  1. But he does know how to find recipes in Maxxim. I've been through my last 10 issues (over and over again) and haven't found a single recipe. And yet, he insists they are there. :) -- Hurricane I was a subscirber for about 3 years... My live in girlfriend of the time enjoyed the mag more than I did in all honesty (this was about 10 years ago)... In the 3 or 4 years I was a subscriber, I think I saw all of 5 or 6 recipes printed in the magazine... 3 of them happen to be recipes I LOVE, which is why I kept that issue and tossed the rest of them out.
  2. Yep, it was a term used throughout the 17th century... It has been used to indicate any lock type that wasn't a "match lock"... So it was used to refer to Snaphaunces, Doglocks, English Locks, "true" flintlocks, etc. etc.... I've not seen the term "firelock" used in reference to wheel locks, but that doesn't mean it wasn't used as such.... There is a LOT I don't know.
  3. Quite the opposite... Although again this is going from heresy, I believe the Navy's were almost a full century or more behind in standardizing themselves.
  4. I still think solar showers are the cheapest of the various suggested options... At $15 each (from the source in that link) plus whatever you can find to build around it for privacy, it can't be beat... And I believe Sterling mentioned a place that may have them for cheaper. I guess this is where you start to run into how much of a budget do you have for the event? Are you charging for the event, in which case you can tack an additional $1 onto your admission price to defray the cost of the showers... Or perhaps there are other financial options. Personally, if an event was seemingly good enough, and I knew I was going, and showers were not going to be available, I know I would spend the handful of bucks on one of those for my own sanity (well, mostly the wife's sanity) . And I would likely be nice enough to allow a few friend use of it, specially those who helped maintain it and assisted in lugging the water to keep it full. Showering probably shouldn't be that big of a concern for your hypothetical event, a steady source of water (both drinking water, and water than can be used for cleaning) is a bigger concern. As for run off water, having been to a few Pennsics in August in PA, where every camp has dish water and many camps also use the solar showers or similar set-ups, soapy water is not much of a worry, or nothing a shallow pit for the run-off water to go into, the soil will naturally take care of filtration... If the theory can work for 10 to 14 THOUSAND people within a campground in PA, I'm sure it can work for a few hundred in VA. Digging the pit for run-off water has become an almost annual chore for me at the Pennsics I attend, and since the camp I stay with there is up around the 50 people mark, we dig a pit about 5 to 6 feet deep, and about 5 by 7 feet around. Usually a few of us shift work it in tandem and it takes no more than an hour or two.
  5. Hey Montery Jack, sorry to be so slow in getting back to you... But I have honestly been looking for those links, and completely unable to find the information... That said, a lot of my bookmarks on the topic no longer work, so I think the information I was going to try and send you has been removed from the source pages.... Which is a real bummer. However... Being an old hat at this interweb stuff and used to all the good stuff disappearing when it is most inconvenient for it to do so... I have most of the information stored on my computer. There is too much to email to you or post here (they are .jpg images of the original scanned books), so i fyou are still interested, please PM me with your address, and I can burn the info to a CD Rom for you and mail that to you id you so please. Pm me to work out details. If anyone else is similarly interested, I am more than happy to work something out as well. Cheers
  6. Here's a neat little tidbit... The below quote is from the "The accomplisht cook or, The art & mystery of cookery" by Robert May which is a 1685 text on cooking. So for those die hard GAoP purists, this is a period mead recipe as printed over 300 years ago.
  7. Okay updated info, and some clarifications from the previous post. First off, hotels. Handy list of Hotels near our apartment curtesy of the wife Closest Hotel to the Ship I just did a "test" reservation and the cheapest rooms here seem to be in the $110 to $150 per night range (based on single or double occupancy) Second off, food. It is preferred that everyone contribute to the food situation, which will take some coordination. Those coming from further away obviously have good reasons to not be able to help out much on this issue, but those coming from shorter distances, if you could contribute a bag of apples, or oranges, or a loaf or two of bread, or some cheese, or whatever fits your budget, it would be most appreciated! Bringing cold drinks would be a good help as well. We usually have unlimited drinking water, but iced tea, or lemonade or other beverages do help make a long few days more pleasant. Please post to the general discussion thread about food, it it becomes too difficult to wade through to find the food information, I may break food info off into it's own discussion topic.
