I have a tool laying around that needs a new handle. It is a hatchet on one side and a hammer on the other. (Edit: See post below for much closer pict) Is there a proper name for it? I was digging around stuff in my shed and found it with a rotten wooden handle. I think it came with the house. I don't recall buying it.

The last few days we have been working on several Peter Pan sets for stage shows. We had to keep the cost down but we had room to have some fun. First is Captain Hook's hook.

I was just wondering if anyone would know how to build a spring for a flintlock. Can I cast it in steel and then have it tempered to make it spring steel? Does it need to be made as a flat piece then bent 180 degrees? What steel do I need? Can I cut something like a car spring down then heat and bend it and retemper it? Since this is a home built lock I can't simply substitute in a spring from another lock

OK, I'm sure this is a problem that everyone has had at one time or another, and I'm sure there are about a hundred solutions. So please share! My pistol (Loyalist Doglock) doesn't want to keep a firm hold of the ramrod - it slides right out. This of of course is problematic, as when clipped to my belt the ramrod is in prime position to silently make its escape. I've already lost one, and would rather not lose this replacement. Any tips?

I have been back reading alot in the twill and gathering much information along the "common" threads that keep surfacing and it is surprising how often a way to carry pistols has come up. We know from literature that pistols have been worn on baldrics, on belts with hooks, as well as having ribbons tied around them. The paintings we have seem to raise more questions than providing answers. Rather than trying to recreate an artists impression why don't we use our experience and try to engineer something that would logically work and once that is done go back to the drawings and see how it compares. For example as a pirate on a boarding party you would want to carry as …

Im sorry I don't have a camera right now so pictures are not an option. A while back I was with the Viceroy and came across a flintlock pistol for sale. The "story" was that this was one of a number of locks found in a warehouse decades ago and used to build pistols, the Viceroy confirmed this commenting that he had a couple of these at home himself. Unfortunatly these locks appeared to be destined for muskets so the pistols that were built are in poor taste for accuracy as the lock is much too large. I purchased this pistol and brought it home. I sanded down and polished the lock making it shine beautifully, however simple oile was not enough to keep the rust at bay…

After recieving a 660 naval bronze mortar from a fellow by the name of "Powder Keg" we were very impressed by his work. We decided the best approach for our Scuba vessel would be to get Wes (Powder Keg) to turn 4 new guns from 416 Stainless Steel for us. We hunted around a bit for a pattern we liked and for what we thought would allow us to ship as cheap as possible overseas., as well as bang for the buck. Also we thought about being exposed to salt water and chose marine grade Stainless. Working with Wes also allows us to modify whatever we want to the cannon. We decided to buff up the trunnions a bit add length as well so we can use thicker cheeks on our carriages (g…

I have a lage lock that is very out of place on a pistol. I would like to take this lock and build a blunderbuss for it. I have been looking and found a variety of blunderbusses but it would be a great help to me if I could get some help as to dates and when styles changed.

I was watching the movie "Alatriste" over the weekend and they show a few Spainards spike a series of cannons. I imagine that given time the touch hole could be drilled out or a new one bored in. Just wondered if that indeed intended to the gun was ruined or just a hassle to repair?

Anybody have good stories about these? We had an awesome party here last night, and my new friend and I decided to have a drunk sword fight. First battle wound was my right thumb, it felt like someone smacked my thumb with a hammer, which is why I didn't check it first. It just hurt... So, it's going good and I keep winning, but she got me completely by accident and it was a good hit. I was standing in front of her, and she turned really fast and was still holding said sword up, and it caught my left eyebrow and split it wide open...and I fell to the ground because it hurt, lol. Anyone catches a blade to the dome, it's gonna hurt! Then I noticed my thumb was gushing b…

I've watched people clean cannons swabbing with water followed by swabbing with motor oil . They did not dry out the barrel before applying the oil so it occurs to me this might actually keep water in contact with the barrel liner longer then not applying oil, although the oil would limit exposure to the air. It seems to me wither swabbing with a dry patch until all water was removed or depressing the barrel and allowing to dry before applying the oil would be preferable. I am curious as to what procedures our those of you who own and/or fire cannons use?

I made a short video of casting some bronze eagle heads today. Thought you might get a kick out of it. Shame I didnt get a picture of some of the PC swords that got mounted with the eagles before they went out, but you get the idea.

Me mother found this in th' attic, naught sure if it belong'd t' a relative or if she found it on one o' her many antique plunder'n missions t' build th' room I grew up in as a kid (it was all decked out like a ship's cabin). It certainly is naught o' GAoP era and th' leather is pretty rotted out. I am considering if I should strip th' brass parts t' rebuild it for garb; unless someone can identify it and toss up a red flag that it may be worth keeping as it. Certainly can naught be worn in its current condition with the leather so rotted but all brass parts are still in fine condition. The pouch has wooden inserts on the two ends and appears to have very thin wood that…

my cannon project is coming along and it is getting to the point of adding small item to the operation of the gun. i have been searching the web and books for what was used to run the cannon cartridge to the gun crew for loading. i'm trying to look at the early 1700's time frame. the leather or wooden case seems to have surfaced in the mid to late 1700's, holding the cartridge under one coat was read in on book and i know about the ladel and bunge barrel or powder bag. i have been on CW naval guns i know the modern artillery rules "leather pouch". i would be thankful for any thoughts, referances or an old thread that i have missed even opinions. thanks

While I see numerous examples of powder horn usage, I'm not seeing any period reference material to pirates and powder horns. Were they used by sailors/pirates? Or were the gun powder bandolier holders more used? I've not seen much if any reference to either on board a ship.

I've been trying to search the forum and Google for information on "cargo hooks." It is something my hubby mentioned on the way home from the New London Con, but I am having trouble finding info, all I found was a snippet from the Institute of Nautical Archeology naming a cargo hook as something they found... My questions: What exactly is a cargo hook? What did it look like? Was it used as a weapon? Was it used during the GAoP? Thanks!

I were on E-bay ( as I usualy do) looking for new armament for the Hellion, when I realized that there are loads of cannon being offered there as 'firing' cannon and upon close examination of the pictures, I realized that many are basically desk paperweights and the like, being sold, in error or on purpose, as firing cannon. For those thinkin upon buying new long guns, be wary. What to stay away from: Small Brass barreled cannon with solid cast iron carriage - these are souvenier cannon and are NOT usable Bronze or Brass barreled guns, known as lantaka, usualy offered from Borneo - these are cheap, badly casted repros. They look like fancy, long swivel guns. Very oc…
