  1. The outer is 4 1/2" and the bore is 2.68 . I know what your thinking !!!! I cheated ..., well I do not cheat on metal ., thats how accidents happen ., it is very important to stick to the rules. ! Caliber Rule minimum. As you can see the Projo (Beer~Can) Sits at the bottom of the bore ., where there is a 1 1/4"Sub Chamber in the 4"Breach ;) . Just so everyone knows ., The Coehorn design ., was invented by a Dutchman ., Baron Von Coehorn I believe in the 1640's thus being period correct thru WWI used in the European trench wars. What Coehorn really invented ., was this sub~chamber idea ., as it allowed thinner barrel walls ., with a meaty breach ., I.E. Civil War Mountain Howitzers for example ., these Howitzers were sub~chambered using Coehorn idea. The Idea was his way of creating a mortar 4 men could carry. One man on each corner could carry a 24lb mortar wherever it needed to be in battle. Much lighter. Look down my barrel ., I know its not a good photo .,but you can see the sub~chamber.

  2. Hey, Harbormaster, not to hijack the thread, but what is your beer can mortar made out of? I know a guy who re-purposed the cylindar barrel from an old hydraulic garbage truck ram (his logic being it is already pressure rated at comparable forces) and made it into a beer can-non.

Old Hydraulic stuff is good steel. Could even be DOM ., I bet its buffed ., We used 660 Bronze

  3. casketchris . Your 1 7/8 bore is a 1.875 caliber bore. If you divide that by 40 you'll get 0.046875. Now if you multiply this figure by 39 ., you'll come up with 1.828125 . If it were me I would have your ball mold made at 1.825 . This would allow you the correct ., 1/40'th windage ., for maximum propulsion while not having it so tight its a bomb. It should easily slide down the bore at this size . Also be sure to properly worm and wet mop / dry mop between rounds. This will keep your bore clear and clean so you maintain your correct 1/40'th windage ., as well as extinguishing any burning embers. Also you'll maintain a much better consistency with your shots. I am not sure about golf balls. I haven't got any golf ball caliber artillery. However I understand people love that size ., 25 balls for 5 bones at Wal~Mart. I believe a Golf~Ball bore is 1.68 therefore the proper bore would be 1.725 . You'll probably lose some gusto with that on a 1 7/8's bore and a golf ball. Remember to NEVER patch a ball to make up for this when using 1" or greater bores. Capt Thighbiter's Can and Concrete technique is a good way to go . It makes for a nice conical ., and usually at whatever bore size you have ., the concrete weighs a small amount less than the lead ball. ., Still giving outstanding performance while reducing a bit of pressure off the breach. I have a beer can mortar and I love it. Concrete and cans make damn good ammo.

Yes guns change to cannons starting at 1". Good Luck Sir with your new acquisition . It is a fine piece of ordinance to be sure.

  4. A thunder mug sounds good , and so does an old English 1/2 scale 12 pound mortar. Youll need to bore to 2.68 in order to fire cans filled with concrete. Then build a sub chambered breach plug 2.69 ., freeze the plug and heat the barrel to do a seat fit with interference. then lathe turn the design and build a propper trunnion bar with nice welds on the plug. Its possible you could do a rev Daniel King Howitzer No#2 That would be nice . ., To use tube for anything you'll really need to sleeve the inside or band the outside to meet the 1 caliber rule . For example ., sleve the dom inside with a 2.55 X 1.5 bore sleeve ., then you would have your 4 1/2 outside diameter and a 1 1/2 bore ., then you could turn out some 1/3 scale british 18 pounders ! Lots of good things can come from that stick of DOM. Good luck.

  5. To know the dimensions would help alot.

What is the bore size ?

What is the breach size ?

Is it a casting ? You cannont control pourosity during a pour .

Is it machined from billet (Solid Round Bar) ?

