  1. Sink the tub??? Hmmmmm.....Post-parade pirate party? Tow the thing out with the Royaliste into international waters, and have 'piracy drills' in case Royaliste be going south next year. Coastie PS-Is that an suggestion acceptable to you, Saber? PPS-I'd hate t' see something as creative as this go t' the bottom, at least not without being replaced by something bigger and better. Maybe postpone the pirate party for a few years while you work on yet another float?
  2. Hope all the beer is good, and the women better. Happy Birthday Coastie
  3. I hadn't heard that he visited the Lady Washington. If he did, it would be resembling Sophie, though if I remember correctly, Sophie was a flesh-decked brig, whereas the Lady Washington has a prominent poop deck, as well as a small quarterdeck. I have seen pictures of him on the Rose, which of course is playing the Surprise. It might have been that ship he was referring to. Of course, I could be dead wrong, but all the times I've sailed the Lady Washington (many times after his death, as well as before), I haven't heard that O-Brian was ever aboard. Heck, I've sailed for week upon week without pay. $500 sounds pretty good. Plus, for only two days of work? Heck, I get about $725/month, and only get to take home $380 of that. And it's much less enjoyable than sailing a tall ship off Mexico (or anyplace warmer than CT at this time of year) Coastie
  4. Entering port is, I think, the cream of the sport. A strange port, a yacht with no engine, a quiet summer's night and there one has all the makings of a pleasant and most interesting little bit of seamanship. -Humphrey Barton "To sail is the thing," wrote Arthur Ransome in his children's classic Swallows and Amazons. And just what is that thing? Every sailor knows. It's what the poets say and the pictures show, and everything else, too; it's the joy of casting off and the delight of returning home, and it's all the winds and waves in between. It's the beauty of a boat and the power of the currents, the sound of ratcheting winches and the strain on the wheel; it's the fair breezes and sunsets, the storms and luffing sails. It's the beer in the bar when the race is done, and that moment when you feel you'll never get there. It's what sailors mean when, safe and dry, standing on solid ground, they look at you and say "I'd rather be sailing." -Anne Depue Isn't that last one great?
  5. As I just stumbled on this post today, I have some advice from way back on the first page. If you can't shoot, or even throw candy, what about shooting grafiti over th' crowd's heads? It's lightweight paper, and unless they'd consider it litering, it would be really cool. Next, instead of tattered sails, why not just have them furled? You throw a couple of bedsheets up on the yard, and there you go. You can even furl them loosely, so it lookes more like the sail has been cast of and is in its gear. You'd get the classic Disney sail kind of look (see link). http://www.shop-fast-easy-toys.com/cgi-per...-locale-uk.html Also, I didn't realize they had so many figureheads on ebay!!! I just searched for 'figurehead', and found between 10-15! When I finally get my boat, I'll know where to go. Good luck on this, it's looking good so far! Don't forget a plank! Coastie
  6. There were quite a few, I'd presume. I've heard stories of a husband and wife pirate couple from New York (if'n I be remembering correctly). They had a semi-prosperous career without getting caught. This might be why they were not confirmed as pirates, but the locals all knew otherwise. There's also The Goat. I forgot her actual name, it was I think Maggie something or another, but she was known as The Goat. She led essentially a street gang that moved on to bigger and better things on the water. One source ye might want to look up is a book I've read called Booty (double meaning, I'm sure). It has quite a few stories of women pirates, though I'm not really sure how accurate all of them are. Hope this helps. Coastie
  7. Age again? If that's the case, you might not remember mailing it to me, either... Coastie (just in case you forgot)
  8. Royaliste, I found this at http://geocities.com/ancasta1/oddities.htm and thought you would enjoy, as would others in this fine pub. Sir Arthur Aston, Royalist commander during the English Civil War, was beaten to death with his own wooden leg by Cromwell's men. Coastie
  9. Well, I'll start with me nautical links, in no particular order (these are just the ones I've re-accumilated since my reformat about 6 months ago): http://ladywashington.linsect.com/ http://noquartergiven.net/ http://www.portroyalprivateers.org/ http://www.shipscompany.org/ http://www.thebilgepumps.com/ http://theageofsail.com/ http://www.westcoastmutineers.com/index2.html http://www.batkivshchyna.net/ http://www.bobwebb.net/ http://www.chivalry.com/cantaria/ http://www.hms-victory.com/ http://www.fortogden.com/maryceleste.html http://www.nwseaport.org/ http://www.jsward.com/shanty/ http://gamgee.acad.emich.edu/~tomlewis/alphalist.html http://boat-links.com/ http://www.uscg.mil/hq/g-cp/history/Prohib...hoto_Index.html http://www.woodenshipsmusic.com/ http://tallships.sailtraining.org/ http://www.ace.net.au/schooner/index.htm http://www.mudcat.org/threads.cfm http://www.acronet.net/~robokopp/shanty.html http://www.thepiratestreasure.com/index.html http://www.piratedocuments.com/index.html http://www.infa.abo.fi/~fredrik/sships/ http://www.schoonerman.com Enjoy, Coastie
