August 7th, 8th & 9th, 2009: Pirates of Paynetown
michaelsbagley replied to Black Syren's topic in August
That would be great Rats! I hope you can make it! Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help get you there! -
Yes you should have married her! But that is an awesome and amusing little tale... And just entertaining enough to make me seriously consider taking your suggestion of letting her ride with us! How easily does the gibbet disassemble should we consider this more seriosuly? (with the wife's approval)...

Just to beef the numbers up.... I am going to throw a few more names out there.. These are the people that may (or may not) be coming with us... So if you want to add fairly tentative people, add them to the roster, if not, leave them off until we have a firmer word about wether they are coming or not.... I'm guessing the Mercury Crew would be the most appropriate for them. Trish Gallatin Shannon Gallain Nick Strojny Ashley Strojny There are a few more names I think may come with us, travel sperately, or perhaps may not go, but I think it is too early to speak for them.
-
Kate and I will be driving down... Not sure how many of the others that may or may not be coming with us will go (either car pooling or flying)... Let me re-phrase this.. I am driving, the wife is seriously pushing for her flying with me manning the ground crew.

Actually, if you go up to the upper right hand side of the list of threads... You will see a drop down menu for "Options", if you click on that and select "Standard View" it will change you back. My computer got That setting is saved on your computer, not the forum... some time ago my system got knocked off kilter like that... I forget who it was that explained it to me (BlackJohn?), but it changed right back when I did that. Hope this helps.

Hey Johnny, Are you looking for instructions on a particular items or set of items? There are lots of great tutorials in the archives written by Kass and others (the best in my opinion are the ones where many different people voiced their ideas and opinions). Like this one started by Patrick Hand on Slops is awesome.... Or this one on hand stitching in general which can be helpful to some. This Link will take you to Kass's blog site on making a shirt for the period. And there is more info on that topic In this thread and in this thread I know I missed some of the bigger stuff (waistcoat, outer coat etc.) but I thought this would be good to get you started.

Okay, from what I have read (mostly see Torsten Link's "Flintlocks a History") the "True" flintlock (or French Lock) came into existence in the 1620s (+/- depending on who you ask) although they were uncommon and did not become the dominant weapon until much later in the 17th century (how does one pin a date to a transition?). Several factors, but mostly price and effort of production kept the transition slow and gradual and the (much cheaper to mass produce) matchlock as the cominant weapon throughout most of the 17th century. I guess my choice of words was poor, as there were earlier "true" flintlocks, it just seems that the fusil bucanier was one of the first more "production" true flintlocks (hopefully being clearer here). I think there are textual references to the "fusil bucanier" going back to at least the 1680s, although I think there are earlier references to "bucanier" muskets out there, if I were to guess going from memory, I think finding references back to the 1660s is possible.
-
Hey Cuisto, There is a great thread somewhere in Twill from a few years back that focusses just on the Fusil Buccanier (although with the creation of the "Lock, Stock, and Barrel" section it might have been moved there). But the short answer to your question is that the "french lock" (as it was referred to back then) was the earliest "true" flintlock with the internal half cok rather than the english "dog" catch safety. Most of the surviving fusil buccanier that I have seen pictures of in various books seem to be from the 1700 to 1730 era, and have flat faced, banana shaped locks. I'm not sure if there are any easily obtainable published sources for images or pictures of the fusil buccannier of the late 17th century, so I have been going with the hopes that the more easily found early 18th century surviving pieces are similar (or hopefully even the same) as theearlier pieces. Found it.... Link to the old thread on the topic And a link to a more recent discussion where the buccanier was discussed.

That would be Cutter from the Blackbeard's Crew (and Pern floating around in the background, don't recognize the lass though), and from the arrangement of tents, I would guess that it might be the Hampton Blackbeard Pirate festival.. Perhaps last years? Edit - Scrap that, those buildings look like the historic houses at Beaufort where we were camped last year.

Ooops... My appologies LookingGlass! Thanks for clearing that up Dutch, I knew rum cake lady went as Hatchet Meg, but so many people here post as names different from what they use, so I just wasn't sure. Regardless, glad to hear that things are going well with Luna!
-
I've got some doubloons coming your way from the sale of my books, Dutch. Maybe enough for a second case of screws! Is "LookingGlass" the author of the Rum Cake book? (and presumably the maker oif the freaking awesome rum cakes as well?) I loved those rum cakes soooo much I bought the book.... Now if I can only work up the courage to try and make one of those...