I forgot to mention it is a beatiful scale model of a Rodman ........., Except Rodmans have no cascabel ., they simply had elevation notches aon the rear face of the breach.

  6. I tried to avoid to this thread for obvious reasons ....., but ., lets talk about this thing.

Castings are weak and brittle ., Yes I have 6 castings and 10 machined barrels. I moved UP to machined after many years of study and learning ., You know when you first get something you cut corners cause you dont know., later you get wiser ? Yea ., me too. You find out about rules ., start reading about PSI testing., Alloys ., Powder tests ., bores ., ect .,

    (6) Heat / Cold Interferance fit and bolted into a mill pocket . Machined from superior metals to high tolerances.

Just curious about these comments ? We are talking trunnions from a safety point?

    O.K.

Then I must ask what good is your casted (Porous) trunnion when your breach isnt as thick as the bore is large on the most critical point?

The high pressures built are at the breach not the trunnions mid-section ., and recoil is why they have wheels .., to ease recoil on the weapon. Amazing.

This is directed for Mr. Thighbiter. Also sir if you would like to bring this topic up at GBO's Cannon forum where there are actual cannon makers your more than welcome to. After all you are a member there. This is directed at your Wild imports gun. I have one ., I wouldnt use mine at an event where people are present knowing what I know ( and Yes I do know Osvaldo)., so I have filled mine with concrete. I didnt crack on your 385 dollar greystar barrel you got from Tim ., that had a seemed 1/8' water pipe for a liner. I know Tim. Also i didnt crack on you when you tried to sell it to a board member for 900 bux ., but I am cracking now. Lets talk about this at the GBO cannon forum sir where it belongs .

Since we are talking about castings., I am sure Mr. Hawkins knows about NSSA rules and I wont question his cannons ., But I will anyone elses. If your casting is not an original ., then it MUST be X-rayed ., do any of you have X-rays? If not youve got a lawn ornament. You wont be able to live fire at any sanctioned event . Of course you can pop it off at home and risk the lives of your loved ones or on some dock somewhere ., or a ren fair., But Nssa wont allow to risk the public at their event. Live Fire People ., Your talking about trunnions when youve had a greystar and a wild imports cannon ??????? Even the English Gun I am sure has no liner or X-Ray. Without an X-Ray YOU dont know ., neither does anyone else about the porosity of your casting.

I have shared my cannons with board members. Please fellas shed some light on your credentials and your cannons., please let us see some photos of your toys? They did infact re-invent the wheel fellas. The pro's did ., Mr. parrot ., Captain Dalgren ., we've evolved to a machined gun over 100 years ago. Because metals became superior to out dated alloys. the U.S. military is the best ., and theyve re-invented the wheel.

The Mighty mo was a MACHINED cannon firing a 2000 pound projo with 25lb bags of powder .,and your telling me not to trust a machined barrel. I respect you. but not here ., not on this thread and not with these statements. I am very grateful the navy didnt try to fire that projo with all that powder with a casted trunnion ..., what do you think ?

    Captain Jim

I will start a thread on broken castings to demonstrate why NSSA wont allow them without propper machined breaches using DOM and X-RAYS . However Machined guns from solid round bar dont need lined or X-Rayed ...., I cant believe you guys dont know this stuff ., yet your commenting with some authority ?????.,Round bar thats about as solid as it gets.., They ARE a liner. Sorry for that rant but I found this thread to be filled with ignorance. Again please state your personal credentials on metalurgy ., cannon construction ., basic dimensional knowledge. And show us your proof of what you say .,pictures are good. Can we see your cannons? I can show mine and already have. There are formula for building ., there is a formula for Breach to bore ., bore to length unless howitzer or mortar (Even a mortar has a bore to length formula. And you got it ., there is trunnion to bore formula. I invite picures of broken machined cannon ., please expand on this phenomenon ., as I am going to start a thread on castings so others can see the importance of being safe ., perhaps it will help educate new cannoneers of safety ., no-kidding.

