We got a used sewing maching (rescued from one of my parent's closets) and my wife has been teaching herself to sew. And as a friend just had a child, we thought we should give a gift that just couldn't be mistaken for anyone else's. They're not quite the pyratical-types that we are, but they're not that far off (more Ren-faire bums). Maybe not the best quality out there, but we're still learning...

I was on a hardware store and noticed the visual shape similarity of the machette to a cutlass. As many of the folks here are "hobby pirates" rather than accurate reenactors, I was wondering what the thoughts were on using a machette as a "cheap stand in" for a cutlass. Before anyone starts, I know that the "real thing" is much more complex in construction, balance, blade cross section shape, and primarily hilt, among a number of other differences. This is one of the few times I may be suggesting a non-historical 'pirate kit" item- besides a kilt ) Thoughts??? Possible arguement for historical-> Machette is a common "bush" item and used heavily in Central and Sou…

The plans include a profile of the frigate and rigging as well as the individual decks and small boats. Copies of the draughts are being sold in pairs. One for framing. One for folding. Hello all! I just wanted you to know that I've added a page of Supplies for all who dare to tackle the Art of Pysanky! Just go to my www.clipclocks.com site (browse through the clocks too, of course!) and find the link to my Pysanky right on the home page. I have kits, dyes, egg blowers and beeswax. What fun we could have designing Pirate Eggs! :)

Okay gals, what do you wear for your Pirate Wench/Captain garb. Is it to be long pants, slops or skirts and fancy dress?

If you read Captain Twill, I am making a plastic model of a pirate ship. It will end up at 1/48 scale (1/4"=1'). I need a crew for its deck. They NEED to be about 1.25-1.5 (1 1/4 to 1 1/2) inches tall (scale 5-6 feet). That is 40mm for you wargame folks. I also need them to be fairly cheap. I want to get 30-40 of them for the upper deck. I can repaint even cheap solid color plastic ones. The HEIGHT is my main concern (beside LOOKING like 18th C. sailors-> No green army men please!). Do you know where I can get them?

I was surfing around eBay looking for a small brass mermaid for a project I'm contemplating (using my old POTC skeleton models) and I found this. THAT would definitely be something to have hanging in in your dining room. (I can't help but wonder about the original target market was.)

Last weekend while some were off at Re-enactor Fest 2, which I was supposed to go to (but couldn't, oh, woe is me... ) I did go to a Living History Trade Fair in North-East Ohio as my placebo... And while there I found this little toy. It is a copy of a more Rev-War type of canon (mortar), but I thought it's amusement value would out-weigh it's slightly out of period character.... Anyway, here is a link of a mySpace video I made of this toy in action. Hope you enjoy! Firing of the canon! I managed to pick up some other items while there, some that might pertain to this period, others for my other period of interest... The trade fair as a whole had a fairly strong …

Ahoy Mates! I am thinking of buying a new cutlass and wondered if you historical types could point me in the direction of the best and most authentic commercially available replica of a cutlass on the market today? I would prefer it to be a functional replica, not a wall hanger made with cast metal parts. I have found one on the internet, referred to on several sites as a "rustic pirate's cutlass", and so far it is closest to fitting my bill, but I thought you all might know of somewhere else that had one a bit better. I like the plain, no-nonsense, aged and worn look of this cutlass. To my mind it comes closer to the type of sword a common pirate would have had. Than…
