  1. A lot of information about pipes has been uncovered in the Plunder forum Pipes Link. The following is from Tobacco Timeline 1564 or 1565: ENGLAND: Tobacco is introduced into England by Sir John Hawkins and/or his crew. Tobacco is used cheifly by sailors, including those employed by Sir Francis Drake, until the 1580s. (Chroniclers of the day took little note of the customs of sailors. Crews under the command of less famous captains than Hawkins would be given even less notice. But Spanish and Portuguese sailors spread the practice around the world--probably first to fellow sailors at port cities. There is no reason to suppose Hawkins' crew particularly advanced in comparison to those on other English ships. In sum, there could well have been a small underground of seafaring tobacco users in England for decades before officialdom took notice. Hawkins and his crew are usually given the credit, but in reality, take this with a grain of sea-salt.)
  2. 'ope yer feelin' better soon Black Jack. I suggest ya 'ave some 'ot toddies, and plenty of 'em. Might not 'elp, but certainly couldn't 'urt.
  3. Two words a man ought never to 'ear together. Makes me shudder, it does. Imagine if you were the lucky bloke who got to use said medical device on ol' Cap'n Teach hisself! Not as job I'd be relishin'.

  7. You're not going to believe how piratical it has become. I'd say one out of every three costumed attendees was in pirate garb, and that is on a regular weekend! On Pirate Weekend the whole flippin' place went piratey! There's some links to Pirate Weekend at their website... PA Ren Faire Pirate Weekend... but it doesn't do the weekend justice!

  9. From Turner South's website: Blackbeard, Delta Blues, Blackbeard's Ghost Blackbeard was known as the original "intimidator" and "a master of pyschological warfare." His face made him famous, emblazoned with flames on the bow of his ship, "The Queen Anne's Revenge." His reputation was that of a vicious killer, but was he? Get the inside story on this legendary pirate's infamous life, tyrannical piracy, and brutal murder. Then, the Liars & Legends crew heads to Mississippi to speak with musical veterans on the past, present, and future life of the Delta Blues, including getting the truth about Robert Johnson. Though he lives and breathes in the souls of a new generation of Delta blues kings and queens, his talent may not have been a natural gift. They say he sold his soul to the devil so he could master the guitar. Finally, head back to Ocracoke, North Carolina where hopefuls still seek Blackbeard's ghost. Rumor has it he still haunts the waters where he was murdered searching for his severed head...and revenge.

  13. The Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire is extremely Pirate friendly. Their 2003 season reflected this most notably with a Pirate Weekend and with sea shanties taking a larger role in their Finale In Song. I picked up both the 2003 and 2002 CDs at the Faire this summer, and cannot stop playing them. They are fantastic! The PA Ren Faire is now offering them for sale for $15 each, and they're well worth it. You can see the information here: PA Ren Faire and you can order them by calling (717) 665-7021, ext. 129, or by stopping by the Carriage House Wine Shop at the Mt. Hope Winery, in Manheim, PA. Outside of Miami there is a little attraction called Monkey Jungle (where humans are caged and monkeys run wild) that I've always had an affection for. Not piratical, but a lovely monkey experience run by a nice bunch of folks. Monkey Jungle Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