If you guys already know everything please take no offense ., however if your not to proud hop on over to Greybeard outdoor and join the forum ., there is alot of guys there that are very involved in documenting whats in our inventory as well as saving them all over the country from Bronze disease. research ., creating ., and restoring. Theres alot to learn there. There are experts there . I learn from them and then I do what they tell me .,or I have it done or I go there to ask ., or I write a letter to Mr.Switlik for advice.. If anyone cares to pick up a copy the more complete cannoneer I believe Matt will be releasing his latest revision this spring. Matt Switliks "The more complete cannoneer"is a must read for anyone firing a black powder cannon.

  7. Exactly Cast Trunnions are easily broken ., Klink ! Many cannons in parks around the country are missing cascabels . Cast Cannons varied greatly with the one inherant problem castors could not control even in the 21rst century . Porosity ! That is a big problem. This is why the NSSA has rules ., and why the cannon was improved over time. I have many examples perhaps I will start another thread. However here is something worth reading for all of you. Here is a story of a sucessful trunnion field repair.., that did infact take place in the field .

    Please enjoy this read.

    Broken trunnion story

You really want to put the gun out of action completely? Blow the trunnions off...

Out of period, but it seems to me that back when I was doing Rev War, that I read in the orders from General Howe, that the British troops sent out from Boston to take charge of any war material stored at Concord were instructed to "knock the trunnions from any cannons found", presumably using a large hammer. Seems reasonable to me. I would suspect that the technique had been fairly standard for quite some time. I really don't know how they could be blown off easily, but some well-place blows from a sledgehammer would do nicely, at least on the average field gun.

    >>>> Cascabel

  8. I am sorry to learn of your misfortune and glad you are able to post Your ability to reflect with us is a testiment to your character and your tenacity. God Bless you sir ., get well soon.

Any scarring will only add to your character :P

  9. I'm currently working on a knife and belt sheath. Something I've wanted to do for a few years now. Patrick Hand posted a pic of a straight blade he made a few years ago showing a handle he pined with I think it was brass rod? Anyway I am trying my hand at fabricating a cannoneers knife using Patricks ideas and methods on the handle. The Cannoneers knife will have a brass blade ., since it dont spark.

  10. I was watching my copy of "Kidnapped" with Armand Asante as Alan Brecht Stuart

I love that movie ., ánother wonderful story from Robert Louis Stevenson ., I got it on DVD about 5 years ago for my collection. Who ever hasnt seen it should ., its a fun movie and was under-rated.

  11. Here you go .,it was alot easier thanI thought ., just google Obama Gun Bible Comment and you get a HUGE list.http://kingsrightsite.blogspot.com/2008/04/obama-calls-midwest-voters-gun-toting.html

    heres another

    and another

I've supported every president weve ever had ., I always will even if I dont agree with them during the election. I think as an American I should stand for our president. I think people in our population give comfort to our enemies when they bash a president I will defend their right to do it as I am hating them. And any president loses my loyalty when he takes away my rights. That starts with the 1rst and 2nd amendments . Dont Tread On Me.

  12. I will try to locate it for you ., it was during the primaries ., he didnt use the word freak ., however it was refering to people in Pennsylvania with hand-guns and religeous beliefs. He did apologize for it. He said he mis-spoke ., all politicians say they mis-speak ., If I mis-speak they call it something else.

It was on the news ., it was something he said on his plane and a reporter caught it on tape and leaked it ., I do not know that i can find it in print ..., I will look for it

I guess we are held accountable for what we say ., unless you are a politician ? My original post on this topic wasnt to offend ., I am sorry if I mis-spoke ;) . . None of my posts are geared at anyone. I think sometimes we all get frustrated ., sometimes its nice to vent to our online friends and personally I learn from the inter-action. I do in fact have much to learn.

My original post was to say I have found this sort of topic in other forums (Topic apparently about PC or Hollywood) thats all I meant to say.