  8. Hey D.Man, rather than retype the answers Look Here as someone asked that same question a few weeks back.... I don't think you are gonna like the answer though....
  9. Make a cheap plastic frame work, drape some canvas for privacy, and use Solar Showers, as long as it is in a warm time of year they work okay... And the shower portion is only $15, I'm guessing once you add in plastic plumbing frame and some draped canvas, you could have a portable shower for less than $50 that you could use over and over again....
  10. Not an easy question.... As far as I have been able to figure, standard (in as much as standards exist in this period) started to appear with greater frequency as the 17th century wore on. I haven't done any real reading on the English Civil War, but I had thought that the ECW was when uniformed soldiers first started to appear.... But I could be wrong on that, I know John Churchill First Duke of Marlborough was one of the biggest driving forces for standardizing the English Armies of the period, a lot of the conventions he put into place wound up defining warfare well through the 18th century.
  11. A 'real' expert or a self proclaimed one? One of those self proclaimed know it alls Well come on then, this isTwill... Cite sources... web links to comments actually made? Book references if said person is an author who makes this claim? Would like to avoid faulty sources if I can, but I do need to who or what they are in order to do so.
  12. If you have ever seen the movie "Braveheart" starring Mel Gibson, the blue crud they have smeared all over their faces before the big battles is supposed to be woad.... Just to add a pop culture reference to Mission's ratehr good explanation.
  13. This is precisely why Hurricane will NOT be attending this event.... Actually, while the tour does tend to try to gloss over the less flattering elements of Columbus' actions (which seem to be many), they are also committed to NOT distributing false historic information and will actually candidly answer any questions about Columbus and his deeds.. Although because there are usually children on the tours, the answers may be toned down to a PG or even (F) level depending on the audience for the particular tour.
  14. Please just let me know if I have missed anything or if any additional details are needed... It's very easy to lose sight of the event from an outsider's point of view being so immersed in the arrangements. I'm trying to include all the info I would want to know about an event before participating, but my priorities are not the same as other re-enactors, as there will be re-enactors of a few different styles present... Which is really good for the event as a whole (IMO).
  15. Actually mid-way between our place and the ship is kind of not the best neighbourhood... In fact most of the areas betwen us and the ship (as the crow flys) are not good areas, or industrial areas. I'll keep that route and a reasonable neighborhood in mind while I search for places for you. Thanks for the suggestion Sterling! Seperate thread created and impoprtant details are there. I can add or alter as need be.
  16. When - May 9th and 10th - from 11:00 AM until 6:00 PM When to arrive? Sarturday morning is of course ideal, but those who need to arrive Friday evening/night due to longer travel times, flights etc. will have any and all arrangements possible to help. Our apartment (although it will be a very busy place) is open to guests who wish to stay, as long as cat allergies are not a concern. When to leave, Sunday after close is ideal, but I very much suspect those with longer travel times may cut out early. Free parking can be had at City Hall, which is up a small hill and across the street. Because of the limit of parking, car pooling is prefered as much as possible. For example those who can meet at our place, leave additional vehicles at our place (which has almost unlimited parking) and car pool into down town would be helping the situation greatly. Like most city down town cores, parking in downtown Columbus can be challenging. We are working on additional parking options, but nothing is set in stone there yet. Map quest to follow. Pack light. Whatever clothing and weapons you need, and whatever you need to demo (if you so choose to). This is a ship, space is limited, so bringing tons of superfluous stuff should be avoided as much as possible. You will need whatever bedding/blankets/pillows you desire to sleep on. Those not staying in a hotel or taking advantage of our hospitality (at our apartment) will be sleeping on a hard wood deck. Air matresses are okay, but personal sized ones are preferred as double or queen sized air mattresses for individuals will likely eat the deck space up too quickly. Hammocks can be used, but there is limited places to tie one down, and already two or three coming (that I am aware of) so I would prefer to discourage excessive use of them. Powder. There will be battles at 2:00 PM (give or take) on