  10. DAMN!!! You be an old fart... I hope there's many more Coastie
  11. Sounds good. As soon as I get me finals schedule (and therefore leave date) I'll see if'n it be feasable fer me. I'd love t' attend. Coastie
  12. Can't wait. I was actually interviewed as an extra about two years ago for it, but couldn't due to my military obligations...damn them Revenue Cutter types... However, I've been trackin' this flick for quite some time an' I hope it does quite well. I don't know what Royalieste is saying about not hooking us with the first books. I was hooked when I read 'em, a good script and producer would have hooked us with the movie. Maybe, though, since they couldn't use the Lady Washington for this one, that for a prequel, they would use her as the Sophie. I know she's not flush decked, and probable not quite big enough, but she is so pretty. Isn't that all that counts for Hollywood? Plus, it would make a victory over something like the Grand Turk, HMS Detroit, Endeavour, Niagra , Bounty or the Rose that much more amazing. Coastie
  13. I still wish I were there, wish I could put aside some vacation time, and wish I had a significant other to drag along t' join ye folk. I've got most o' me own gear already, but about 4000 miles t' traverse, and no flexible vacation time. Damn them Revenue Cutter types... Maybe 'round Christmas/New Years I can make it down there, though no promises and I'd need a ride from the nearest airport. Coastie
  14. I'm a big fan of webshots. You can add your own images, which is what I've done over years of looking at the internet tall ship pages. Just download the images to your harddrive and drag 'em into the webshots window, and you've got insta-piratical screensaver. To make it even more authentic, some o' the images MIGHT be a-pirated... 15. I was at the tiller, when suddenly I shouted: "Look! There's New York!" Geoff and Nicky bobbed up out of the hatch and vainly searched the skyline ahead. "I don't see a damned thing except mist," grumbled Geoff. "I don't mean over there," I replied. "This is our landfall on New York right here!" They turned and saw I was pointing down into the waters around us. We were sailing through a sea of milk-bottle tops, cardboard cups, orange peel, broken crates and other such strange marine life, which told us, as surely as though we had seen the distant towers of Manhattan, that we were drawing near port. -Dennis Puleston
  16. Ay, tear her tattered ensign down! Long has it waved on high, And many an eye has danced to see That banner in the sky; Beneath it rung the battle shout, And burst the cannon's roar; The meteor of the ocean air Shall sweep the clouds no more. Her deck, once red with heroes' blood, Where knelt the vanquished foe, When winds were hurrying o'er the flood, And waves were white below, No more shall feel the victor's tread, Or know the conquered knee; The harpies of the shore shall pluck The eagle of the sea! Oh, better that her shattered bulk Should sink beneath the wave; Her thunders shook the mighty deep, And there should be her grave; Nail to the mast her holy flag, Set every threadbare sail, And give her to the god of storms, The lightning and the gale! -Oliver Wendell Holmes
  17. Uh...they can hold more Halloween candy?
  18. And the recent pirate craze, and the probable furthering of that with Master and Commander coming out, will hopefully help your exploits. I wish you luck with that, especially as I may need a job one day, or at least a berth an' some food. Coastie
  19. Ain't any others out there??? I know there be a few tall ships. The hermaphrodite brig Black Pearl (name's from before the movie), the schooner Mystic Whaler, the schooner Sound Waters... Where be ye? Coastie
  20. Hope you have a great day, both o' ye. Coastie
  21. By the way, any new developements on that whole foreign hull setback?
  22. If'n ye be intent on them not bein' mistaken for non-piratical boots, just affix a big brass buckle on th' front. It may serve absolutely no purpose whatsoever, but noone'll make fun o' ye...if they do, they won't live t' tell th' tale. Coastie
  23. That's because I wasn't there... She may be late again, from what I've heard. She got away from Aberdeen a few days late due to 25 ft seas at the bar, and 40 kts of wind from the south. Not exactly the type of sea you'd put out in to go to California, unless you really need to. Coastie
  24. Ironically, the Columbia and Lady Washington did that same thing when they sailed from Boston to the west coast.... mmmmm.... Coastie
  25. The Lady may be big and slow, but she's more maneuverable than ye'd think. I've done some amazing shit on her. And, were I on her, I'd be bettin' that we'd be th' first t' shoot a bit o' iron up yer rudder. I've sailed her on and off the dock, backwards and sideways. I will give the Royalist one thing though, she's faster over land. I stand by my Lady... Coastie
