  1. The Library of Congress lists it as fiction. I have a full 1926 version in which the editor's notes call out that "Nor, beyond a general remark in the Preface, is there any hint of the sources whence the author got his information." It's also pointed out that there are remarkable comparisons between the description of Captain Avery in the book and a certain Captain Avery, hero of "The Successful Pirate" a play by a dramatist named. . . . Charles Johnson. The book is interesting as a whole but in my opinion it might as well have the name "Daniel DeFoe" as the author as to its authenticity.
  2. We had a very successful set of raids during the day and the crawl (we took the traditional route) was amazing. My calves are still whining but it was all worth it. Huzzah to all m'fellow pyrates and wenches. . . it was a wonderful showing with smiles everywhere.
  3. Now's your chance to get onboard with The Pyrates Way magazine and besides the free booty of collectible trading cards, you'll get a FREE CD of pirated music performed by the likes of The Brigands, The Jolly Garogers, The Drunken Ferrets, and Cindy from Clan McCool! Plus you'll get two additional issues with your subscription as The Pyrates Way grows to include SIX issues without raising the price. http://www.pyratesway.com
  4. Unfortunately, we won't be attending Blackbeard this year. . .but for the best of reasons. My boy, Alex "Black Arrow" Kimball gradee-ates from High School!! Plus, he passed all his quals and physicals to enter into the Navy (like his father and grandfather before him) and is scheduled to take the Special Forces battery of tests prior to enlisting to become a Navy Diver. I'm very proud and the celebration of his new life must take precedence over my pirat-in'.
  5. Well said. . . . there was a LOT more to the show than what was on television. . . . and no respectful pyrate lets ratings rule what he or she enjoys on ye ol' boob tube. I raise one to ye and yer lady Greydog. . "here's to swimin' with bow-legged women"
  6. There's a reason. . . . I just can't say right now. heheheheheh.
  7. I watched the first 8 episodes of Pirate Master with my daughter tonight. . . now she's addicted and has the hots for Ben Fagan. . . she's only 13! I hope we get enough of the cast out in July for our Pirate Master Reunion/Pyrates Way 3rd Anniversary Par-Tay!
  8. Got the hotel set for Fells Point Pyrate Invasion. With help from a few Pirate Masters, The Pyrates Way will be everywhere giving away FREE magazines all day and then changing into our pyrate garb for the night time bar hop. This is going to be a blast!
  9. I'm at the Bay Area Fest in FL at the moment. . .will get the site updated on monday mate.
  10. The happiest of birthdays to ye, m'luv
  11. There's a full spread about this in the Autumn Pyrates Way. . .. ton of photos and we'll be sponsoring several contests like the flotilla of pyrate vessels. . . . talk about your creative pyrates! stay tuned!
  12. After being introduced to Steampunk this weekend, The Pyrates Way is jumping in with both feet. The Airship Pyrates was an immediate draw to us and I think there's enough material for both Pyrate magazines to cover such a cool, interesting, and unique view of this branch of fandom. Huzzah to PM for taking the lead (did I just type that?)
  13. Autumn 08 Pyrates Way is finally off press and being put together at the moment for a targeted March 1 mailing. Winter Pyrates Way is right behind it for an end of April mailing and Spring prior to then end of June. We have six issues of Pyrates Way for subscribers starting this year and the first special extra issue will be included in the Spring mailing. If you've an interest in Faire Magazine: Winter Issue: Goes to press two weeks - new advertisers have come on board and when the "checks" clear, we'll finalize the edits and get the thing to press - expect it in your mail box before mid-April. Spring will follow by the the first day of summer as we try to get caught up. First Issue Reprint: Ordered and will be printed, bound and delivered to our fulfillment house in 3 weeks. If you've ordered the reprint, you'll have it hot off the presses before the end of March. We're late on these items because of the economy. We can't pay the printer without the cash from advertisers and advertisers just haven't had the money to invest in advertising. Remember, we might be late on an issue. . . but we'll never, ever skip an issue. We also have some incredibly big distribution news on the horizon, so stay tuned!
  14. TAMPA (Bay News 9) -- The Gasparilla Pirate Festival in Tampa Saturday resulted in 79 arrests. Two of the arrests were for felonies and four were for boating under the influence. During the day, parade police made 57 arrests for underage possession of alcohol. Tampa Fire Rescue said they responded to about 80 calls for medical service. The whole story
  15. 16. Yeah, unfortunately there was a LOT missing in the article we ran. . . apparently there are more sci-fi folk who are into pyrates than I thought. . . to put it lightly. . . from Lost in Space to Star Wars there was so much missing in the way of pyrates in Sci Fi that I'm a bit taken aback. 'tis my fault. . . I should have read the thing better before accepting it.
  17. only 124 days to prepare for this annual event. Remember to help fight scurvy by drinking a wide variety of cocktails such as Margaritas or perhaps a Bloody Mary with a bit of lime it. Stay Healthy, Drink Heavy. I S A D
  18. you'll find m'name and dastardly publication in said credits!
  19. The name is Kimball, btw but I have to proofread my posts better, too.
  20. Uggggh. . . I just saw this: Fox Article Not even Toys R Us is safe to shop at! No wonder I do all my shopping online. . . . well until the UPS guy comes to the door packing heat.
  21. Well said. I think the Walmart folks are in the blame as well on this. I know locally in Philly, there was a report that the Walmarts were having some huge discount on a certain flatscreen TV but only kept a few in stock. . .just to get those folks purchasing. . . they all but asked to be mobbed! Then when that brand ran out, people were literally fist fighting over who got the last one. It's like creating a feeding frenzy for a thousand by bringing only food for two.
  22. He's a kick-ass Puritan at that. Why would "they" dismiss the religious overtones? . . . that's the whole point of being Puritan!
  23. I must agree with the most astute Dutchman. In mocking the movie "A League of Their Own," I commented several times, "There's NO CRYING in Pyracy" . . . . only to find myself misty-eyed at the procession, the memorial, and the after-party. Just to be a part of the event was humbling. Imagine being on the very beach where those dead men may be buried, both pyrate and royal sailor . . . which hasn't been properly memorialized since the last rites were said over their corpses (should that have even happened). 290 years and no one had ever given those folks their rightful due. Each man lived on the course they'd plotted, whether pyrate or sailor. Each man died as they'd sworn to. We give five pages to the event in the winter pyrates way but you don't need to buy the issue to experience the moment . . . that would bid ill-respect to those souls we honored. I threw together a quick recap to share with Blackbeard's Crew that very evening of the event and you can share in it by going to: The whole weekend made me proud to be a part of this hobby we call pyrate re-enactment. . . and although rarely dressed for the occasion, my heart was with each member of the crew. Many thanks to Kevin Duffus for allowing me to be a part of such an event as we all made history this past weekend.
  24. We'd love to be a stickler for the idea of quarterly (i.e. every 3 months) but it never seems to work. . .thus you'll notice the mark of a "season" on the cover. . . gives us a lot of space on either side of the release date. I don't speak for Pirates Magazine. . . just The Pyrates Way, but there are a lot of things that prevent a magazine from availability. One of the biggest problems with our subscriptions is the post office. Media Mail can take anywhere from two days to SIX MONTHS to arrive. I had to put my foot down on subscriber re-issues because they'd get the re-issue then a few months later their original subscription issue came in the mail. . .and as I pointed out. . .up to SIX MONTH later. I don't send out replacement issues until after that six month mark because we just can't afford to cover the lateness of the post office of which I have no control of. All I can suggest is to be patient. . . . it's out of our hands.