Saturday and Sunday. The battles will likely go in the 20 to 30 minute range (including manuevering the small boats), so I would guess that an average re-enactor would use about a dozen shots in that time. Of course those with quicker trigger fingers (or slower ones) may go through more or less powder. I will be buying some extra powder to share liberally. So if you don't bring your own, you will be taken care of, but those who do bring thier own will be greatly appreciated. Those wishing to do shooting demonstrations throughout the day will be allowed to do so, and should adjust their estimated powder usage accordingly. Please message me or post to the more general discussion thread about the event about your powder usage so I can ensure we have enough. Food. We will cook breakfast and dinner on Saturday, and breakfast on Sunday. We had various fruits, cheeses, breads etc. out to munch on throughout the day. If there is a great demand for a formal lunch, it is something we can look into. Again, please post concerns or ideas on the event general discussion thread. Demonstrations will be very loose. If you haev something you want to demonstate, please do so, if not, you can interact with the crowds or be quiet "set dressing" as per your own whim and disposition. The ship runs tours that focus on the history of the ship and Columbus, we are there to add to that, but mostly in a comparison as to what was being done a few hundred years later, and by a very different styled group of sailors. Those who wish their demos to be inserted into the guided tours, try to keep your spiels to 5 mins(ish), but spectators do hang out on the ships after their tours and ask more in depth questions about what facets interest them the most. We can set up demo areas off the ship (as long as they are close to the ship) if people think such an arrangement would work for their particular demo. Again please share ideas and discussions on the main event discussion thread. I will be locking this thread down and updating it as needed. Please share any questions on the main discussion thread, or if appropriate via Private Message.
  17. Well as for hotels... If economy is the order of the day, the place you stayed last time was the closest and cheapest... I will endeavor to look up some closer hotels this evening (probably with wife's help as she knows the city better), but I am certain that the price will raise in direct correlation to the proximity of the ship. So I think the question here is, how much are you willing to pay? PM me with the answer if you do not care to broadcast personal finance stuff. I'm happy you're going to make it! Mark G will be thrilled as well, his usually almost unreadable face looked almost disapointed when we talked to him yesterday and mentioned that you wouldn't be coming. Linda (the director of the ship) was also saddenned by the loss, so this sudden change will come as very good news to many. Speaking of the ship, this coming weekend she will be undergoing the up-rigging for the season, I have decided to loan my massive manliness (insert laughs and jokes here) to the task, mostly so I can learn about rigging and ship set up from a practical doing it kind of way. As for Friday, you would be most welcome to come and hang out, there will be a few others in town, and likely staying with us, so it will be fun! I'm sure Becky will enjoy being the centre of attention as we gussy her up for the occassion.
  18. I've talked to you about this over the phone Mission, and you know my mind on the matter.... You will be sorely missed, but as much as we want you here with us, you'd be a fool not to jump on that other opportunity! On the bright side, there are a few potential "suprise" guests that MIGHT make it to help us console ourselves.
  19. Ooops, accidentally double submitted my reply... Sorry
  20. Standards? In the mid to late 17th century? You'll only give yourself a headache ... There were SOME commonalities... But standards... Nuh-nuh... From "Colonial Frontier Guns" by T.M. Hamilton. Pg. 41 There are various other references in the book, all state that 18 calibre was the most common, but examples have been found from 16 to 22 calibre. Keep in mind that I believe this author is using the term "calibre" as an equivalent to "Gauge" or "Bore", so this would be about .597" to .663" range with the most common of 18 calibre being .639". Out of all the various books I have collected over the last few years, the above book has the most examples of the French Buccanier muskets, and best technical details, but the downside is that out of all the books on muskets I have, this book also has the smallest variety of muskets in general, focusing in on a handful of different styles rather than the catalogue of variety that the Nuemann book contains. There is also this old thread about the "Fusil Buccanier (Buccaneer musket)" from the Captain's Twill section, if I recall correctly, the thread had some awesome information in it and good debates.
