  1. Hi Korisios, Unfortunately, I don't know anything about Spanish uniforms of the period, I have mostly just focused on English, but I have learned a fair bit about French uniforms as well, but nothing on Spanish. Your second question about what officers uniforms, is not as simple as that. In my research on English uniforms, low level officer uniforms would have been issued (Sarjents, Ensigns, etc.) in better quality wool than a soldiers coat. But for higher up officers such as Lieutenants or Captains, they would most likely have had their uniforms tailored out of better fabrics, and in the same colours as the unit, but with more trim, braids, and perhaps some brocade on the waistcoats, but not likely the outer coats.
  2. I might just buy the below depicted one (the larger one in that design) because I like it so much (and my current one is too small and really not very period looking). Thanks for posting those Callenish! Now the web site doesn't list the volume of that coffee pot, but a similarly sized one holds just under a gallon, which while less than the super cool, way huge one that Callenish has (3 gallons), should be enough for the smaller gathering of pirate that are going to be at Fort Des Chartres, shouldn't it?
  3. Uhm, I have one.... .. But it is small..... ... Liek really small... .... Like it would only make enough for three or four good size mugs of coffee.... .... I don't know if anyone coming has the Callenish size coffee pot or not, but I hope so!
  4. Lots of difference. I have mostly been focusing on the 1700 to 1720 era uniforms, but I even see differences between those uniforms and the 1680s and 1690s ones. The changes are more dramatic (to me) once you get into the 1730s and 1740s. One thing that I think is very obvious in the differences is the folded back lapels. The length of the coats, and the way they are draped changes quite a lot as well. Compare the below two pictures... The first is of me and Matt in our Queen Anne War era uniforms (please excuse the colour of mine, it is off and too burgandy), the second is a sketch of a Revolution War era uniform I was able to find on google. Pretty big differences if you ask me.
  5. How about this, if Linda is unable to (because of available ship funds, or city committee red tape, or whatever), I will look into either... A. Seeing how much it will cost to have it done, and if not unreasonable, pay for it out of my own pocket as a contribution to the event. or B. Look into renting a second porta-potty strictly for re-enactor use. Renting an extra potty is just over $100 (probably about $115 +/-) which is within my means. This will of course depend on any city restrictions regarding the matter. Fair enough?
  6. Okay, just wanted to give a shout out to see who is still thinking of coming? I've been putting together a list for organizational sake (which I will not post )... So far from the Pyracy Pub I have the following people considering coming. The locals Mark G Jennie G michaelsbagley Kate_Souris ProfessorDeath (and his little Pew, not to be confused with the Pew from the pub) Ben Fidley From further out Rats Callenish Gunner Salty Pots Diosa (pending the circumstances we spoke about at Searles Raid). Silas Thatcher Connie Thatcher An as yet unknown amount of Thatcherlings, and perhaps an otter as well Mission DaveyDogCrusher M.A.d'Dogge Cheeky Sterling Gentleman Scotty (and his Kate) Tartan_Jack Are there names that should be added or removed from the above list (I've added all the names of those who posted interest in this discussion topic)? While I won't divulge all the names on the list, I will say that there is just under 50 potentials, which considering the usual 30% to 40% attrition rate, should leave us at the usual 30 to 35 participants.
  7. Hang on guys, please don't bail, as it makes it harder for the rest of us. Between the last two posts, and a private message I received yesterday, would everyone agree to stay in if we pushed the deadline back to the end of next week? That should give all time to recoup from whatever adventures we've been on recently, and get their cards done. Agreed?
  8. i would think that one lesson won't make me a competent sword fighter... neither would anyone on the other end of the sword !! safety is stressed and i think others would want alot more practise from me !! Well you've got the correct attitude on the matter, safety is first... But I think you seriously underestimate how much training can be crammed into a weekend. Now with everything else that goes on that weekend, there is no way to do an intensive program, but I am sure we can get you well on the road. And if we teach you and one of your older sons, you'll have your own in-house training partner.
  9. Someone posted the below images over on Frontier Folk. I've seen the Watteau (1717 French Soldiers, Infantry?) image come up before (at least a few times), but the 1725 French Marine Bombardier is the first time I have noticed it. I find it incredibly humourous that the French Bombardier image looks almost exactly what my researches on the British Independent Company of Foote Guards would look like. (give or take a few details, like shot box style, and colour of socks). Better yet, I have most of the accessories to switch the British Infantry portrayal into the French Marine Bombardier.
