Fair winds do blow my way! I have been contracted by Carthage College to design and teach a course--"Pirates: Facts and Fictions" for their January term. This will be working with material from my doctoral dissertation, but goes beyond those narrow confines even to the point of exploring films! Yarr! I have some ideas for the course and I will definitely be using films to explore the mythology of pirates, a transformation that even contemporary histories were already working to engender. We will be reading Esquemelin's "History of the Buccaneers of America" and portions of Defoe/Johnson's "General History of the Pyrates" so they can get a feel of the "reality" of p…

*jumps up and down with joy!* I got an early birthday present today, it brought a smile to my face. I sent Geoffrey Rush a letter back in late September and today I got a photo and a note from him. I scanned the front of the pic and then the back of it that has the little note. The photo of us together that he's talking about is the picture in my signature. I gave him a copy of that pic. I guess he liked it, lol! Here's the scanned pix:

I figured this area was a good place to post this because it is about the movie. And of course, yes, there's spoilers ahead. Ye have be warned! Anyway, I found this fan fic and thought it was pretty funny! It takes places after the 3rd movie. Elizabeth joins Barbossa and Jack in search of the Fountain of Life. She'll need it to stay young and immortal to keep up with Wil. So, the 3 of them eventually find the Fountain of Life, but something goes wrong. It's pretty funny what happens to them, lol! I like the way this person writes. An Embarrassing Turn of Events

Thought you ought to know....the USA network this weekend is airing 'One'....but weirdly, the beach scene with jack & Elizabeth has an added scene. Jack shows Elizabeth 2 gunsot wounds on his chest, then they both take a couple more swigs of rum on the beach (daylight). I think I recall these scene in the supplemental disc, but not really the movie. I guess USA needed to fill some time voids between the advertisements.

The minute I signed off this board I was fortunate to catch a new TV episode of Globetrekker "Galleons, Pirates, & Treasure" on Channel 21 WLIW here in NY/NJ. They did a whole special on Port Royal Jamaica, Rum bars, Ann Bonny's/Mary Read's jail cell, the island where Jack Rackam was hanged, various shipwrecks, Key West & some reenactors (though no mention of PIP, those weevils), Blackeard, etc. pretty good, and they are selling a $19.95 dvd of the episode Globtrekker: Galleons, Pirates & Treasure....though the wesite only said "tbd" of this episode ( I guess it's because it's recent). Nice to see all that aqua colored water in Key West. The follo…

A couple of weeks ago, I remember a news story about an abandoned boat, some murder victims off the coast of Florida: Joe Cool ....and eerily, it reminded me of a CSI Miami episode, which re-runs regularly: CSI: Pirated I guess the only thing missing was Horatio Caine's usual Captain Kirk/Steve MacGarrett swagger.

PIRATES OF POINT LOMA ********************* Comes to Old Town (San Diego) in October. World premiere Oct. 12, 2007 with previews beginning Oct. 5th. Presented at the Compadre Theatre at the Adobe Chapel, 3950 Conde Street in Old Town San Diego. San Diego may have been a sleepy backwater in 1850, while Northern California was running wild with gold-rush fever, but that didn’t stop the birthplace of California from producing its own band of genuine pirates, according to a couple of early San Diego writers. These pirates had a base on the west side of the Coronado Islands and they preyed on gold-laden sailing ships headed south from San Francisco. Or so goes the s…

I am not sure where to put this. I am hoping to be fairly historically accurate, but it really isn't, as it is not based on any one specific ship. So, here is my (initial and basic) background for my model of a "pirate ship." The model has been discussed on the Pub before. (Now: remember the model, itself, is a 1/96th scale USS Constitution that has converted into a 1/48 scale ship. The deck is modified by removal/not putting on model the top deck in front of the rear mast. Accordingly, it also is only using 1/2 the gun-ports on the model and the gun deck is open topped. So, it will only have 26 minions.) The Thistle was originally laid down to be a privateer in Quee…
