  1. I thought someone posted directions or a link for the directions to these buttons but I can't seem to find it. Can someone assist me? About half-way down This Page P.S. I will be moving this thread to the Sewing Room area, as it fits more there as it really is more about how to make them than a discussion on provenance. Hope no one minds.
  2. Not a good point of reference.... But years ago, when I was still living in Canada, the Home Depots there had their canvas drop sheets listed as 100% cotton... They had some cheaper, synthetic ones as well. But I do distinctly recall seeing some cotton ones, no more than 5 years ago,,,
  3. Hey Hawkins, one thing of note... The re-enactors are almost all down on the beach (and may all be on the beach this year), the vendors are all inside the fort (both historical focussed and fun focussed). Not sure if that matters to you or not, but you did mention in your post about the vendors near the camps, and thought it might be worth pointing out to you that it is not the case. Wait, Re-enactorFest east was cancelled? That's too bad, while I wasn't going to go, I do know a fair amount of folks that will be put out because of that.
  4. I think you are talking about Elmira, Ontario. It is about a one hour drive outside of Toronto. Nice place for a day trip from Toronto, used to go out for an afternoon at least every couple of years....
  5. This is the link I think you are looking for Patrick... It is the "getting Tentage Ready for PiP" thread.... It is 18 pages long, there is a lot of banter in the thread... But tons more awesome information! Tartan Jack, that tent has held up to some pretty stiff rain... Nothing as hard as I have gotten recently in my wedge (which has held up better than hoped for!), but that "Half Tetra" shelter of mine is a lot better than what the quote on page 32 of that PDF file states. Now take into consideration, I used top notch canvas (a fustion 50/50 cotton linen blend), and I took the extra time to shrink the fabric, twice, as well as hand sewed the seams (remember, I had the time I was not working).... and some of the things I had the extra time to do may have factored into how well it has help up... But it is still a great and simple shelter with a bit of privacy. Miine is 13' X 13' (15' X 15' of fabric, minus shrinkage and minus seam allowances) and it sleeps two, perhaps a bit less space than is ideal, but livable. Another thing one should do if considering this design, is run an internal line from point "A" to point "E" to point "D" for extra support on the canvas, otherwise it tends to sag pretty badly and wastes a lot of space. You will alos lose a great deal of space at the "back" edge because the canvas is so close to the graound from the slope to be almost useless for the last couple of feet.
  6. This link was posted here (I think) years ago (by Patrich hand?)... It is a lengthy web page with dozens of different setups for simple square or rectangle tarp style shelters. This Link is for a PDF file version of the above link web page if you prefer PDF documents to web pages, I've had best luck in the past with the "Half Tetra"
  7. My fly shelter is done with hand sewn eyelets... Mind you I did it last summer during a span when I couldn't work and had nothing else to do... I'm not sure if it is just my technique sucks, but I have yet to set a metal grommet that has not popped off on me.
  8. Yep, those large spikes work great! But a lot of people add washers to them to give them a bit more hold. Even though the head on those spikes are a good size, the canvas can still slip off, a good sized washer fixes that problem entirely.
  9. Awww Rats... If you are really that broken up about a lack of sidekick for Paynetown.. I can pretend to try and fill in. I may not be big and fuuzzy, but I do tend to smell after a day at an event... And if you feed me sea food stew, I smell worse than the dawg! On a more serious note, I will have my early 1700s Red Coat gear at Paynetown, and at least two spare coats to use as loaners, possibly a third... But the third depends on if it's ownder deciding to be there filling it or not.
  10. Please Invite Carleton too! He was a great kid to get to know at Hampton, he was really thrilled at being the steersman on one of the outings on the Firefly, and he is a very cool and enthusiastic young re-enactor. The Santa Maria's hour are hard to pin down these days as they keep getting reduced from additional budget cuts... They are open some week days.... From their web site (www.santamaria.org)
  11. Well.... The site "officially" opens on Friday, but if you contact Nathan, he would have the answeres as to whether it is okay to show up early and how much early one can show up. Also you should check out the Pirates in Paynetwon Web Site... One link of particular improtance is the Registration Form I don't want to tread on any toes here, but if none of the other Archangels are gonna show, you're more than welcome to camp with the Scioto Pirates for that weekend. We'll have 6 or more of us there, and "Firefly" (what I believe Mark has settled on naming his boat).
