  1. Psssssssssssssst. Psssssssst. Pssssssssssssssssssssssst Psssssssst. Dratted athlete's foot!
  2. How about a row or two of belaying pins in the cap rail over those balusters? (and some line, belayed and coiled, of course.)
  3. He said ship's bell, Rumba...not ship's belle.
  4. Just wondering how much of an abomination my tricorn is, that's all. I was guessing that it was easier to make flat felt than shaped felt, and piecing it is comparatively simpler (based on the evidence that I managed it, whereas I couldn't possibly block a crown myself.) Any road, thanks for the education.
  5. Thanks, GoF. In your picture, I see at least one that is clearly flat-topped, and several that suggest it. No idea whether those are pieced or blocked, but at least it shows that the cylindrical crown was in use. If I had to hazard a guess, I would think piecing would be a way to produce a cheaper hat. In any case, nearly all the seams are hidden once the brim is cocked.
  6. "Immoral Porpoise"...? "The Marlin Spiked"...?
  7. Charity, it be when he sever someone's head... ... with a tennis racquet. Cap'n Ciaran, methinks the word you are looking for is "lopping." (Hey, I even ended the sentence with it!)
  8. Arr. Fuzzy be fer da hare. You deserve better optics. Lass, you give a whole new meaning to "Easter Peeps", that bein', what I keeps stealin'at yer fyne pictures!
  9. Question along the same lines: were the crowns ever pieced and sewn as cylinders, or only blocked as domes? (or for that matter, blocked as cylinders?)
  10. You know, Capt Siren, when the worthy who wrote "Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle o' Rum" penned the immortal line "All lookouts clapped on Paradise," I don't think this is quite what he had in mind. ...but it sure seems to fit. :)
  11. Erm...because I have a thing for comical photos? Admittedly, the expression is mostly lost in the avatar size. This gives the idea a little better: Still, I thank ye for the kind words, tho' it means a bit more from the likes of the fair lasses who preceded ye, Mr. Gunner. I must say, you've a fine sense of pyratical panache there yerself.
  12. And the blindingly white! Most likely not so by the end of the weekend! I think that's the camera flash (and maybe white balance function) doing that. The material is actually quite ivory. Still, a good coat of various species of ship's filth will do wonders. The one other thing I'd mention in hindsight is to learn your sewing machine. (assuming you aren't handstitching). I had no idea mine did overlock stitch until this morning. Doh! (I looked at the seams on a pair of Dockers and they finish the seams pretty much the way I ended up doing. Not period, but at least I have some confidence the seams will hold up now.)
  13. They say if you can't be a great example, you will have to serve as a horrible warning. So, in the interest of public service, my new slops: As to that horrible warning... THINGS I HAVE LEARNED ABOUT CANVAS: 1) Canvas shrinks, when washed, (roughly on par with Levi's 501 denim, 1 inch in the waist, 2 inches in the inseam.) I made these straight off the bolt,. After washing, they are shorter and narrower in the leg than I would like. Bottom line: Wash (i.e., preshrink) your fabric before starting. 2) Canvas ravels like crazy when washed. I almost lost the seams. Had to put in secondary seams (which shrunk the overall size even more) plus zigzag to keep the cloth from eroding further. Bottom line: finish all raw (cut) edges. Signed, Master of the Blindingly Obvious.
  14. Capt Jacob may be on to something there. I had noticed pyracy.com getting just a tad pokey. I emptied my internet cache, and it seems distinctly more snappy now.
  15. Dingdingdingdingding! Said by our friend with the inexpressible table manners, Mr. Creosote. (But, my bad, for posting an ambiguous quote.)
  16. Whoops, not the one I had in mind, but you are right. I was thinking of a distinctly less appetizing instance.
  17. Okay, so I guess it's my turn... hmmm... Haven't read the whole thread. Hope I don't repeat one. Let's try this one... "I'll have the lot."
  18. That was the general idea. Just wondering what a sparrow pirate would look like. Probably something out of Redwall. (no offense, capt jack!)
  19. Chewin' on one end of me mustache. (You did say right this second...)
  20. Say, Patrick, how about whomping up a portrait of Cap'n Jack Sparrow?
  21. "Jack Quackham" (makes more sense if yer says it fast.)
  22. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul. -- excerpt from "Invictus" by William Ernest Henley
  23. I'm very affectionate and touch-oriented. Unfortunately, I'm also terminally shy. Not a good combination...
