  1. I finished a scarf I was doing for Jack (black and white stripes running lengthwise - kind of Tim Burtonesque.) Just in time for the brisk weather.
  2. It's getting a tad cooler here and someone in the office keeps turning down the thermostat in the afternoons so it's freezing in the morning. I just bought a space heater and it's on full blast, although I'm still wearing my jacket and scarf. Brrrr! So tonight dinner's a big batch of risotto and crusty french bread (comfort food.)
  3. ^ I'd start with a historic tour of England (particularly Portsmouth), venture up to the family lands in Scotland and then hop over to visit more rellies in Ireland. Haven't had a chance to do that yet, so it would be my first pick. < Getting ready to be in the San Jose Holiday parade this weekend. V If you could pick one super power, what would it be?
  4. ^ It depends on the situation (I'm too much of a pragmatist to go one way or the other on this.) < Yay - starting to feel much better! V If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
  5. It's a bit brisk here - 20's/30's at night, 40's/50's during the day. And yes, I know this sounds balmy to some of you, but keep in mind that those of us who live in areas that don't normally get very cold also don't have the insulation in our homes that would give us actual relief from the cold.
  6. ^ Worked as Operations/IT Manager for an employment agency where the president skimped on areas that were crucial to the business (and were mostly in my department) just so she could get a bigger bonus. She retired and someone even worse took her place; this guy proceeded to drive the company into the ground with his stupidity and enormous ego. < Hoping this cold doesn't develop into one of those month-long coughing bouts. V Have you started your Christmas shopping yet?
  7. ^ My 1630 reale - part of the treasure of the Santa Maria de la Consolacion, which was chased by pirates. The ship was scuttled so the pirates wouldn't get the treasure. < Woke up with a raging sore throat today - damn! V Do anything special this weekend?
  8. I always do a non-standard meal for Thanksgiving. This year, Jack and I are having my folks over for lunch and the main course is my fabulous french onion soup. Then we're off to a resort in the Monterey area for the weekend. It's become a tradition for us. Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving weekend!
  9. Also from the Bogie and Bacall movie "To Have and Have Not".
  10. ^ I've been bitten by a variety of things: large dog (shredded my hand when I was a kid), snakes, horses, sharks (used to dive in a shark tank), various fish - I'm sure there's more to this list. < Going to a beach resort in Monterey for Thanksgiving weekend V Are you hosting Thanksgiving dinner?
  11. By the way, I'll be making personal floggers for the ladies this weekend.
  12. Not sure, but if there's a problem, tell them that they will be stored at the Tales of the Seven Seas encampment.
  13. Waaah - there's no way I can get down there that day! I am officially envious!
  14. They allow them, as long as you clean up after them. At least they did last year and I haven't heard any differently this year. In fact, the person in charge of this faire was recently adopted by a stray dog, so my guess is that she's even more sympathetic to dog owners. And we'll be easy to find. We're in the Bedlam area - just look for our float, the Land Shark: And yes, we have places to store coolers and such. We'll have an entire kitchen area. And if you can't think of food to bring, we could use some wood for our fire pits... And yes, they are black powder friendly. We'll have two or three black powder carronades in camp and many of our crew will be bringing their pistols. The folks in charge realize that most of us in the Bedlam area are pirates, so I'm sure what you plan on wearing will be fine. No worries. This particular faire is pirate-friendly. By the way, we have some entertainment planned that y'all may be pulled in to... Oh, and forgot to mention. If you are going to hang out in any of the camps there's no smoking or modern looking sunglasses.
  15. We'll be having a big potluck on Saturday; I think Caroleen is making mutton or some such thing. If you'd like to join us, be sure and bring your eating implements! Also, it would be way cool, as they say, if you could bring something to drink or throw on the fire.
  16. Good thread, Patt! The same sort of questions asked of the gents have resulted in pretty much the same type of answer: it depends. What looks good on one woman might not look good on another. Same goes for men. Although I must admit that just about every piratical type of garb looks good on my better half Iron Jack, but that's because he's such a dashing rogue...
  17. That's one thing I wish Jack and I had room for - a tiki bar. When I was a kid, one of my neighbors had a tiki bar setup in his back yard and we'd go to parties there. I thought it was the coolest thing around and still do.
  18. By grog, do you mean that magical elixir that you had with you last year?... That was sure good stuff! Bring anything you want - I'm making my usual rum cake and my special pirate piƱata.
  19. Mine should be fairly obvious, given my name...
  20. It'll be great to see you! We're having another potluck on Saturday night, with the usual rum and mayhem.
  21. ^ Stayed at home and watched Shaun of the Dead and Land of the Dead < Trying to figure out what to make for dinner V This was missed last time: if money was no object, what kind of car or truck would you get?
  22. ^ Yes - I got a car for free about twenty-five years ago and after a bit of restorative work, made a few modifications that made it kick serious butt. (Can't beat free...) < Attending a wake for a friend's mother this Friday (a great lady - the world is a sadder place with her gone!) V Speaking of automotive vehicles, if money was no object, what kind of car or truck would you get?