Yep, I'll be at St. Marys Citie 375th anniversary this weekend, and at the LockHouse at Havre de Grace next month. I know you mentioned you might try to get to one or the other, hope to run into you out that way! Cheers

Funny thing about this... Back when I was a Viking re-enactor and mocking the pirates I encountered, one of the quips I used to toss at the pirates was that they were the Vikings that showed up 1000 years too late and way too far south... Now I tell Vikings that they are the extinct pirates that never got it right.... (which is why they are extinct )

Reggie, I liked both outfits I saw you in... Like Callenish said, the little details and add-ons come with time. I don't know how long you have been at this, but from what I saw, in my opinion you are at the leading side of the curve. Keep it up.

This thread will be locked. I will update this with important or notable information regarding this event as the information becomes available. So far... Pirate re-enactors will be taking over the Santa Maria in downtown Columbus Ohio for the weekend. We will have access to the ship starting at about 6:00 PM Friday night, through Sunday at about 5:00 PM (perhaps 6:00 PM). Accommodations All participants in this event are welcome to "camp" on the ship Friday and/or Saturday nights at your leisure. Space is fairly limited, so smaller more compact sleeping arrangements are preferred (please avoid using extra large or "King" size air mattresses). Privacy is pretty much non-existent on board the ship, so if you plan to "camp" out, please do so with that thought in mind. I will post some local alternative accommodations for those so inclined, but the short version is, close (walking distance) hotels tend to be in the over $100 range, hotels in the $50+ range are available at about the 15 to 20 minute drive range, family camp grounds for as little as the $20 range (+/-) can be found in the 30 to 45 minute drive range. As for camping in the area... Alton RV Park - This one is likely the closest to the ship, but only for RVs. This park is on the same major street that passes by the ship (Broad Street), but from the look of the map it would be about a half hour drive west of where the ship is in the middle of the city. Jackson Lake Park - Is about three or four miles from where we live (it is about a 20 to 25 minute drive to the ship from where we live). It is hard to tell from the web site, but it looks like this place offers both RV and tent camping. KOA Buckeye Lake - Buckeye lake is about a 45 minute drive east of where the ship is at. It might be the cheapest of the options, and likely the closest to the freeway, but the longest drive of the close options. Food Food can be cooked on the ship, but cooking space is limited and tight, so it is preferred that we pool cooking resources. If everyone could contribute to the food and/or drink that would be preferred. Someone will start a discussion about food organization closer to the date of the event so we can sort that out then. Last time things worked out well. Events The best place for the latest information on events for this weekend will be the event web site found At this web link location. The ship will be open to spectators between 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM (subject to change). There will be battle re-enactments both Saturday and Sunday, we have aimed to do these early in the afternoon (around 2:00 PM)), and have pulled it off in a reasonably timely fashion in the past. We're not strict on timing, but we do our best.We are also brainstorming to come up with other additional ideas for this weekend, if anyone is interested in perhaps adding more of Friday to the event, please contact me so I can direct some of our resources to trying to come up with ideas for that as well. Living History displays (presentation style or in character at your whim) can be done throughout the day on Saturday Or Sunday. Safety and Visibility concerns There will be no smoking on board the ship. It is preferred that if you smoke you try to keep it out of sight from the public, but as there is limited out of space locations, no one will bust your chops over this. Absolutely no adult beverage consumption during public hours. After hours it is okay, but a modicum of discretion is asked for (be subtle not paranoid). No drinks off the ship. If you have to drink and smoke at the same time, you can stand on the metal gangplank, but please try to leave a safe path across at all times. Auction We will be having another auction of goods to help raise funds for the ship, last time the increased attendance of spectators the pirates generated and the moneys raised from the auction were about on par with each other, so this two pronged approach has worked and is great. Please contact me about donating items to the auction. More to come! Suggestions or ideas are most welcome, please post your thoughts to the ongoing discussion of this event topic/thread.