  21. Perhaps I am being unimaginitive, but I tend to think of lemon flavouring when I think huffy (associative with sour)... But lemon flavouring and coffee sounds vile, at the very least...
  22. The coconut cream came out well... I think the only thing we could have done to make any difference is to squeeze the coconut out through some sort of straining cloth (and I don't think it was neccessary for taste, more for texture) and perhaps an extra hour or two of soak time... Although as you said, the flavour was there, and visually the liquid was close to store bought coconut cream (just a little more transluscent). What I want to do more experimentation with is cooking quantities in a camp fire environment. And that sort of experimentation requires campfires and events. So do you think you will still have coconuts on the tree for Hampton? Maybe I'll ask Dutch if he'll talk to Cookie about my contributing the same rice dish to one of the meals there?
  23. If you look at This Discussion Thread, you will see a rice and coconut recipe that I tried at the last event I was at. Below is the important quote UI based this off of (well that and a mif of a modern recipe) We processed the coconut as per these directions, and it worked. The rice dice however did not turn out as good as I hoped because it took soooo much longer to cook than I expected, and I tried cooking too much rice for the size pot I had. It was edible, and tasted good, just a bit more "al dente" than I would have liked it to be... Well that and someone mentioned it could have used some pepper... And I agree. I am going to try the recipe again with the lessons learned from my recent experience. Good luck and if you come up with any recipes that you find are particularly good, please share your experiences!
  24. This thread will be to cover the items being sold in and discussions about the "Dead Man's Chest" auction to be held to raise money to help keep the Santa Maria replica on the Scioto River in downtown Columbus Ohio afloat. First a few details. After a fair bit of discussion within the Scioto Pirates, and plenty of idea brain storming, we decided to best way for us to do the auction was via eBay. Doing the auction through eBay will allow both participants AND those who are not able to make it able to bid on items at their own discretion. As eBay allows auction length only up to two weeks, the "Official" auctions will be set up two weeks before the event and from there bidding can begin. We will be posting items and spreading awareness of the auction on this forum (mostly on this forum) and other forums as well to help build exceitment and awareness. Computer access for those participants attending the event will be available, so that the participants in the event can keep up with any bids they may choose to make. Pictures and descriptions of Auction items will be put up on this forum as the items are received (please contact me via email or private message to send a donated item for the auction). Any and all reasonable items will be accepted for the auction, although pirate or nautical themed items are prefered (be they Historical/Authentic or Mythical/Hollywood/Renn inspired). As the auction will be done through eBay, all of the rules that apply to eBay apply, including the fact that shipping may or may not be included. Details on shipping will be added into the eBay auction details, so there should be no suprises there. More later.
  25. Yep, Diosa has it... I remember the 3 year rule from my following the various PiP/Mercury threads on the year I didn't make it. I seem to also recall it as "more of a guideline than a rule" (said in my absolute worst Jack Sparrow voice). PiP in my opinion should always remain a pirate festival, containing all of Piracy's and Pyracy's most mythical/hollywood/renn inspired madness and authentic historical together. Say, I've never heard of that rule vis-a-vis garb. Who made it? (You'll have a fine time explaining this to the Bone Islanders. ) Imagine it, though. You can wear skulls on everything. (I do so love skulls - it's what first drew me to piracy when I was a lad.) You can tie a big fancy pirate sash around your waist. Not to mention the already mentioned bucket boots. And you can wear black with impunity! (I'm a winter. That apparently means I look good in black. Plus it's slimming according to Vague magazine.) Hey Mission... that 3 year thing I believe was on here... for the Mercury Crewe....not for PIP as a whole. Conveniently, we will have Port Royal over by the beach side this year and we are not 100% PC so if you can figure out how to walk within 10 feet from me and not run away, you have safe harbor there, bucket boots and all We also have period games going all day, so you are welcome to come gamble your piratey guys out....We had a good time with that this past year and the year before... get a couple of people in and others crowd around to watch and learn. It's been a lot of fun. Just watch out for Youngblood, the kid... he's a swindler.... Diosa
