  1. I often like to give out little trinkets to the kiddies but never give out candy. I was warned early on about the choking hazard of providing sweets to children. If I give the kids something that could fit in a tiny mouth (like a ring or a coin) I tell them not to put it in the mouth. Parents seem to like this approach.
  2. Thanks gents! Hey Dutchman what term should be used to describe masted ships? And don't worry about the soap box... I am here to learn and proper terms are part and parcel of the task.
  3. Thought it might be nice to have topic that makes suggestions for attending a pirate event both as a performer and as patron. Anyone offer any advice based upon things they have experienced?
  4. Hope to make this event. I'm not going to even try and contact the management to preform again. Too bloody hard to get the information. Just plan to drink and watch and have fun!
  5. Would not boarders want to climb aboard a ship at multiple points? A single set of stairs could be more easily defended by a few men. To swarm over a ship at various points would allow the pirates to take advantage of the larger crew they typically enjoyed.
  6. Most tall ships carried one or more oared boats for shore landings and maintenance. I have heard these boats called many things. What is the proper term(s)?
  7. The management of the festival is less than helpful.
  8. I have heard rumors that the Port Washington Pirate festival is going to happen. Anyone know the details? I posted this here because I found no way to post on the events thread. Delete if you must for my rule breaking ways.
  9. I saw the nomination for the last round of the Order of the Leviathan in Pirates Magazine. Just curious as to who is now considered a member of this elite group?
  10. Thanks ship mates! That was simple and I feet more than a little stupid asking the question.
  11. What is the opening and covering to cargo hold called? It often looks to be a grate or lattice of wood. I know these can be pulled up for access into the hold so that cargo can be lowered in on ropes. Curious about the historic name for these coverings.
  12. I take it that a blunderbuss is a more of a GAOP weapon than a tool of the Buccaneers?
  13. Can you eat with them in mate?
  14. Great stuff Gibbet! How are you doing this (process)?
  15. I know we have touched briefly on this topic but what sort of firearms would Morgan and his lads carried with them on thier various raids? I know the Spanish relied upon matchlocks but would the Buccaneers favored wheellocks, doglocks, or flintlocks (or a combo of these and others)?

    Stilletos

The thing about a stilleto is that the blade just looks so bloody nasty! Stab wounds, especially deep stabs, are most often fatal. You can just see someone getting jabbed under an arm with one of these slender blades and sleeping with the worms after bleeding out.
  17. Thanks for the comedic help friends! I am know down to one job and it isn't the nice one. You win some and then you don't.

    Trident Dagger

Perhaps First Mate Matt is willing to lend his creative talent toward building one of these. I think it would be a wonderful part of a Stage Combat phrase for the audience to see a fighter pop his trident and entangle his foes blade!

    Trident Dagger

Any of you familiar with a trident blade dagger/ main gauche? Know of any vendors who sell a decent one? Perhaps a stage combat capable blade?

    Stilletos

That is a beaut! I recall Museum Replicas sold a copy that was similar in design.
  21. Mission my brother of another mother, steal away! You are a pirate after all! And as a side note: I love reading Missions posts on Twill too!
  22. I fall into the realm of "Hollywood", "Reel", or "Farby" pirates on the forums. I call myself an entertainer, because that is what I do. My goal isn't always to educate you like a re-enactment or living history pirate (which can be very entertaining). My goal isn't to be 100% period (I wear bucket boots and have a mug on my belt). I sing, dance, engage in model ship battles, fight with rapier and dagger in a more Elizabethan or Stewart fashion. My goal is to make you happy and have a good time at the event I perform at. Even better if your a kid! I try and create a larger than life pirate, a lovable scallywag with a heart of gold. That said I think I have been treated pretty fair on the Twill forum. Had a rough run in with GOF way back when (no hard feelings, he set me straight and was a real Gent about it!). I like to ask questions on Twill to educate myself and for research. While I think most posters play nice I think a few folks do seem clique-ish and can get snotty on some replies. Lady Bower had it right, with no one in front of you we loose the ability to judge how a comment is intended. I had the pleasure to meet Patrick Hand a few years back at PiP and he's a great guy. One of the people who when I read his posts I wish I was closer because he is such a interesting person that I am certain we would be good friends (Patrick can make just about anything and he's willing to try so much!). That said I enjoyed the Buccaneer Project posts and hope that this post might bring Patrick and others, back to Twill.
  23. Okay, I work one full time job and 2 part time jobs. Yeah it is a lot but it has to be done. So my full time job requires me to work overtime, often at the drop of a hat. I can come in and work a full shift only to be told that they need me to work a few more hours. I try and be a good a employee and help out as much as I can. Back in June the Boss laid off 19 employees to keep the company profitable. Over time is now frequent and often forced upon us. The Boss has not asked me to work on my time off, when he knows that I am working another job(s), yet. That is about to change. Shadowy threats and rumors have been over heard; I have been warned that he is about to ask me to blow off my weekend job to work overtime. Should I refuse I risk being let go. If I miss a weekend at my weekend part time job I will endanger that job as well (and they never make demands upon me). My part time jobs pay better than the full time job but are only for a few hours per week (10 and 20 hours respectively). I put in as much OT as I can without effecting my part time jobs but it is the weekends the Boss hungers for. How would you play this situation out?
  24. I'd be disappointed if you didn't...
  25. No Catholic Pirates...? Try the Knights of St. John/ Knights of Malta. Grace O'Mally. I imagine you could fine a few Catholics from the Spanish, French, and Portuguese who took up the sweet trade. I imagine they all thought they were very good Catholics.
