  1. Amazing. Of course there were lots of mid-wives for birthin' babies, I know. But I didn't realize that folk medicine was still so prevelent.

Thanks for the lesson, matey. I be learnin' new stuff everyday on this board.

  2. You maties be a wealth o'information.

Thank'ee fer you offer, Red Maria; I'll be sendin' ye an e-mail fer a copy o' that document. And here I thought a woman wouldn't be accepted as a doctor in that day and age. (But we all know there were medicine women fer many hundreds of years in tribal cultures.)

WARNING: If ye be squeemish, don't be readin' the next paragraph!

Talkin' about leeches reminded me o'an article I read where they were trying leeches as a means to administer medicines. Seems leeches create a secretion what keeps the wound open sos they can keep suckin'. By injectin' the leeches with certain chemicals, the secretion can be chemically changed. Fascinatin'!

  3. Aye, Carrie! They be a fine fleet o'shops!

(Actually they appeal to my bleeding-heart liberal side that likes to see people treated fairly; they even offer health insurance and other benefits to part-time workers. A company that walks the walk and talks the talk.)

  4. Geoffrey Rush got an Oscar and he's a character actor. Ben Kingsley is a charecter actor and he won an Oscar. Being a character actor doesn't hinder your chances. I've seen many a pretty boy not get one.

However furniture chewing can sometimes get you an Oscar!:ph34r:

Aye, true that be Red Maria. True it be.

Although Ben Kingsley be gettin' the Oscar just fer bein' BEN KINGSLEY.

But don't get me wrong, Mr. Kingsley be a wonderful actor. But my understandin' is that Mr. Penn's performance be quite outstandin' - and he also be a hard-workin' actor.

And I be glad that Bess's assessment of Mr. Murry be matchin' what I be thinkin' he be like. Unfortunately, like sports figures, some actors don't ken that there be little ones what looks up t'them.

  5. Mr. Depp be too well known as Tim Burton's boy and that ain't gonna help his chances - despite the terriffic performance. He's been a fantastic character actor for over 20 years, but the Academy don't usually give Best Actor Oscars to character actors.

Politics, mateys; that's what drives the Academy. Sean Penn will win.

  6. I like cowboys.

Bless ye, Bess, fer treatin' them actors like the rest o'us. They be doin' a job tis all. I don't go fer all the adulation that most o'them don't deserve.

The British have it correct, they don't put their actors on pedestools like us Yanks. If then does a good job, then they gets Knighted by the Queen. :(

  7. John Ryes-Davies were also in Wing Commander.

Actually, the only game I ever played were one by LucasArts called "Full Throttle"; a futuristic motorcycle gang. Much fun it were.

However, seein' as I have cabin boys about me I get to see a lot o'the new games without havin' t'play 'em. Kingdom Hearts be a fantastical one; can't wait fer the sequel.

Well Redd, if there be anything I kin help with via phone/e-mail/fax/CD you've but t'ask.

  8. I've never heard Alan Dean Foster say that "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" was intended to be a movie. If you're familiar with EU (Expanded Universe) then you know how closely the Lucas company keeps tabs on the writers and the books so that they don't interfere with the movie scripts.

Hmmm, most post this on me other board t'see what my "experts" think. Yer most welcome t'join us at http://www.sandiegostarwars.com/discuss/index.php

(Just don't talk to David Brin about Star Wars; I was verbally accosted by him at a convention. It took every ounce of willpower to keep from comparing how well his book-turned-film did at the box office  )

Alright, I've blown my cover. I be a geek. And I get extra points fer bein' a female geek!

  9. Interestin' call fer "female" captain and crew, Redd. D'you think them gamers are gonna want t'play from a female point of view?

But, then again, Tomb Raider be a BIG hit wif the 18-24 year olds.

Be this demo like a "Wing Commander" wif live action?

I be sorry I can't help out; I've done many a training video shoot with all the same elements (lighting/sets/"actors"). Course my ships were F-14s and Apache helicopters.

  10. Everyone remembers how George Lucas got caught flat-footed without a sequel script when the original Star Wars turned out to be the most successful movie in history. In fact, he was making preparations for a low-budget sequel in case the movie only broke even.

Sorry mate, but you be spinning a yarn with that story.

George Lucas had the entire story written/outlined in the late 60s but realized it was too big for one movie. When he wanted to get the first movie funded, he chose the middle part because it was the most exciting. The story is all there, he just adds/changes details for each film.

This is very well documented, plus I've heard it directly from sources close to Mr. Lucas.

I also heard-tell that Disney executives wanted Mr. Depp to "tone down" his performance because they didn't like it. It were Mr. Bruckheimer wot made them back off - and a good thing too. :)

  11. I already have, lass. The site be bookmarked fer easy reference.

I be gettin' me letter t'the board members ready t'send. Figure I'll give 'em a shot across the bow t'get their attention.

Roy Disney leavin' the board be the best thing he coulda done t'bring attention t'the sad shape the house o'mouse be in.

  12. Well... if this strike goes into effect there will be even lass.

It was really dreadful last time we laid off hundreds of people. :(

Hmmm, another cost-cutting measure planned by Michael Eisner?

Can't wait fer me stockholder voting packet; I'm gonna make 'im walk the plank! :(

  13. That's why they're striking - because producers don't care about writers. Can you name the writers of your favorite TV show/movie? Probably not, unless the stars are also the writers.

That's also why there is nothing to watch on TV.

  14. I could never find ostrich feathers on e-Bay when I was makin' a "feather sword" fer me youngest cabin boy. But maybe there are more now.

I'll definitely check out these sites. Thanks fer askin', Isabella.

  15. I was thinking about doing that too; although being female would automatically make it non-historical.

I had the opportunity to tour the ship from the movie "Master and Commander" and one of the displays was of the doctor's cabin. He had many of his medicines in vials in a pouch, for easy transport I suppose.

I also did a few searches for medicine in the 18th century to see what the knowledge was at the time.

  16. Redd, I be a far piece south o'ye but I can draw a quill across parchment with the best o'them. I been scriptin' and storyboardin' since the 1980s.

Sos if yer willin' t'give this Captain a chance, I'd love t'help ye with yer demo. Course the gamers 'round here think anyone over 25 cain't do this kind o'work - and me havin' me degree in interactive media. Hmph.

  17. All the Wiggles fans can check out their web site at http://www.thewiggles.com.au/index2.html

Paul Paddick who plays the Captain is a trained classical singer and has quite an impressive show-biz background. But he also is a great comedic talent as Captain Feathersword.

And actually Anthony married a lady from Mexico last May and they are expecting their first child any day now. Also I think Paul married the lady dancer that played Priate Jolly on the show, but I haven't been on the message board in a few months.

Yes I have a Wiggles fan in my house too, besides me. I'm very impressed by these guys considering three of the four are early childhood education teachers and are very family oriented in their personal lives. They've been doing this since 1991 in their native Australia!

  18. Aye Black Deacon! And here I thought I was the only one what knew the Pirate Song.

I want to sing and dance

I want to sing and dance

I want to be a pirate

    Like the Pirates of Penzance

Congrats, Capt Slappy; break yer peg leg out there, I wishes I could sees it. Although I did sees the one wif Kevin Kline back in the 80s. The water fight with the orchestra were funny!

    I am the Pirate King

    I am the Pirate King

And it is, it is a glorious thing

    To be the Pirate King!
