Hi all! I've been working on some "Getting Dressed Guides" for the new website, and the first one is finished. I'll add some links to pictures and stuff later, but you can read the basic article now: Getting Dressed Guide for Women

One of the greatest places to find garb/costume stuff is your local thrift store. Don't have any around, just tell me or other store searchers what you're looking for and we might just find it for you. Lets start with men's coats. Look for those long coats....many are wool. You can add sleeve cuffs out of different material. By simply removing cheesy buttons and replacing them with more 'period' ones works well and perhaps a small amount of trim can do wonders. Men's vests, many aren't 'period' but you can certainly make them so or turn them into the new 'steampunk' versions of pirates. I've cut up corduroy pants and used pieces for garb, I've found women's blouses tha…

OK... I got to take inventory of the contents of my Ditty bag, but I was making a Pepsi can stove, and needed my awl... of course the awl is in the Ditty Bag, that's where I keep tools like that.... A Ditty Bag is where you keep small tools for sewing and rope work... (well and the awl that I needed for the Pepsi Can stove.) I'll take and post a picture of my Ditty bag in a day or so... (I think I've posted it before)... and more importantly what is in it.... And the contents DON'T have to be Period, just what you use and want to keep in your Ditty Bag. But post 'em if you got them....

andrew and i have started stage fighting with the local rennie group ... ( yes, it is by a certified teacher ) their training uses rapiers , so we bought two, yet they have no scabbards... kinda guess they figure that these are for stage combat, not wearing out and about... dunno so, i wanna make scabbards for them, and can use them for an earlier portrayal as well... searched on the web for for a few idears and came up pretty much empty handed... i want to make them out of thick leather as opposed to the standard wood and then leather wrap typical for a cutless does any one have a link or two they'd like to share with us ??

lookey lookey what i ran over leaving work. yup, got onto the interstate and saw this sitting upside down on the side of the road. So I turned myself around at the next "authorized use only" median and went back to fetch it. Well it came up so quickly that I ran it over on the recovery lap. Still in good shaped- its a townsend. Now, to leave it or modify?

I recently produced the following two charts for use in my shop and thought I'd share them here. These are to produce a regular over one/under one weave in as large or small a turkshead or mat as you'd like from one continuous piece of line. A description of use follows each picture: We pretty much all know how to tie the most common turkshead - the 3 bight x 5 lead in hand but what other sizes are possible? To use this chart, read the bights across the top then follow down the column to the number of leads you are looking at. If the space is blank then this is a possible turkshead. If the space is shaded out then it is not. For example, Lets say you are tying a …

So I made my first all linen shirt and I love it. I wish I would have made these from the beginning. So on to the questions. What would be the most appropriate way to close the sleeves and neck? Currently I have nothing on the neck and buttons for the sleeves. Would ties be more accurate? If so how long should they be? What kind of ties? I would try and sew up a couple of small tubes out of the same material.

I am looking for examples and replicas of the Burgundian Spanish Cross that i can make or use as a badge for example for on a cartridge pouch. Until now I have nothing that could be used for such. Is there anyone who can point me to such an artefact or maybe even a reproduction? Either brass brons or tin would be fine with me. I can also maybe have someone cast these for me but even then I do need an example... Thanks!

I stumbled onto this site tonight, and since scrimshaw is a history with travelers I thought I would share. He does amazing and beautiful work. http://www.pyrate.com/ Ironic how his site is close to this URL, eh? While I don't agree with whale hunting or harpooning, commerically, there are some aborignial people that depend on it as a right of manhood. You'll notice that he speaks about harpooning, etc, on his site, that's why I mentioned this. Beautiful pendants, and so. :) I respect this type of artistic ability. Isabella

I am trying to find some good photos of extant clothing for the 1690-1720 ( Actually, closer to 1720) with good shots of the buttons. I would settle for paintings etc. Most of my books don't have good photos of Gentleman's clothing in this period.... I know that later in the century the buttons were buttons that were moulds covered in fabric with designs embroidered into them but the earlier ones seem to be a wooden mould wrappedwit thread and have designs woven into that.... What do you guys think?

until recently, i have been using plastic tarps from the hardware store ,and covering it with canvas drop cloths as a ground cloth... recent rains have shown that water still bleeds through the woven plastic tarps... i think it was patrick hand that mentioned cnavas treated for an effective ground cloth is heavier than you would believe, which makes it close to impractical ( for him on an airplane ) short of using plastic sheeting, what else is available as an effective h2o barrier ??

Anyhow it got me thinking. how does everyone move their gear and how do they have their vehicles set up to move it?

So, a friend recently suggested I should make a 'pirate' violin. I mulled the idea over for a few weeks and yesterday started work. I'm not going to give anything away until it's done, partly because I think it'll be fun to surprise folks and partly because ideas might change on the way and I don't want my original plans being held against me. So here's day 1 progress:

I have a gray coat that is not finished yet. It started out as a old west style coat but Ive been looking at it and I'm thinking of changing the lapels and making it more into the style of coat Tim Curry wore in Muppet Treasure Island. Having a hard time finding pics or references to exactly what style they were going for or basing the design off of. Anybody have pics or links that would help?

HI friends! I’m from Argentina and I’m trying to recreate a corsair moorish woman who lived in Al- Andalus at the first half of 14th century. Her name was Malika Fadel ben Salvador, if you know she. I´m looking for cloth hints and hope maybe you could help me. Is there a file with details of this period? Thank you very much.