I am sort of confused as too how PC or Hollywood even came up tho since it isnt even in the thread title. I'll see if I can bring this to the thread title.

I think Captain Sterling has a valid point.

    The title being

What do you hate in a pirate?

So I guess I will address the topic. What I dislike the most ? Which is no matter what you wear PC or Hollywood. It is the way in which one speaks. I can observe someone in PC clothing or Hollywood clothing and yet they try to portray themselves with an extremely poor English or Irish accents . I find this completely ridiculous and absurd. I grew up in LA try to imagine if you will a Mexican American with a heavy Spanish accent trying to sound Irish ? I was born in America on the west coast and there isnt anything I can do to sound English (some on the east coast I must admit sound pretty good) . To speak PC correct English with correct accent and be able to put it together correctly (in the right context) ., as opposed to a few people running around tossing movie quotes. I feel Pirates were GLOBAL (After all Magellan had accomplished his feat 179 years earlier) and in 1700 their were Pirates in China., but no one goes around trying to sound like a Chinese pirate . If they did everyone would think they are messed up? But there was Chinese pirates. For me the phony accent is the part that gets me the most ......, there I said it . This gets me more than Hot-Topic or a pair of Bucket Boots. I think people should sound the way they actually are ... A pirate or any other citizen back in this day we are refering to ..., they acted the way they were ! So why do so many think they have to sound phony to get with the program?

When was they last time anyone saw a Dutch re-enactor speaking Dutch ? or a Spaniard speaking the Kings tongue ? Now that sounds PC to me. If it sounds phony it takes from whatever you are wearing ., It ruins it for me. This is pretty much why I stick to myself ., try be myself ., do my own thing ., my way ., because ., in my mind ., at least I am being me. No I dont attend events. We dress for ourselves and enjoy it for the day ., We fire cannons and flinters Scuba Dive and have fun ...., I guess everyone is entitled to do as they please . I hope everyone has fun .,do as they please ., and stays safe.

  13. I enjoy a few other interests besides this one . Scuba Diving is definitely my favorite then scale cannoneering and finally SASS (Single Action Shooting Society). SASS is alot of fun ., however bad tempers arent permitted at events ., You have to remember most of us are as Barrack Obama called us Gun Carrying Bible freaks ? Well needless to say a loaded weapon 2nd amendment rights and a concealed weapons permit demand responsability and cool temperment. A .45 Long Colt or a 12 guage should never get into an arguement. Here is an copy and paste from from a SASS forum . This is sort of along the same issue ..., I am posting this so that you can all see that., Playing Pirate is not the only enviroment you can be involved in that has its share of arguements.

    Howdy Pards and Pardettes.

I just got to get my oar in the water here. The good Rev always is able to start a spirited discussion on his favorite topic, Period Correctness, or PC for short. The Rev seems to think that SASS is about "The American West" as it really was. It isn't, it is about how the "cowboy kids" thought it should have been.

I have no idea how old you are, but when I was a kid there were about a jillion "Westerns" on the TV. They all wore tight jeans, not always blue, and a shirt, fancy or not, but not what was worn in the 1800s and maybe a vest. They all had the wrong hats, and all wore droploop buskie rigs. The only exceptions were "Wyatt" and "Bat" who wore fancy clothes.

Most of the Saturday Morning TV was old Western Movies and Serials. SASS, as per the people who invented it, was supposed to find the little kid in all of us who played cowboy when they were little. The SASS Universe is taken from those old movies, both A and B westerns, and TV.

If we examine that Universe you will find Winchester '92s with the forearm removed being used as Henry's, also find SAAs in the same movie about the Civil war. We find double action swingout cylinder revolvers with phony ejector rod housings added. SASS is a fantasy, it is about being a little kid again and trying to live up to the codes that Hoppy, Gene, Roy, and the Lone Ranger had for us to abide by. It is about trying to be as good a Pard as the heros were.

