I seem to recall something about 'cleaning out the prisons' of war criminals and shipping them to the West Indies during or just after the English Civil War. Any ideas?
-
What ever became of the Puritans? Did they drift into other sects? Any pirates claim to be Puritans?
-
While the pirates may not have had strong issue with politics did they have strong religious convictions? I have heard that often people choose a side in the English Civil War was because of religion. Pro Rome vs. Puritan. Church of England. I have also heard that Morgan himself hated papists and enjoyed doing horrible things to them (not just those Romans of Spain). Truth?

Back on Topic: So during the English Civil War was and after was in more common for Round Head or Royalists to be found amid the pirates?

GoF first let me say I have enjoyed your posts. I come here (Twill) to better my personal knowledge of history and pyracy in general. I respect, you and your group, Foxe, and the other pure history pirates. I like Living History. When I travel I often try to locate places that feature Living History as target locations. I would enjoy seeing a Living History pirate camp. I know you put in time and money and work hard to get the details tight and I respect that. However my topic was not to "justify" wearing bucket boots and ear rings. It was just a question. A simple question. My goal was to gain a bit of knowledge from those of you who have so much. You may respond with such knowledge or not, your choice. But to turn this post into a PURE vs. FARBY battle again (and again and again) is just nasty. I'm not looking for a time period to "fit in", I just like history from 1400 to 1720. So much was going on in the world. If you could see my book shelves you understand this. This site offeres so much. It is wonderful to get some the history from a European point of view (thanks Foxe and everyone!). Dude when you do this Pure vs Fantasy thing it just makes me feel unwelcome. Reminds me of High School.

I leave Feb 23rd 2006 for Ireland. If I can help anyone with my knowledge shoot me an e-mail. Happy to help. And Rummy I hope you have a great time.

Another great thing about the Fort was the sun set view. I found Mallory Square very crowded and kinda pushy.

How much of this Buccaneer era would have over lapped with the English Civil War? 30 years war? Did we agree on bucket boots and ear rings? How about those big cavalier styled hats?

So what is the time frame before the GAOP called? Silver Age? The Morgan Era? How much of one time frame relates to the next (if the 1930's and 1940's was the time period of our grand parents, 1950's and 1960's was the time of our parents, and the 1980's was our time...)? I would guess that the prizes in the earlier time frames were better.

Ireland is easy to do. I have been to the Emerald isle 3 times and head back on Feb 23rd for a long weekend. It also doesn't have to be expensive. My trip (which includes hotel, moter coach, and flight with one meal a day) costs about $1,000 USD. Tips: Go off season (not during the summer). Pick up a DK book on Ireland (much better than Frommer and with cool pictures. My wife and I used one in Portugal and it showed us many places that tourists would not find. Look into Student Hostels (you need not be a student or a youth, I just spend a little over a week in Scotland staying at hostels. Oh and don't let the movie creep you out. Hostels are fun!). Dress for rain and cooler weather. I am headed into Dublin and then north. This trip includes the Hill of Tara, Newgrange, Boyne Valley, and Belfast. I have been in the southwest and central parts of the country on past trips. Mypersonal favorites include the above mentioned Newgrange, King Johns Castle, Durty Nellys Pub, Blarney Castle and grounds, and Dvbinia Museum in Dublin. One note: Ireland isn't always what people think. The coffee table/ movie set/ pagan fey image of Ireland might crumble if you keep that kind of thing sacred. It is a great country.

What time frame are we talking about? I know that the Elizabethians would use bear grease in the hair like we use hair spray today.

I have heard of "Tar on the Pig tails" and wonder if it was done and why.
-
I thought the "Open Keg" tavern was very nice. Perhaps not 100% period but with all the lamps and candles it had a real "Feel" to it. To me it was how I imaged a pirate tavern in a captured fort would look like.

Foxe: English food must be that bad for you to keep a tin of larva.
-
I would recomend the Key Lime Inn. About a 30 minute walk from the fort but close to about everything else. Clean rooms, big beds, cottage style.
-
see what I can do.

Thanks Kass Everyone else also!

Well Kass if you have advice on how to make my coat behave I'm all ears. Otherwise I think I will try the baldric under the coat.

Another note: My wife just got an item that she won in the silent auction. A one of a kind glass picture. Just came in the mail. It rests upon our mantle. My wife just loves it. Things like this you don't find just anywhere.

I'm in the lower right clad in red.

Here is a picture of my coat on our web site. Not the best photo. Not a period coat. http://www.theatreofthenorth.org/

Anyone ever tried turtle? I would guess sea turtles are endangered and not recomend eatting them but what about another type of turtle?

Now that's what I'm talking about! I met a woman at the MN Ren Fest back in 2004 who introduced herself to me as "Mary Queen of Scots". The good Queen insisted that I ly my head upon the "royal pillows". Now who am I to go against royalty? When my good Captain appeared he was wearing his kilt (He's a Scottish Pirate). Good Queen Mary reached under the kilt and asked him to turn his head a cough. I thought he was about to have a heart attack!

I wonder why. To make the knife more tool than weapon? You can still cut with the knife but not stab a crewman?
