  1. To continue on in the spirit of my last post this -> "anti gun nuts", is easy to perceive as the opposite end of the spectrum in the manner of those who act and talk like "every act of regulation is a step to "THEM" taking my guns away" paranoia is just as harmful. So lets all try and be a little respectful of the fact that this forum in all likelyhood holds people who believe in either end of the spectrum, and all the various shades of grey in between and try to avoid name calling and negative stereotyping. Just my 2 cents.
  2. Rev Sam, it's good to hear your still alive and doing okay! Good luck with all the hubbub around the graduation though!
  3. Damn, I'm jealous.... Of the slops on your other thread as well... Freaking incredible stuff man!
  4. Uh...no. It is impossible to actually produce cat-rabbit hybrids as they are genetically incompatible despite their similar number of chromosomes. Additionally, cats and rabbits have different habits. Female cats are induced to ovulate by the tomcat's barbed penis, which scratches the female's vagina as he withdraws. Male rabbits have smooth penises and are not able to cause a female cat to ovulate. Thus, even when copulation takes place, there would be no egg to fertilize. Cabbits - What are they? Cabbit - Wikipedia Awww... Now you ruined my fun... From the same source cited, while there is no REAL cabbits, there are occassional rare cats with genetic mutations that have rabbit like characteristics.. But from what I know this cabbit genetic mutation is tons more rare than even albinoism. As for reproduction, two animals do not have to mate for a hybrid to come about, genetic splicing has come a very long way.... Muahahahaha... Okay, so the cabbit is pretty darn near impopssible...
  5. Mae, I don't wish to add fuel to your nightmares.. But I actually vaguely recall seeing that creature on a science show back in the early 90s... I think it actually exists.
  6. ECW = English Civil War SYW = Seven Years War (also known as the "French & Indian War" in the colonies which is often abreviated to F&IW) And since the question was raised, I will take it a step further and cover a few other common ones... AWI = American War of Independence also known as Rev-War = American Revolution CW or ACW = Civil War or American Civil War Queen Anne's War is known as the "War of Spanish Succession" in Great Britain and Europe War of the Grand Alliance is also referred to as "King William's War" (mostly on this continent though). I think that covers the most common ones I see used.
  7. As usual the iPod is on random, and right now I am being treated to XTC "Sense Working Overtime"
  8. I include both the Buccaneers and Pirate era into GAoP, but that is mostly because I re-enact both eras and I know the public tends to (albeit slightly erroneaously) draw paralels between the two. In that same breath, when talking about the era, I will try to educate whoever is patient enough to listen to me on the differences between the Buccaneers and Pirates.
  9. Firearm Owners Identification card....F.O.I.D. have to have one in Illinios to buy or sell or posses a firearm or ammo....but blackpowder weapons dont have to be registered here in Michigan, no card....just a permit if its concealed...try that with me fishtail!!?!?!.....otherwise if an antiguw or repro blackpowder...no register last time went to Canaidia....as long as it was a (historical) sword or blackpowder weapon....they didnt consider them a real wepon...just couldnt cross with the black powder tho interestingly enough they do consider a Katana a real wepaon...to many problems i suppose as long as all weapons are locked and checked....i have yet had any issues....lots of looks....no issues......i have a TSA approved gun box....long enough fer me longgun.....the box itsaelf is 40lbs...dont take much before i am over the 50lbs limit....and my swords are usaully in a big duffle bag....as long as the handlers cant be stabbed...the pass muster Thanks for answering that for me M.A. d'Dogge! Not to take this discussion too far off topic (and a moderator may please feel free to move this if they feel it appropriate), but one strange not to well known law in Canada that is applied very un-levelly (I know it is not a word). Knives over a certain length (I think it is 12 inches) are illegal to carry while swords are perfectly legal. I had a custom made sabre confiscated at customs because that particular customs official decided to perceive my single edged sabre as a long bladed knife rather than a sword. This was a very expensive lesson for me to learn, I strongly suggest anyone travelling over that border use extreme cautioin when it comes to long single edged bladed weapons.
  10. I was wondering what an "FOID" card was... Ohio is also a state that does not require the registration of flintlock weapons... at least that I know of.
  11. Actually Bo, Not to start a fight or thumb my nose at your concerns... But one thing that should be noted about ALL THREE of the sources you cited, the term "BLOG" can be found. Blogs are personal commentaries, diaries, or non-official editorials, and not officially recognized news sources. The first of the three sources you cited also mentions "President Bush". To me that speaks volumes about how out of date that particular source is and any validity that source holds gets flushed with it's current status. Another point, ALL THREE stories are focusing on Concealed Permit holders in airports, not those who stow their weapons in sealed luggage for transport. Lastly, the TSA is not (if my information is correct) a branch of the government but a private standards organization. One of the articles mentions asking "President Bush" should lean on the TSA, meaning the government has no official capacity to intervene, but only the ability to apply political pressure to encourage the TSA to make one decision or another, and that the TSA will make whatever decision it will make based on its own agenda.. They may consider government pressure, they may not... Fear mongering? yeah, I think so.... The BLOGS are about people carrying pistols in airports on themerit of Concealed Carry permits, and have nothing to do with Gun law, or the safe transport of properly contained weapons.
