  1. Could you define one as more "outward directed" and the other as more "inward directed"? Living history and Re-enacting is more like playing a part. More acting for others to observe and discuss with. LARP is more inward. You do it for yourself. It's all about your imagination and where it leads you and those you play with. What do you think?
  2. For kiddie give-a-ways how about beads or knotted pieces of cord (Monkey's Fist?)? I use beads and the kids seem to like them.
  3. The Pyrates of Portobello will be back at the MRF. Some old stuff and a few new tricks!
  4. But let's not forget. Many of these people came from a life of crime. Perhaps you didn't want to go home because it was worse? And let's not forget that crime often makes for strange bed fellows. They say in our current prison system in the USA that low end criminals (thieves, swindlers, etc.) often become quite "hardened" after spending time with those who engage in hard and violent crime (rape, murder, etc).
  5. Funny that people still wear hats back wards today! I guess the saying holds that everything that's new is old.
  6. The image of 1687 that GOF provided is very interesting. It almost appears the fellow is wearing his hat of the side of his head (or am I seeing this wrong?). Is this just a jaunty way to wear a hat or something else?

    SiouxLand!

Just a quick piece of treasue I forgot: urls for both "The Blue Gryphon Buccaneers" and my own "Pyrates of the Portobello". I'm the cute one in the red coat. www.bluegryphonbuccaneers.com www.theatreofthenorth.org Join us for a great time in June!
  8. So B-Munky how was the tour? I'm headed home (Milwaukee) this weekend for Easter and driving down to Chicago on Sunday. Can you see any of the ship from outside the gate? Bristol is my personal favorite even though I work at Minnesota Ren Fest. I think that is because it was my first "taste" of a faire.

    SiouxLand!

The people who put Siouxland together work very hard. For them it is a labor of love and it shows. Patron, performer, and staff are all treated very well. I've also bought some cheap fest items from the vendors (although I did see prices rise last summer). If you make it don't be shy! Come on up and say hello!

    SiouxLand!

Mad Jack I think you will enjoy this tiny fest! My Lady's Cutlass should also be in attendance. Local pirate crew "The Blue Gryffon" will also be there with some sort of encampment. I met these rogues back in Feb. and they were a great group. If you have never been you will find it very small but with a lot of familiar faces from Minnesota.
  11. What about the term "Ship Wife"?
  12. Any word of if they waited to divide the loot until they docked at a port or if they split up the plunder right after the battle. I would imagine that jealous could cause for some nasty reactions.

    Port Tax

Any idea how much they used to demand? How about if the fee was based upon the size of the vessel, number of crew, or size of the cargo. I imagine this helped the smuggling trade.

    Port Tax

Ever heard of Port fees/ tariffs/ harbor taxes on ships and cargo?

    My New Suit

Foxe you look like a bit of a scrapper! I wouldn't mess with you in a pub!
  16. I have a friend in the Peace Core in Panama who has visted the Counting House. I guess it is made of coral and dates back to the 1600's. He hasn't had a chance to do too much of local activities yet.
  17. No not ship wrecked. I just remember that a friend of mine spent a little time in India in the mid 90's. She brought home wild hareem styled pants made out of the most outlandish fabrics. Some of these pants I swear wher mad out of sofa covers. I do a little writing from time to time (just for fun) and some of questions are research for such.
  18. How about using the absolutely worng fabric/ materials for the garment? Cut up bed sheets, sail cloth, or something else cobbled together?
  19. Ever seen anything that curled your toes at the Ren Faire?
  20. I wonder if Gombay and PiP will be at the same time in 06'? Did they do tours of the Fort while PiP was going on?
  21. Talk about the origin of a fashion how about men's ties? Always seemed like a bad idea to me. Wrap something tight about your neck and hope it never catches on anything and chokes you!
  22. Today we have fashion knock offs. Any history that shows people in the past doing the same? The style is French but the tailor was doing a copy job based upon notes and advice. Trying to "fake" a trend?
  23. William I think the music came from the Gombay Festival that was going on in the city. It was a street party of sorts.
  24. Loved PiP 2005 and I'm not complaining. But what if you could make some changes what would they be? Harken back to an older PiP? Something new? Remove a certain factor?