Rev if you wish to compete in Classic Cowboy go right a head and God Bless you, but if you try to make all of us go there you have missed the whole point of this organization. It is about being a kid again, and playing in your version of The Old West now that we have money and are old enough to play with real guns.

Dang Rev, I am not sure you really grasp the importance of that, we must all stay in touch with that little kid inside and let him/her out once in a while to PLAY. You want to make it some kind of research paper, or some such other work, stop it. Play the game your Little kid wants to play and let the other kids play the way they want.

The more I am around people .., The more I enjoy Scuba Diving and Spear-Fishing ., The Locker is more peaceful than Legend describes it. I cant hear any bitching when I am down in the locker mate. Its a true peaceful bliss in the octopus's garden...., Until TWANGO !!!! Spearing into a tuna ., and the fight is on !!! Its just me and Dinner Baby !!!

  14. Did anyone else get the new calendar/catalog for 2009? They really had some fun doing it looks like. I also wanted to mention the 1750's long waistcoat in linen looks really good, and they now offer different linen colors, Add four more buttons to the front and it really looks in-period too. just a thought.

    Bo

I got the "Caladog" or Catelander." It made me want to camp with them.

Me too ! Its got a place in our office already.

  15. I dont mind the snow now that I am retired ., I just dont like it at 10:00 p.m. when I havent started my back-hoe for 3 months.

I try to be a good neighbor tho any way ., and yes ., they know I am a freak. Later after I changed out of my Jammers (sweat-pants) me an the wife went for a city wide cruise on the back-hoe ., and we go on the prowl now at night with it.

We made her just for fun.

Your blade looks amazing . Anyway to see more pics of your work in process. Not asking you to reveal tricks of your trade ., I just enjoyed one of your sword thread of process shots. Great Work Sir ., Kudo's ! Beautiful. 5.gif3.gif

  17. If recruited how would I do it? that requires more than I know., I dont have enough info on the complete area logistics and my tools. I am thinking that sub thing sounds fun ;) like a video game !

Some of these things are deeper than whats been portayed here. Violence stopped Hitler and his followers . Violence stopped Hirahito and his followers. Will getting a job for a Muslim Extremist stop him from a lifelong brainwashing to hate the Infidel. Hating me because i am not a muslim? I just cant believe hooking him up with a new Hyundai and a house in the suburbs will definitely take away a lifelong upbringing that if you are not a muslim you need to be killed? the fact is 1/2 of our planet is now muslim ., I'll bet a couple of them have jobs ., houses and cars. They are still plotting against us.

I think this stuff has deeper roots. The war on terror is a 1000 years old already ., its just now we are back in the game. The USS Constitution was built to combat it. Does anyone remember history with Muslim Pirates selling white folks as slaves in Libya? the Marines ? From the shores of Tripoli ? There is a global expansion of a religeon trying to take over property. Most wars I find are about three things.

    1. Someone wants someone elses property (Land)

    2. Someone wants someone elses money (Russia just took Georgia-this is money ---Oil--- )

    3. Here it comes ...., the big one ., the Heavy ., the long time problem ....., Religeon .

Yes I am proud to be an infidel ., yes I support killing bad people who want to take over someone elses property. Yes I believe in stopping killers by giving them death. I believe we arent thorough enough. Islam started in Mecca ., it now is 1/2 the globe ., isnt that agressive? Speaking of muslims ., didnt Clinton send troops to Kosovo to stop the killing of Muslims? shoot we are STILL there. We just dont here about it ., But NATO is still there ., I believe we pay for that and man it . How come the Extremists didnt thank us?

Funny old world aint it? Here we save France after De Gaul laid down ., and we killed people to free France ., and then they HATE us?

