  1. I have Norton on both my office computer and at home. It caught the attempt the second I logged on and slapped the thing down.
  2. I've sent a note to the other HMCA folk, so hopefully we'll catch the broadcast in one way or another. Kass, I don't know this Peter Woodward at all. What is it he gets so wrong? Not being nasty, sincerely interested. If the HMCA can help correct the problem we'd like to know the issues. Capt Jim has the best immediate solution; watch it and go from there. As always if questions arise take it to the forums and the search engines.
  3. All great suggestions, thank'ee! I'm more likely to go with the Protestant Deacon angle, mostly because a am one. Just not a lot out there on any non-catholic christian influence in the Caribbean. Still, the suggestions have given me several new directions to work on. I'll try and get back here to post my decisions once I finish the first draft of the character and see if it jibes historically.
  4. If y' be wanting something fairly good lokkin and relatively inexpensive for your first cutlass take a look at www.popinj.com His stuff is all fightable and he stands behind his work. Well....technically we should all stand behind his work, if you know what I mean.... :)
  5. Good idea; I also can get my hands on the stole that goes with the Chasauble robe which would be a fantastic sash. Walking a thin line PC-wise, though. Publicly in this garb I wouldn't want it to be considered a mockery of any kind, which is how it'd most likely be perceived.
  6. I'm thinkin more along the lines of Mr. Echo's (sp?) character on Lost. The guy has a lot of baggage and isn't even sure which way his faith is leading him. He's(the pirate) still got his cross, his leatherbound prayer book and the remnants of his faith. I'm still working out why he had his falling out, though.......
  7. That's certainly a help, Kass; thanks! I'm figuring he'd likely lose a lot of the flash, partly out of a sense of guilt (or possibly anger at this point), but would keep some material possessions of his faith. I'm on the right path at least......
  8. Greetings all~ I'm currently working on adding some depth to a piratical persona. The character started out as a priest or vicar in Port Royal and is forced by circumstances to go on the account. Aside from the usual accoutrements of a man of the cloth, what items would mark him as a former man of the cloth? Items he would keep on himself regardless of his current line of work? How does the clothing differ in, say, 1720, from other GAoP clothing? Thanks in advance, MJ
  9. I'd be interested in this book as well; do you know if Donne was publishing out of Europe or someplace in the New World? I'll start the search engines turning and see what I can find.....
  10. Thanks, Bo; it definitely rocked. The instructors came back with so much positive feedback that we're already implementing many of the ideas and some of the weapons for the next class in Michigan and for future versions of the seminar in 2007.
  11. For those still following this thread, the event was a tremendous hit! Two days totalling 16 hours of hands-on work in a variety of weapons, culminating in a free-for-all with mixed weapons on Sunday. We had 30 students in all; enough to overflow the boundaries of the DEMAS salle and into the alley! Response was so favorable (you can read many of them on talesofthesevenseas.com) we'll be doing this again and again, each time adding new maritime weaponry and techniques!
  12. Get the ring! Your interests will come and go and branch out into other areas, but the ring is a permanent thing. Or should be. I wound up in deep water for buying a $250 officer's sword instead of paying off my divorce fees and my second wife still hasn't let me live it down. Get it right the first time and get the ring. :)
  13. Aye, That's Dave Cvet's group isn't it? Great presentations at ISMAC a couple years back.
  14. Depends somewhat on where you want to go with the swordplay. Are you thinking theatrical, historical, full-contact or all of the above? There are a number of WMA groups out there now specializing in various forms of swordplay. Most likely you'll eventually try all the venues and each has its pros and cons. Stage combat allows you to play for the public, and pull off being a swashbuckler without having to pad up and wear non-period protection. Historic works if you're interested in how it was really done, but you're limited to doing demos and sparring with more protection. Or you can do both; learn how to make historically accurate sword techniques safe to use in an entertainment format. Modern (electric/Olympic) fencing has so little to do with actual swordplay its usually a disapointment for folks in our line of interest. Check out both of these: they cover both the historically correct WMA styles and the stage adaptations of the same. www.artofcombat.org www.historicalmaritimecombat.com Good luck!
  15. Nullus adictus inurare in verba magistri. Not bound to swear allegience to any authority.
  16. Latest Update! This seminar is getting a great response, so much so that we are approaching the max allowable for the salle its being held in. Anyone planning to come at this point needs to get their registration in ASAP. www.davenriche.com See you there!
  17. Phew! For a minute there I thought ye'd bagged the first flying pig.
  18. My only disappointment was that they'd just come off the "Salty Piece of Land" tour (fantastic book and CD) and he didn't do the song! That, and we probably could have done without the one lone plastic surgery patient showing off her investments every single time the monitor swung her way. Other than that, helluva show, Jimmy!
  19. Just took my wife and 7-yr old daughter to see him in Portland a few months back. It's not something to be missed! Enjoy the show, and watch out for the 25 foot inflatable remote-controlled shark!
  20. The new site for the HMCA is has now been launched! This site covers seminars and studies in personal maritime weaponry from the 17th thru 19th centuries. We're all very excited about finally getting the site going, and hope to have our first book out soon! www.Historicalmaritimecombat.com Enjoy!
  21. Sweeeeet! Happily, mine being assembled thru trial and error looks like a combination of this one and the "Mouse colored wool" one on that same page two pix down. Mine will have buttons ans less pleats but I'm right on target it seems! Thanks for the help! Now you'll just have to help me figure out how to post a pic of it here when I'm done. Though come to think of t it'll be on the TradBucc Yahoogroup as well. I owe ye!
  22. A buddy of mine down in california went out hunting havalina (sp) with a longbow. Fortunately he brought his 44 Desert Eagle with him. The thing took an arrow thru the body and attacked the jeep the archer was standing in, nearly ripping the tire off the wheel before he could put two slugs in it from above.
  23. See SEE??!! All the really cool stuff happens back east! Take one down fer me, Cap'n!
  24. Working on my leather buccaneer coat while listening to Radio ZION internet reggae...........
  25. Got the body done today and the sleeves, though I'm relly not happy with the huge split sleeves now that they're on there and am thinking about stitching em closed. Should have pix after the buttons are in place. I want to go with Brass but I keep hearing pewter is more acceptable. Also I want larger buttons onthe cuffs than on the body and pockets but have no idea what size to use. Any suggestions will result in a round of ale at the pub!
