Here's some things I've been working on. With my disability, I've been looking into an alternate means of employment, so I thought about selling some of my work, and perhaps taking on some new custom work. So far, I can make a plethora of things, ranging from monkey's fists to bellropes. I was just applying a little tar to some decorative rope-work on a spear I was making when curiosity struck me and I did a google search for the maker of the can I have. Pine tar goes about as far back as sailing does and it's smell, probably more than any other, is the one synonymous with the sea. I personally love the stuff, having grown accustomed to it when working about some columbus ship replicas years ago. If you want to duplicate history to the point of smelling the part try slapping a coat of tar on some rope-work, splatter a bit on some old rags of costume, or maybe rub some in to your hands to give them the dirty "handled a lot of rigging" look. If you want…

I covet a stylish pirate-themed air mattress for floating about on my northern lake this summer. It should be black, with a large white skull & crossbones on the pillow, and a lovely intertwining rope design bordering all the edges. Anybody find any pirate-patterned air mattresses out there? I'll even accept a piratey flutterboard! Cheers, Hester

Thought I'd try my hand at something new -- and while I had plenty of respect for you craftspeople out there, there's even more now. Found our old leather tools, and bought a bit of scrap at Tandy's, and started a few small projects. Pouches -- Started with a pretty basic drawstring pouch, and no problem, though I'm not sure that I'm using a good weight of thread. Any suggestions...? Flintlock holster -- Not too bad, though it is a bit messy here and there. I don't mind a bit of a rough look, but the first one may be a bit too rough. More practice should help out, I would think. Baldric -- Pretty much a huge failure, apart from the learning experience. Used too li…

Was just curious if anyone has ever seen a remote control pirate ship? I live near a lot of water (of course) and was thinking it that it might be fun to have one. I searched the net pretty good and couldn't find any, so thought I would check here and see if anyone knows where I could obtain such a ship?

For those who were fans of the British band The Libertines, you'll be pleased to know that the spin-off rival bands, Pete Doherty's Babyshambles and Carl Barat's Dirty Pretty Things both still have a piratey feel to their punk revival music and band merchandise. I bought the DPT t-shirt: ... available on-line here. I now covet (a pirate virtue, not a sin) a Babyshambles t , but I can't decide whether to get the sailing ship or the heart tattoo, or which colour. I am a seamstress, and have been doing theatrical costuming for over 20 years. My hobby has been to recreate outfits of individuals either from historical paintings, or from movies. I would like to recreate the outfit worn by Captain Jack Sparrow in the first movie. I would like to offer this for sale as a custom made outfit. Made to size for the purchaser. I can offer a fair and decent price. Theodora

It turns out that my frock coat I ordered from Carlisles will be getting here later this week or early next week, she just happened to have one in stock that just needed pressed, which was supposed to be done today. I have to say I've talked to this lady twice and she has been very helpfull and extremely nice. She works out of texas and it is just her hand making all of these clothes, which are really well made and would fit any pirate style. So if you have the money to spend (you pay for what you get) and are in the market for extremely well made garb for your kit, visit http://69.94.19.253/index.html.

Hoping someone knows... In Pennsylvania, you can carry a 'handgun' (such as a Queen Anne Flintllock Pistol) in a vehicle without a carry license if it's unloaded and you're on your way to or from a legal shooting place. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be the same exemption for carrying to/from a non-shooting reenactment. So in that case, what would you have to do to a flintlock so that it is no longer considered a firearm? Remove the flint? Fill the barrel with concrete? Anyone know?

Ok so after emailing Old Dominion forge and being told that they are not taking sword orders due to a two year back-order log, What else do you have? I mean they look like good swords but logisitcally I dont want to wait two years before I get another cutlass. What I need this cutlass for is not just some pretty show piece. I actually need a functional cutlass that I cant fight with. I am in a stage combat group that requires a high quality sword for functional use. Any ideas?

Was looking at Jas Townsend and Sons website to help a costumer out with finding boning for her stays and low and behold I see on their new items they have a oeriod folding chair now! Period? Well, let's just say... they are the type that are on the HMS Victory... in the Admiral's Quarters. So... if anyone has seen those... that's what it is. Ya want to see it? Here's the link: British Campaign Folding Chair I'm HIGHLY excited that these are out now. Pricy as it's $235. But... with them already documented and hell, that type of chair being on the HMS Victory... they are more authentic than those crappy canvas ones. If anyone has the ability to check out the HMS…

Fer any who are interested in such things, I have read many descriptions (including official court testimonies) of a pirate being so heavily armed that the observer was astonished that he could stand under the weight. I proceeded ta pack me baldric 'til there was no more room fer another weapon at all! The followin' be the result: Too bad I only got the two hands!

Kass, If I read the assembly instruction right, there is no 'band' at the bottom of the breeches legs to gather the legs into. Is that right? Also, what material(s) would be appropriate for the Trousers version? Is canvas the only way to go (as in the admiralty contracts) or would linen have also been used? Looking at the pictures of the period, some of them don't look (to me) like the way canvas would 'hang'. But maybe that's wishful thinking. Anyway, would appreciate your thoughts. TIA.

I was looking around the web for sites that sell codpieces (for beau's costume). I thought it would be a snap...NOT! Anyone know of any sites that have not the tradional ones but fanciful comical ones for faire. If not will have to make one out of papier mache for beau.
