Captain Pogue

Yeah, I found that picture of the french dragoons after reading Cpt. Sterling's post about Villers' (sp) marines. I'm really not looking to use them for a pirate but definitely GAoP period. Now I'm kinda wondering about material and color. I'm leaning towards hardened leather. My prefernce on the color would be black. Similar to a black belly box. Any thoughts on that? Would that be way off or would buff be more period for hardened leather? Thanks for all your input Pogue

It is a bit frustrating. From what I've seen and read, second source only mind ye, they only really pop up during or after F&I just like Capt. Bo stated. But it is hard to believe they weren't common as an alternative to boots, especially during a period where boots were necessarily in fashion. Especially for the rich and fancy to wear while hunting, gotta look good doing it. I also read that they really matured technologically during F&I in ways to improve protecting the leg and how they cover the foot. From what I've been reading and seeing gaiters came into prominence during the F&I war. Were they around during GAoP? If so, in what fashion? Any help would be great, especially from those that maybe did some F&I re-enacting. Thanks, Pogue

The slop contract mentioned a leather cap. Don't know if it's a leather monmouth or something else... What about a Phrygian(Liberty Cap), they've been around a long time but their due to their meaning would they be "used" by the british?

Just keep an eye on the DVD Format war. The industry still doesn't know if it'll be Blue Ray or HD. I wish they'd make up their minds already...

Alright, I'm gonna mention PotC AWE in twill. But it is only as reference... Boot Strap wears a cap that doesn't look knit, but can't be certain if it is leather. Has anybody seen anything like it for the GAoP? Thanks

Second go around watching it. I was hoping for more. After what they did for LOTR and some of the comments you had made about Norrington, I was really hoping they would pack it with more piratey goodness. Still love the movie! I really don't like the fact that there is an extended Anatomy of a scene: Maelstrom on the blue-ray edition... Still running on the old format until they decide what format to use... Kinda off note, it's hard to watch Norrington and take him seriously after watching the show Coupling on BBC America. He use to have that stuck air about him, just can't get past his comic antics in Coupling.

Yeah, not really interested in anything knit... I read somewhere about leather caps and I was hoping someone had come accross something new I could use... Obviously the pic of the red cap at the beginning went down a bad road and turned into some sort hat o' provisions...

Kenneth, Which hat blanks do you get from Jas Townsend? The normal size or larger size ones? I've been experimenting with an old cowboy hat and I haven't been able to stretch the brim out, any tricks to it?

It looked like they took everything from the period and threw it in, regardless of whether it had a place in GAoP or not. I thought Dogg's sword was accurate. It's a dussage I believe... But I love the shot of the pirates raising the anchor, they are pushing the capstan and around comes a pirate wearing thigh high riding boots. Not just boots that roll up over the knees but the kind that flare out. That seemed a bit much...

Kenneth, Awesome pics of you and Chris. The vest looks great. I'd love to see some more pics of the vest in color, not hidden by pistols What pattern and kind of fabric did you use? GoF, Thanks for the site, those are along the lines of what I'm looking for. I figure when it comes to baldrics and some belts, it's ok to go big and fun. My Lady, I agree. I've been keeping an eye out at clothing stores. I fell funny hanging around the belt section in the women's department... Men just don't have big fashion belts. My wife keep talking about how somebody could probably make some money by casting belt buckles of various size that look 17th-18th century. I'm keeping a weathered eye out. I would appreciate it if you let me know if anything comes to your attention. Thanks all for your help.

I applaud your attempt. Jas-Towsend has a boarding ax (head-only) for $24. He doesn't have any handles that fit it. In case the metal grinding gets too time consuming. Sometimes it's better to spend the money than the time, my philosophy. Good luck!

Bo, love the look. The pike looks good. Whenever I hear "Hollywood Pirate" it sounds like "wannabe" so I kinda take it negatively. It's like street cred, we see it in everything. If your poor or middle-class nouvea-riche sounds pretty cool, unless you come from old money. Rhinestone cowboy (I think that is the right term) someone dressing like a cowboy that hasn't even touched a cow or horse, always seemed kinda laughable. But I still put on my cowboy hat and went dancing. I just rationalized it was part of my culture living in the country, I wasn't trying to say I'm a cowboy. But I had the hat. I think it's the same way with pirates. I still look at the people at the faire's with purple and black tights, leather vests with a skull and cross bones on the back, leather cavalier hat, pouchs that rival a horde of marsupials, and enough cups hanging from their belts to bail out a small sloop with a big hole with a bit of humor. Can't do that with my wife's outfit though or mine, but stand me next to Patrick or Bo and I start looking like Han Solo with a hat. I've often wondered how other people deal with this, but I do place myself in hirearchies. At work, with friends, and doing pirate stuff. Well, I'm not as good at whatever than this person, but I'm better at something than this person. Those are my thoughts when someone who hand sews their outfits from sources that were only created in the GAoP throw out the term "Hollywood Pirate." I don't think many "Hollywood Pirates" use the term unless a historically accurate pirate is involved. It's just being a Pirate. That's the burden I've got to bear, instead of just worrying about me.
