come December, I will earn my masters in social work, as another interest of mine is social science and psychology. Other hobbies are reading, writing, painting, all things geekified, and sundry other things.

So, AVAST! I hope t'be meetin; a fair lot of ya at PiP this year, where I will be more than happy to celebrate as I will arrive on my last day of school!

  8. Most of the music I know predates the GAoF. I was trained in madrigals (around the mid 1500's) and then more recent chamber music (1800's), most of which were 4 to 9 part harmonies. That aside, though I am not a music scholar by any stretch of the imagination, I would think that whatever music was popular at the time would be just as likely to be sung on a ship, regardless of "shanty" status.

  9. Yar! The dreads aren't real, though they are likely as close as one can get without destroying their real hair. I made them several years ago with kanekalon loose hair, and I braid them in, similar to extensions. It takes a little over 4 hours to braid in 50 or so double ended dreads, leaving my with just over 100 dreads on me head. Here's a slighty closer look....

and my hair in it's more natural state:

  10. My very last class (finishing my master's degree!) ends at 4:30pm on Thursday. I will be leaving right from the campus (which is in Miami) and heading to Key West, so I should roll into camp in the early evening. Hopefully my GPS will direct me well. heh

  11. Hrm. Well, whatever the decision is, I will help out wherever needed as I can, with whomever needs it. Since this will be my first PiP and my first reenacting experience, I am going to be peppering everyone with questions daily, so it's the least I can do to pitch in with cooking, serving or cleaning.

Also, I will mention again that I am planning on driving into town Thursday and I have an FJ Cruiser with a big cargo area. I plan on having some coolers back there, but I am more than happy to bring them into camps if needed, and I will be more than happy to make store runs for ice/bread/whatever else is needed.

    Yar?
