  1. ah you are havin a go at smokers... would be interested...
  2. Fop?? many, many gentlemen wore wigs... not just the fops... Wigs were a sign of wealth and power... hence the beginning of the term "big wig".... so in order to be pc you need to change your mind set regarding wigs... now did the average pirate wear them? Don't know but some could be got from a grab bag at the barber's... old wigs and cheap. And if ye did not wear a wig.. from many of the pictures of the middling sort, they at least wore their hair on the long side... fops yes, indeed wore wigs, did snuff, but also wore make up, patches, the very best clothes and seemed to practice effeminate behaviours all to catch the attention of the ladies...yes ladies... It was more their behaviour that singled them out... foolish clothes horses perhaps, but they are treated as a different breed from the Mollies Club boys. And as to buckle shoes... go see the boot threads in Twill... the majority wore em, has nothing to do with being a fop.
  3. Reiley's look was pure amazement. He could not believe March had just asked him. "Shall I repeat myself?" March continued. "Did I not make myself plain?" Reiley frowned and paced away, hand coming down as if to dismiss ridiculous question. "Because I am a doctor!" he insisted. "I know that," March growled. "But did ye get off yer damn horse long enough to make sure the man was really dead?"
  4. "I need to know exactly what happened!" March barked at doctor as the Archangel drifted slowly on nearly calm seas. Safe distance had been placed between Port Royal and brigantine. Reiley rose to his feet and began to pace. Hands combed back long brown hair from wearied features. "What do ye want me to say? Damn it! He shot and killed a man!"
  5. I know Gentleman of Fortune has buckles on his site... or are they only shoe buckles... I wonder if his shoe buckle venture was profitable for him to invest in some more... and sword carriage buckles would be nice too.
  6. Sound of closing was deafening to his ears. He stepped backward into the darkness, watching for small portal to open once more. With no further breach of light, he cried out and flung himself against that which kept him from her. "NO! WAIT!! FOR GOD'S SAKE, COME BACK!" Fingers clawed at iron grate until faith had gone and he slowly moved away to collapse in furthest corner. Epistle, no longer could be read, and blindly finger tips moved to trace dainty writing. Over and over again, until paper was crumbled, clasped tightly to chest and anguished howl resounded from deep within before blond head fell and he began to weep like a child.
  7. I'm a crowd... bloody hell I need to lose weight!
  8. Great! Bookmarking this one... would be fantastic as a teaching tool at events...Thanks for the find!
  9. Quoting from Godwin's site: Hessian Shoe: The original plans for these interesting shoes were given to me by Lt. Col. Peter Boehm of the West German Army. Note the higher counter, the "wings" on the long tongues; the unique flattening of the toe fronts. The latchets were placed farther toward the back than in most other shoes of the period. Price: $140.00 hesshoe.jpg (7412 bytes) I would almost kill to see this in person and be able to compare....unfortunately the picture is only fair at best
  10. Can't ask for higher praise than that... !!
  11. Sea turtle shells? Can someone make some fakes as I think they are on the endangered list now, in which case I wonder if any real can be purchased...
  12. The problem with Jarnagin, they sound good but the pictures they show are for the later style Rev. War shoes... when I asked them to send me one I never heard back... been over a year now... As to Fugawee Either the Franklin or the Concord comes pretty close until someone starts making the proper item in an affordable price range. For them that have small feet.. and can fit in the larger sizes of the Ladies (aye I said Ladies) Debbie shoe... you have the tongue and the higher heel if that is the look ye want... I think they said they go up to a 12... If I recall correctly, check out GOF's site, there are some smaller heels in his picture collection of originals..as well as the Town Cries of London print series for more low heels, although not all... a lot of prints from the time show very high heels even for men...
  13. Thank you all! Well go hunting Foxe, thanks for pointing out the direction.
  14. Sterling clutching at heart... good thing ye be in my crewe and I know yer sense of humor.... Still tis the Gunner's daughter fer ye at the next event!
  15. Weariness had not yet resulted in sleep. At best, anxiety had given into restless tossing and turning once exploration of cell had proven futile regarding any chance of escape. He had gone over it the best he could, nearly one hundred times. He had been fed thrice, if feedings of such foul gruel would be considered such. Pigs ate better, he was certain of it. Already he had lost any sense of time other than the notion that he had remained in the dark, shackled and ignored for far too long. So that, when small door within door opened and remained so, he barely noticed. It was not until something was dropped into the interior, that he bothered to look. Hands came up, irons worrying already raw flesh, as the light all but blinded his good eye. As paper was spotted upon cell floor, he made effort to crawl and fetch it. Sitting back against door, he quickly unfolded it. He had to stand to read it, holding it up to the light that filtered in through small opening that had remained miraculously ajar. Je t'amie Hand came up to grasp iron grating, fingers laced with crossed bars, but he could not reach up high enough to look upon the outer world and the herald who had delivered petite missive. “Who are you? Are you there?” Sterling whispered, but none replied. “Tell her… tell my wife that I love her. Tell her that I did not mean what I had said. Twas only done to protect her and the baby. They would have taken her as well. I could not bear to know that she was imprisoned because of me! Tell her!!” He paused, hoping for a response. None came. Instantly resolve crumbled. Grasp tightened, shackles’ bite now harsh. “For God’ sake, give me yer word that ye shall tell her! I cannot get through this ordeal if she were to abandon me! If she did not know that I still love her….PLEASE!” heart rending cry echoed about stark chamber and door within door was slammed shut.
  16. See tis the dated to 1760s bit that troubles me... I believe it was GoF that informed me that the late 17th century/early 18th century lines were quite different...
  17. Shoe conversion not much different from the lower/middling sort shoe from the earlier GAoP. If possible keep the tongue long, and the cutout smaller
  18. Somewhere on the pub or the Archangel site, I believe Chole posted instructions on how to turn a pair of desert boots into period looking shoes... another cheap, safe and a better period appearance product... I'll see if I can find the thread... Again, as Silkie is a part of the Archangel crew, I would hate for her to spend money on something that won't get her into trouble at PiP but very well may get her banned from the field at some of the events we attend. Silkie, pm me with what size shoe ye wear... we do have some extras in the crewe.
  19. What if you shaped the foam to the size of a ball? Make it just big enough to slip down the barrel without using the ramrod... honestly, being a dragoon we never had a problem using ramrods... but see if the foam ball would work enough so you don't have problems with safety officers at events...
  20. Oh I'm not saying kick them out of camp... just can't see folks spending money on something that is either not right or that can't get them through the whole year... especially if money IS an issue...
  21. WoW!... hmmm. If the threads are gone, what would it require to just start a new one? If they can't get around to opening it back up again, why should you wait?