  12. Another accomodation option has been pointed out by Callenish... KOA Campground at Buckeye Lake, which is about a 45 minute drive east of Columbus just off route 70. Web Page describing details on the "2 for 1" deal They will have tent sites available for resonable prices, and cabins available as well. This is a reasonable and cheap option for those willing to drive he extra time.
  13. After a long discussion, Lob has gracefully accepted the role. His agent will be in contact to discuss wages in the near future... It sounds like Lob has gotten all high brow on us...
  14. Buckeye Lake is about a 35 to 45 minute drive (pending traffic and the lead footedness of the driver) from Downtown, but that is really not a bad price. We live about half way between Buckeye Lake and downtown. Thanks for mentioning that Callenish, that is another good option for those considering coming!
  15. That's right Bo! I remember a really good discussion over on the Frontier Folk.net forum regarding this some time ago (in the Nouvelle France section)... If memory serves me well there were citations posted about the use of wooden shoes and things I generally know as "pattens" which are wooden bottomed footwear with leather uppers (sometimes straps, sometimes almost mule like appearance)... Again going from memory, most of the references in that discussion were from Quebec and from the second half of the 17th century. As a note, Smoke and Fire Company carry wooden shoes for $28 to $30 (depending on size).
  16. We received our trading cards yesterday (or was it Friday?).. Regardless, we have them and love them all! No to shut up before I say something that spoil it for others...
  17. In my research on soldiers of the GAoP, I have found a few references to (English) soldiers wearing them because they hadn't been supplied with leather shoes from England in such a long time. From a report recorded on April 20, 1717 http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=74005 The tone of the reference in my opinion made it seem that it was a great hardship for the soldiers to be wearing wooden shoes rather than leather ones. So I would guess that wooden shoes were something only generally worn by the poorest of the poor....
  18. You know, you'd probably really appreciate Cadillacs and Dinosaurs. It's very reminiscent of the better EC comics from the 50s. I'll bring you down the first one if you promise to take good care of it. (The stupid things have gotten pretty expensive on eBay.) Oh trust me, I was (and hung out with) a number of comic geeks as a teenager... Okay even into my twenties... Fine I still am... I know how to handle and read comics without doing anything to jeopardize their value, intrinsic or sentimental... And thank you, I would love to read those. A friend of mine strongly reccomended them years ago, but it was just another of those things that slipped my mind. That was there from the very moment I put the new avatar up! But notice that my superhero counterpart is rich enough to use the name brand stuff unlike the no-name crud I use in real life...
  19. Damn, I thought this one was the brain-like villian from the Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles....
  20. Hey Joe, I'm not sure if it was universal or not, but the quotes I was referring to in my previous post are based on shots per pound. Judging from various other excerpts from the book I am citing it seems at least the French measured bore size of their muskets in shots per pound (or whatever the French equivalent was, this was well before metric). It is also important to note that the French weight measure was a slightly different measure than the English "Pound". I'm not sure if they were different by whole ounces, or off by a fraction of an ounce. I guess this is something I can and should look up. In re-reading the title and description of the topic, I realized that Animal was not JUST asking about the French Fusil Buccanier musket, but muskets in general of the period.... So to add to that more broad question, one must also realize that the French mostly used muskets in the .62 to .69 range, but the English and Dutch preferred larger bore weapons that I believe generally ranged in the .69 to .80 range... Again just as there was a "common" range for French muskets with LOTS of exceptions, there would be similar variation in English and Dutch weapons. I haven't done any reading on Spanish weapons, so who knows what the trends were like for the Spaniards?
  21. Okay, the first few items for the auction have been photographed... The items of jewelry are being generously donated by Diosa (Goddess In The Bodice). Although I haven't photographed it alone, there will also be my last leather costrel in black. Click on the link to see a bunch of costrels, you should be able to determine which one is black. Mark has said something about donating a compass for the auction. I would imagine it will be a period (or close to period) reproduction in brass. Bo has supplied the chest, which he has already posted pics of (on the main discussion thread). I may repost the picture of the actual chest here if I get ambitious. Bo has also pledged 50 buttons as per the sort that Mary Diamond deal in which can be viewed in the first post of this thread and perhaps a piece of his metal working if time allows. Wife has hinted at something, but she can speak for herself once she decides. Pretty darn good start to the chest. Thanks to all contributors! Hoping more will surface..
  22. Bo, trust me... As I am driving all the way down. I would LOVE to take the trailer/poles with me... But unfortunately, I do not have a trailer hitch nor the motivation to add one to my vehicle... I've been keeping silent on the matter because of the lack of trailer hitch, not the lack of interest or willingness to help. Cheers
  23. Coongrats to both of you... Awesome job... Now PLEASE pull my wife out of Belly Dance retirement... Pretty please!!!! Mission, are you on some sort of body painting kick lately? First you in woad as Doctor Manhattan? Then Brig in green?
  24. Hurricane, I'm sure Diosa would heartily agree with you buying up all the back issues you can... From "Soldiers In King Philip's War" by George Madison Bodge, originally published in 1906... This citation is apparently from the Massachusetts archives, but printed on pages 612-613 of the above mentioned book. Bolded section emphasized by me. E J Blackley and Sons in the UK seem to be the only ones selling the locks premade.... Okay, the Rifle Shoppe does sell them as well if you have the patience to wait the 18 to 24 month waiting period I hear is average for their products (which most say are well worth the wait).
