  1. and I figured I'd drop back to this ancient haunt of mine to ask if there was any lore I needed to know about where a tattoo ought to be placed?

    Anyone else who might know?

my opinion there- a tattooshould just be porportionate to the area where its placed.a small tattoo on a small part (writs, ankle),larger tattoos on larger areas (calf, upper arm) and it should be the right shape a tattoo on the forarm should be taller than it is wide, on the upper back usually wider than tall, etc. thats how i (and most professionals) would explain it. the rest is totally up to you

  2. thanks so much for the input.it helps alot.i have always been into fantasy but am just now starting to get into the authentic. i am gonna finish this coat because i am happy with it so far,but i think i will buy that better pattern for future projects (im always working on something).

    ;)

  3. i found these pics online and im thinking of making some (with a modern shoe as a base). im just wondering if anyone knows what years these shoes seem to be from.they just say 17th cent and 18th.thanks for any imput

  4. I think Patrick was sayin', that the poor might not hav the fancy cloth but the workmanship was still very good. After all, it was often the poor folk wot' sewed the clothin' fer the wealthy.

very true. i didnt quite think of that

  5. Poor people sewed thier clothing with fine stitches also..... it had to last....

i guess what i mean is just smaller or larger stitches.ive hand sewed things with large stitches that hold up just as well as small stitches, just with topstitching it would look different. i admit i dont know half as much about the historical stuff as alot of you guys tho.

  6. Thanks Bonie!

I am wondering how much flack I'll catch for it being on my forearm. All my other tattos are t-shirt and jeans coverable. I figure at the least my mom and dad will flip... but that's why i moved out and bought my own house now isn't it?

your body is the one thing that will always be fully yours, so you have to do what you wish with it. i have 27 tattoos,7 peircings and 1/2 inch guages in my ears, sometimes my hair is pink- who cares what anyone thinks.

  7. Hmmm I would beg to differ... and since I argue with everyone else here, what the heck... There is a very good book out Historical Fashion in Detail The 17th and 18th centuries, by Avril Hart and Susan North... you'd be surprised how fine some of the stitches truly are.. and all pictured are original garments...

but im sure not every garment was made with the exact same care. fancier ,more expensive clothes probably had finer stitching than very plain peasanty clothes.thats how it is today even

  8. Actually the cut on the front of the coat is not too bad really... Not sure about the neck edging... looks a bit too smooth for what I have seen in patterns from actual garments... any chance on a picture of the back since the pleats were what really made the coats so interesting.. its that..."swish" thing when yer fencing...   ;)

Also is the coat lined?  Hangs a little... um... limp... waistcoat looks fine, except I prefer the longer ones...

could you give me more info on the neck? id loveany inp ut on making it better.

it isnt lined yet,and it is kinda stiff fabric, but i had to take the pic myself with the timer,in a very small room.lol.ill get better pics when its done.

heres the back.it has alot of pleating- a nice side gusset and back gusset.its made using that POTC simplicity pattern.

  9. Also I would like to try and a machine stitch that could simulate a hand sewn one. Now that would be cool.

    Thanks

the closest i get by machine is just using the largest stitch.hand-sewing that is done neatly would resemble that.

my black coat is entirely hand sticthed-even the lining, and the red one is moslty hand stitched.

  10. Blackbonie, the lads are right, don't lop off yer head luv. Yer more attractive than the rest o' us, an we include our mugs in our pics.

The jacket needs buttons (I'm sure ye know this), an I'd say the pants says Hollywood or at least Sunset Strip (The Roxy); but it all says, Pirate!

lol. the pants are just my normal everyday pants-so hollywood is ok

as for the coat, shirt and vest im going for mostly an authentic look but not right down to the stitch detail. do they look too hollywood? cause im using actual historic pics as resources.

  11. AMEN BROTHER!!!

I TOO TRY TO TAKE SOME SHORTCUTS BUT I ALSO TRY TO EXPLORE OUTSIDE THE CONFINES OF STRICTLY ENGLISH FASHION OF THE PERIOD ....SAILORS WERE TRAVELERS WE WOULD HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO MORE THAN JUST ENGLISH TRENDS OF THE DAY

yes thanks.i too beleive that having some stuff french, some indian, etc, would be perfectly plausable.i even like to explore a broader time frame- since pirates have existed as long as boats have.(i know this forum isnt about them tho)

i dont think im well liked here for some reason tho because when i post pics i get no response.lol

  12. heres some stuff im working on.its my second coat ive made,3rd shirt and first vest, but not the last of any.lol.theyre not done but i plan to post pics as soon as they are.any constructive criticism?

  13. The evil deamond sitting on my shoulder said I have to say this.....

Disneyland is not a musiem... it is an intertainement park.....

they have to change to keep up with the times.....

    (luckly Pyrates will never change.........)

true. disneyland/world have always changed with the times to stay up to date.i have only been a few times but i know of many things that changed in the 3 year period i was regularly going.it aways will change.it would be dull if it didnt.

  14. If anyone is interested, you can get a free copy of this Spring 2007 Pirates Magazine, at Pirates of the Treasure Coast.

where is that? i never even knew there was a pirates magazine :P

(when i clicked on"quote" i accidentally clicked on "report".any way to undo that?)

  15. well coming from a professional tattoo artist i can tell you that tattoos had meanings at one time, but now nautical stars, etc, seem to mean "my buddy just got them and they look cool".especially nautical stars.i must do about 10 of them a week

  16. lol.i always wondered about the quaker oat guy.

i work about 60 hours a week but i love my job so i dont complain. tattooing is a great job.i also draw portraits professionally.i dont make much but its better than hating my job.