  12. Like that will work, Stynky will re-arrange all the hats on everyone so we will all be confused..
  13. Nice MadL! I especially like the tooling on the leather belt, that is some great work! Cool choice of images with the Hammerheads!
  14. I checked through the posted photos, and This one and This One are the only two photos of Becky I could find... I am thinking the pink camera photos never made it online... I am having Jessica double check her computer, but the memory chip from the camera is blank except for a few pics from Blackbeards and some fireworks photos from ? (perhaps Blackbeards).. and she found the pictures just as I was typing this, so we will get them uploaded and post the link soon.
  15. As of this very second I do have the entire week off... But the wife could not get a single day off that week... So I am fairly determined to cancel the vacation time and save it for another occassion... So we are stuck going home for a break of a few days before heading out again. So we will be at Pike River Friday evening, all day Saturday and Sunday until the afternoon, and then we will have to leave... Our Paynetown times will likely be similar, but because it is only a 3 1/2 hour drive, we will not arrive as late, and will be able to stay longer Sunday. That would be great Rats! I hope you can make it! Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help get you there!
  16. And he has the gall to call me a loquacious board noise maker... But I do so love that picture of you Mission! You really do take great period photos when we can get you into frame!
  17. I'm sure Kate would appreciate it!
  18. No, the set of Jumps that I am picturing in my head looked different than that one... So I guess this is me saying that my shakey and unrelaiable memory recalls a set of jumps other than the ones you posted above. I was almost certain it was Sterling that showed me the image, but perhaps it was someone else? Or perhaps it was via private message as I just looked through the thread over on the Tavern, and the image was not there either. Fair enough of the usage and appearance of them in period art and extent samples... Truth be told, Kate has been thiking hard about an easy to throw on garment for runs to rest rooms in at events, and while we have been leaning more towards the idea of a banyan stye bed coat, jumps could serve just as well, so the topic does really interest me. I'll keep on trying to recall where and when and who the other image I recall is from.
  19. Until just under a year ago, I was a big sceptic on "jumps", but then Sterling posetd a picture of a set of jumps (or maybe two) that had firm provenence in the GAoP (albeit both in the later half if memory serves me well)... And that pretty much convinced me. I think Sterling posted a textual reference or two on the matter as well, but my memory on that point is far more vague. I still believe they were a minority item (likely), or will until I see a fair bit more evidence on their frequency (or lack thereof). I think the posts for that may have been over on the "Tavern" forum... I'll give it a day or two to allow Sterling to repost them here, and if the good captain is too busy, maybe I will go cut and paste the posts to share here as well. (unless someone else gets impatient and does it first )
  20. Uhm "pirate celebrity"? ... yeah, i would have a very hard time of thinking of myself as anything close to that... Maybe prolific event attender, but celebrity? Tartan Jack, I have an extra pistol I can loan to you (it's a hand canon though, see above picture), or I am certain that one of the Brethren would be more than happy to loan you a boom stick. Mission, if you are interested in heading out East to Le Lockhouse, I'd more than happily carpool with you, I'm sure the wife would support that plan as well! I had actually met CJ once before, but it's been almost a year since I have seen him, so it was almost as exciting as meeting him again for the first time. But secret handshake... Man, how did I miss that!?!?!
  21. yeah, but that is cool... No one is ever excited to see me.... (Wait, I wonder if that is supposed to be a hint? ) It just means we're all that much more excited to see you the few times a year you can make it out!
  22. You met Blackjohn before I did?! The world just isn't fair... Yeah but you forget, I am like the "Where's Waldo" of the pirate re-enactment world... I'm there in a picture at every event, you just need to look hard enough to see me.... It's a lot of hard work, but someone has to do it.
  23. Yeah, those early English Horse Pistols are freaking huge! And now I have two of them... Thanks for the compliment on the gear though, we were standing in a row of probably over 50 armed men for that shot... Probably the largest firing line I have ever stood in!
  24. Yep! Sorry about the delays.... But the cards are sent! You should all have your cards by the end of this week or earlier give or take the postal services whims of randomness.
  25. BlackJohn and I t St. Mary's City this past weekend... I think it is one of the few photos of me with my doglock, I seem to wind up using my pistol more often for some reason.
