  1. Am I correct that the name of the blade has something to do with "5 Figures"? I also recall it worn in the small of the back.
  2. Of course the POTC series does make being a pirate very popular!
  3. You can always go for a bodkin. A dagger poking out betwixt the girls can be easily drawn and may look slightly intimidating. ( )v( )
  4. Of course good members of the Church of England thought of Quakers, Ranters, Diggers, and many other sects as heretics. Would it be fair to say you considered anyone who didn't pray like you to be a heretic?
  5. I found some answers to my question that also concurs with what Hurricane posted. In "Mayflower Bastard" a historical account by David Lindsay which follows the life of Plymouth Pilgrim Richard More it mentions beginning around page 166 that More's Salem tavern or "ordinary" served beer, cider (hard cider), and wine. The sale of wine however was limited by law to be sold only to "strangers". Lindsay goes on to say that the term strangers are not residents of Salem. More tends to server mostly sailors and this law is not often enforced. Locals who frequent the tavern are served wine on the sly. Wine seemed to difficult for certain people, mostly for religious reasons, to enjoy. Didn't know all the gems I'd find in this book when I selected it.
  6. Would you assume that a typical tavern carried a selection of beverages or only one?
  7. In my readings I find that most people who hated the Catholics often did so out of rumor and fear rather than personal experience. They were told repeatedly that the Pope was the Anti-Christ and his minions sought control of the world. Of course the Catholic Church was the largest landholder in Europe at the time and corruption was quite evident. Most people could not read did not have the personal relationship that Drake had with Catholics. They hated based upon what they were told and demonized them in turn. Of course many a Catholic could hide in plain sight. The Christmas Carol "The Twelve Days of Christmas" is said to be teaching device used by Catholics to educate the tenets of the faith. Of course you had to go to church for prayer services (not attending earned you a fine) but in your privacy you could pray as you wish.
  8. I take it Lekko worked out better for you as a source of hat blanks?
  9. Didn't Drake absolutely hate Catholics?
  10. As a spin off to the thread about behavior in a period tavern (where we touched briefly upon this topic) I thought we could continue the discourse on Catholic Pirates. I seem to recall that many English Catholics flocked to the Kings banner during the English Civil War (perhaps in hope of tolerance upon victory) and had to seek new residence upon the success of Cromwell and his Roundheads. I also believe that Cromwell in his conquest of Ireland for plantations transported many Irish to the Caribbean (Hell or Connaught!). The Portuguese, long time allies of the English were Catholic. After the Restoration the Queen was herself was Portuguese and passionately Catholic. Much of South America was in control of Portugal. I also recall Mission posting something about a group of French Freebooters having a mass said before a journey and even killing one of there own who was making non-pious comments. And Hurricane mentioned Catholics in Port Royal. Of course the Spanish were Catholic too!
  11. I wonder how the Puritans viewed such behavior in Port Royal? Did not Cromwell send his "New Model Army" to take the colony from the Spanish? Certainly Puritans imbibed in drink. I imagine more than a few were less than pious (despite the image).
  12. Now lads we've got Gibbet locked away in the North Country hard at work on the buckles. I'm sure he'll get some made if he does fall out the top sails. Next is to get him working on tips and keepers...
  13. Baldric looks great Shortshanks! What I am looking for will need to be a little more adjustable. I'm thinking of something with buckles so I can adapt it to fit whichever sword I need at the time.
  14. I'm currently reading a book entitled "Mayflower Bastard" by David Lindsay and read mention of a type of sea captains coat called a Dreadnought Jacket. I wondered what it looks like. It may have connections to the Puritans and Pilgrims in the colonies of the early to mid 1600's. Any ideas?
  15. I seem to recall another thread where we discussed the appearance of the women in the service industry at Port Royal. As I recall the concept was that most professional women might not have been very attractive, simply available. I believe we also spoke that few disrobed completely when doing the dirty deed. So perhaps these rough cut ladies just dealt with crass and brutish men? They had no looks to fall back on and lived day by day. Maybe they just bit a lip and took a mental trip else where when engaged in the act much in the fashion that some people work fast food or retail today? Still curious as to who would provide the service as opposed to who is just a scullery maid...? Maybe it is location or time of day? If you are in the Three Turns after sunset you must be a whore!
  16. Checked out your gallery Shortshanks but saw naught of a baldric (some other great stuff however!).

    Shepherds Pie

What about a dribble of gravy on top of the pie? Good or no?
  18. Any chance you can post images of those baldrics Shortshanks? I'd like to create a new baldric ECW style. I have a new buckle from Gibbet Jones and it needs a home.
  19. I'm on Face Book under "Obadiah Jib". My FB is all about piracy. Always happy to make new friends!

    Shepherds Pie

I don't know if Shepherds Pie is a period dish but we eat it at least once a month during the cooler weather. How do you make yours?
  21. Here's a couple questions about Taverns and Behavior. First, would the average visitor to a port side tavern know which ladies are for sale and which just work in the establishment (or are they the same?)? Secondly, in a rough area like Port Royal how could a person run a tavern when you had no official police force/ town guard to prevent a group of pirates from simply killing the tavern owner, stealing his merchandise and drinking for free (or at least being so intimidating that the tavern owner allows them to drink for free and take a share of his profits)?
  22. Are we drawing a common thread between freedom (or the desire of freedom) and religion? Seems to me the two might mean different things.
  23. I often wonder if the motivation for people was always spiritual... how much was motivated by money.
  24. Now Jones don't forget your pal Jib! I have Eric at Elanda Leather ready to make me a baldric and hanger. All I need is one of your strongest buckles.