  10. I'm almost completed my queue of projects for other folks... And then it is all stuff for me and the wife for the summer. Including a couple of nice added touches to the pirate gear for this one (well for the Santa Maria event the month before, but Fort Des Chartres will see the new touches as well). Silas, we can run through some basics of stage sword play at the Santa Maria, maybe if we are lucky M.A.d'Dogge will be there as well so we can try to keep the psuedo-standard going to make it easier for the various crews to work together. I know what he does is very similar to how I was trained, I think the difference is mostly in the order of the basic moves (well that and I am more used to close-in fighting, and they go the safer fighting at a distance route).
  11. PM sent, please PM me for my address as you finish the cards. I should respond quickly.
  12. I had considered going to this, but real life got in the way... However, I have followed the event (mostly through Facebook) and now that the results are in I am happy. There were no less than three GAoP groups that placed. See list of winners here There were three major categories for contests, with each category divided into three general time-frame sub-categories. But the GAoP was very well represented! The Sea Rats Atlantic, won third place in the "Best Uniform/Clothing Impression" category! The Archangel Crew won first place in the best camp cooking category. And the "York Privateers" won third place in the "Best Encampment (material culture and Interpretation)" category. Congrats to all the winners, and specially those who through winning have brought GAoP re-enacting that little bit more into the mainstream.
  13. I took a hunt for it, but I couldn't find it... But I seem to recall seeing some art that validates the existence and use of straw hats in the period (and in the near years around it as well). If memory serves me well, none of the images of straw hats were of a cocked design (tricorns), but I am going from memory here.... At least until I find that old discussion. Maybe I am looking on the incorrect forum... I really hate my sometimes selective memory.
  14. Those links won't work for those who are not members of those Yahoo groups... But Lee's article can be found on this web site (his web site?).
  15. Can you post a picture of the tomahawk here? I remember looking at it in St. Augustine, but my memory is hazy... And I might be interested... Price as well if you will!
  16. Bring some to the Santa Maria, I can't think of any need for rope right now, but once I see it I am sure I will become inspired. Maybe bring a bunch of extras too, as there are fair amount of people coming that are not on this forum that might be interested.
  17. "And in case our raid of the city doesn't succeed.... We will shame them by TPing their houses!"
  18. Love this shot! Great capture of a muzzle blast!
  19. The picture is of Art, he and his wife Janet run the sutlery (the smaller of the two present at Searle's). As much as I see them (about a handfull of times a year) I don't remember the name of their sutlery... And I am fairly certain they do not have a web site. Jeff's wife is Melissa.
  20. Thanks for that clarification Mark! One further question about this, I know at least one person who has not come in the past due to the need for a CPAP (device for sleep apnea). With the use of the "Boat house", will we be better able to accommodate this? This could help immensely! I know there is electricity on the ship, but I have always been unaware of if and where there are any electric outlets. Perhaps this has been a big oversight on my part in the past.
  21. Hey Mark, I have "un-locked" that topic so it can be updated. If anything gets posted there that doesn't fit, I can move the post to this thread (or a more appropriate place). Let me know if you need anything else.
  22. I've bought my last few hat blanks from Ursula's Alcove, while she does not have them listed on her web site, she usually does carry them. If she doesn't have your preferred size or colour in stock, she can usually get them in a reasonable amount of time (an extra week or two). Below are a few sources I managed to find scrolling through some older topics in the Thief's Market area of the pub... Not sure if the links are good or not, but it should give you a few places to start. A source for Hat Blanks is Lady MacSnoods There is also this place, pricier, but they claim to be "fur felt" rather than wool Center Stage Costuming Probably the best price I have seen... Scroll about 2/3s of the way down the screen... Blockade Runner And a few more I was able to find.... Hats by Leko Their wool felt blank page The Moutnain Top Trading Company
  23. Awesome! Yay Brig!!! Don't sweat the theme too much, think of it as more of a guideline... At worst we are one person short for this round, although I think if we recruit hard over the next week we can find another artist or creative person to press-gang!
  24. Well, they still didn't say "No", but they did say it would be very unlikely that they will make it for May... But on the bright side, they said that they were planning on coming back for the September "Talk Like a Pirate" weekend event. I also made a few updates on the "Just the Facts" topic here on the thread... I'll be adding more to that and the web site in the coming weeks.
  25. Yes, we are still a go... Everyone should make ten cards, and if we can't find two more folks to sign on in time, I'm sure I can find something to do with the extras... But if we can recruit hard over the next week or two to find another couple of participants, that would be ideal.
