  1. Hey, how about a post address? Anyone have an address for the Port Washington Pirate Festival? I can try snail mail!
  2. It did seem like the story should continue... Loved the scene with the habor chain! Captain Red sure was a mercenary too! Just wanted his gold throne.
  3. I recall watching a show on PBS entitled "Battlefield Britian" presented by a father and son team. They did a piece on the Battle of the Boyne which they implied had the first red coat uniforms for the British forces (red was the cheapest fabric at the time). I don't know much about these gents but the show was interesting. I don't recall if they mentioned a standing army at that time.
  4. The phone message I got when I called the number Bilge Monkey placed on this site mentioned something about a shop in Port Washington and gave me a new number. When I called the second number it did indicate the date of the 2009 festival. It sounded positive for this year. Now if I can get them to let me bring my game...

    Sword Canes!

I recall that one of the guys I used do stage combat with had a small sword - sword cane. I know that gentlemen often carried walking sticks. Any idea when someone first put a blade in one?

    Firelock?

I'm currently reading a book on the English Civil War and they mention "Firelocks". The author provides a brief description that still leaves me what the heck these are. He implies they are doglocks. Also mentions the snaphause (spelling). Anyone have knowlege of this term?
  7. They can inspire fear when threatened too!
  8. Do you mean with Europeans, or are you looking for accounts of bad eggs amongst the American aboriginals? Both. Just curious about 'Indian' pirates (not to be confused with East Indian pirates from India, that is another topic). Why do you want to know this anyhow? I do a little writing. I was also curious.
  9. Not an easy question.... As far as I have been able to figure, standard (in as much as standards exist in this period) started to appear with greater frequency as the 17th century wore on. I haven't done any real reading on the English Civil War, but I had thought that the ECW was when uniformed soldiers first started to appear.... But I could be wrong on that, I know John Churchill First Duke of Marlborough was one of the biggest driving forces for standardizing the English Armies of the period, a lot of the conventions he put into place wound up defining warfare well through the 18th century. I imagine it would be similar with the navy?
  10. I am currently reading a book on the English Civil War and was going over a section that stated that the English did not have a standing army but instead used militia or "trained bands". I wondered when full time military forces first appeared...
  11. Okay you are at the Faire or doing some living history event, perhaps at a movie premire and you have an encounter that just makes your decade. After said encounter you think to yourself "Yup, that's why I dress up as a pirate!" The moment need not be with a non-pirate or patron. It could be something you shared with friends or between fellow pirates. It could be a romantic tryst or a funny adventure. Drunk or sober tell me your tale!

  13. Anyone know if they chewed tabacco as a recreational drug or if the desired method of consumption was smoking?
  14. I suppose pirates didn't have an option to return to 'normal' society if they tired of the sweet trade.

    Wouldn't a bodice dagger be a "bodkin"?
  16. I seem to recall people branded for beggary in Tudor England. I believe these are considered "sturdy beggars" who could work for a living. As a side note: Had a black Karate instructor who was branded with his college frat symbol. I asked him about it and he told me "Never mind". He was one tough as nails dude!
  17. Any and all Native/ Natural peoples. As opposed to extraterrestrials? I believe the period term for the Native Americans/ Indians was either "Native" or "Naturals". Can anyone correct me if I am wrong?
  18. I assume that everyone drank more than they do today. Of course Pirates on a bender would go through a lot of the juice!

I think the shoes may have been named after the blade. Rather like Ajax as a Greek hero before a cleaning product.
  20. I know they found plenty of clay pipes in the ruins of Port Royal. I wonder if they found anything else that could have been used in recreational drug usage?