His hat? But how can you be sure it would be HIS hat? I think Mission may be onto something with the stripey breeches... But who would want to go near those things?
-
One serious flaw in stealing Stynky's mug... I don't think he actually owns one. It would be a case of liberating a mug he himself has stolen... I think the same could be said for whatever hat resides upon his pate at the moment as well... And belt too by the look of it... Does Stynky actually have anything of his own that we can take and play a prank with?

CJ, how goes it? Welcome to the pub! Glad to have you hear! See you next this weekend if I don't post much for the rest of the week!

A couple of things happening at Port Washington
michaelsbagley replied to ThomasBlackthorne's topic in June
I can't speak to the weather in Wisconsin, but in Ohio (still in the mid-west), later in the Summer and Aumtunm is usually worse for tornadoes, not better.... Perhaps just a shift of a week one way or the other might suit the festival better? But my experience in suggesting date shifts on events is that the levels of beaurocracy, and the other paralell events behind the scenes of these events more often than not make a date change impossible or so much of an uphill battle as to be not worth the effort... Sad but true.... -
Belly Box that goes around neck
michaelsbagley replied to Ivan Henry aka Moose's topic in Crafting Kit
On a documentation oriented note... I recently picked up a copy of "Small Arms of the British Forces in america 1664 - 1815" by: De Witt Bailey pH.d., and there is a page on cartridge carrying methods for the 1680 to 1700 era, in that time they found documentation of 10 sorts of cartridge carrying boxes/pouches... There is specific mention of carrying a cartouche/cartridge box on belts (more frequent) and mention of a cartrdige box on a should strap (I think only one or two mentions)... But from a more practical experience standpoint, I have found affixing my shot box to my belt so comfortable, I have never even bothered trying to think of setting it up on a shoulder harness (diagonal or front-wise). -
August 7th, 8th & 9th, 2009: Pirates of Paynetown
michaelsbagley replied to Black Syren's topic in August
The Scioto Pirate will be there in full force... Capt. Mark G and wife will be bringing their boat, wife and I will be there, Dan, and Thomas (or so I hear) will be there, perhaps some others as well... I've been in fairly regular contact with Nathan over this one, and it sounds as if this year the event has grown yet again! I'm pretty stoked about finally getting a chance to check this event out for myself. -
Welll Dutch... I'm gonna back Sterling in the stopping of you from the reckless course of action... But since you brought up Batteau, I found This Quote some time ago in some colonial archives, which document the use of Batteaus to our period (the quote is from 1711)...

Okay, I'm convinced on the "Blackball"... But does anyone have a similar suggestion for tan, brown or natural leather shoes?

Bump... Okay, here is the latest skinny on the September edition of this event... We will have the ship for the whole weekend (with a few interuptions), so those who care to show up early, can show up on friday and have a place to stay for free (as long as you are willing to "camp" on the ship. Although we will not have access to the ship until after 9:30 PM on Friday. I am considering booking that Friday off (and perhaps the Thursday as well) to help with last minute arrangements and try to entertain anyone showing up very early (I have some ideas on cool things to do, but I have to flesh out the ideas first). The ball (which is not definite yet, but looking VERY likely) will be Saturday evening. The ship is booked for a private function Saturday evening, so the ball would be a perfect diversion for the few hours we need to clear off the ship for. I am also considering other options for those who may not wish to attend the ball to keep them amused. At this point I am guessing, but I htink we will need to be off and away from the ship between 7:00 PM and 10:00 PM (+/- an hour at the begnning and/or end). We're hoping the second boat (the ship's small boat) will be repaired by this time so we can use it. So this time we may actually have two small boats to attack the ship from (we expected that last time, but that was before the ship's small boat was damaged just prior to the event). We are having another "Charity Auction" for this event, it will run the same as last time (more or less). If anyone has anything they would like to donate, please contact me. Again pirate or nautical themed items would be prefered, but anything will help and be most appreciated. Judging from the responses I have recieved, this event is likely to be as well attended as the last one, and perhaps better attended, as we will be marketing this one a bit heavier, as unless we are able to make a serious impact, it very well might be the last (although we hope not!). This event again is very open, historic clothing is preferred, but all shapes and styles of pirates are welcome to help. Any ideas on activities or suggestions on how to make this event bigger and better and more fun would be most welcome! So again, this event is for the ENTIRE WEEKEND of September 19 and 20 (including the evening of the 18th) which coincides with Talk Like a Pirate Day.

I really love this picture of Edward...