I am trying to remember when it was france won a major engagement ., but I cant ., I guess it was Napoleons day ;)

By the way Nagasaki and Hiroshima was done to save lives ., and infact they estimate millions of American and Japanese lives ., yes even Japanese lives were spared by ending WWII the way we did. WWII in the Pacific would have went on . The Japanese mentality was to die for the emporer .., The were not giving up ., period. Hiroshima got hammered and they still did not give up so.., Nagasaki. The mentality and programming of some in the world is not like ours ., most are not free societies ..., when was the last time one of our jet pilots went Kamakazi ? If we sit idley by and let threats grow without keeping them in check ., will people stop trying to kill us? No.

Dictators like Hugo Chavez find freedom a threat to his power. Have we really wronged him? He is preaching hatred to us ., and he is not muslim ., Our Freedom and Democracy theatens Power to dictators thugs and bullies ...., there are groups plotting against us for all sorts of reasons ., Yes we have brought upon us problems also ..., its just a very complicated issue. We helped Israel after WWII so we are VeRY hated for that ., religeon again ., yes?

I like Nuclear Aircraft carriers ., and FA 18 Super-Hornets ., I think unmanned drones and Raptors are Bitchín' I like my tax money going to keep us safe. If they wanna write in a $17,000.00 dollar toilet seat ., to hide a part for a secret project ., to keep us ahead of the game ., I am happy ., I love paying 62,000 for a box of screws knowing they are funding projects at the Kwajalein Atoll ., so that one day we might be able to stop a missle ., then retaliate on the sender hard enough they wont be sending another anytime soon. I paid more in taxes last year than my wife made at her fulltime job. Now I am disabled and dont make a dime ., yep it hurts ., Do I wish I had all of that tax money back ( I could surely use it ., funny how life goes up and DOWN) Hell no I am proud for every dime spent . Hoorah! We have much to be grateful for.

Yea ., violence has stopped a few idiots.

I supported Clinton , I support Bush ., and I will support Obama ., We should support our president. Funny how after the election promises the presidents fail to keep the promises because the reality of whats really happening comes more into view when the daily security reports come in. We live in a scarey world ..., I am really really grateful to be an American. And I have been to several countries that are pro-American ., and they are Grateful there is an America in this world. The worlds problems are never going to be solved by not killing .,killers. Something to think about as well.

  18. If'n I was the gov, I would hire mercenaries. Mostly because dead mercs cost nothing.

3rd party would be the way to go.

See ., thats just it ., our government redered the CIA virtually useless ..., this happened a long time ago. I think is was during the Carter Administration :P . If the CIA and Naval Intelligence had free reign to protect this country in covert operations things might be alot differant.

  19. My father and I out having fun. We dress up a bit when we shoot Single Action Army Ruger Vaqueros and of course the American Derringer from Waco Texas. This isnt for an event (we dont do events) ., we just believe in paying a bit of historical respect when firing our favorite cartridge weapons.

    Me_Dad001.jpg

Several of my friends are into it as well here is Al dressed up paying homage to some R & R (Yes we shoot safe) the bottle is a prop ......., until the shootins over and the cleanning kits are out ., I cleanem ., (I trust me) ., Yes I drink while I am cleanin

  20. Wes worked on these all weekend. He managed to get the trunnion pockets milled into the barrels and threaded. I need the trunnions to be removable for shipping. Here are the pictures.

The mill has a table that is 25" X 60"

    6-pack_014.jpg

Here is an action shot. Using a 1/2" carbide endmill to get through that stainless.

    6-pack_015.jpg

Here is the finished pocket. We had to move the trunnions so the barrels wouldn't point at the ground all the time.

    6-pack_016.jpg

The CNC is kind of like a "Bull in a China store" when it comes to threading. Better to do this by hand.

    6-pack_017.jpg

  21. Damn Sweet!!! a six pack ye say.....what would an entire case run???:rolleyes::rolleyes:

    :ph34r: Ahhhhhhh., At Least 4 Times What a Six-Pack costs Kind Sir ! :ph34r::D
