  1. So kind of the midwest to help us in San Francisco celebrate this anniversary in such an apropos way...
  2. Wow - gas is that cheap out there? Here in the San Francisco area (where pretty much costs more), gas is already past $4 per gallon. I suspect it's the same in Hawaii. I'm very happy my Saturn gets better gas mileage than a Prius, but I am adjusting the way I drive to eke out even more efficiency. So far, I'm saving a gallon a week. And I'm glad Jack is having me manage his portfolios - I got him into American Funds. They'll go further into a cash position rather than let their funds hemorrhage.
  3. I've had Vampire Vineyards wine (only place I've seen it locally is in a small wine shop on the coast just south of San Francisco.) It's not bad.
  4. DEFINITELY overcompensating. I once fought a guy who used two long swords - I had a tomahawk and a long knife and made short work of him (no pun intended...) I recommend one cutlass and one axe.
  5. Mmmm - soup! Best accompaniment to that (IMO) is grilled cheese sandwiches!
  6. Aye - congratulations on making it to "crew" Silkie! And I hope you have a GREAT first sail. My advice... I've been sailing for years and still use it.
  7. Some people exist solely to provide entertainment or cautionary tales for the rest of us...
  8. How are you holding up, Syren???
  9. Whups - should probably have some butter for that bread...
  10. How about some leek and squash soup? With some crusty french bread...
  11. Books, edged weapons, black powder, sailboats, Jack.
  12. Finishing up a small plank table for our buccaneer's camp.
  13. Oh. My. God. (Isn't that the way you KNOW you've arrived - you're immortalized as a PEZ dispenser?)
  14. ^I'm partial to Grace O'Malley myself. Had a fleet of ships and a husband named Iron Dick. < Should be a sunny weekend - going sailing! V pass the question
  15. Well, since the rest of us walk on water, we'll somehow find it in our hearts to be forgiving... No worries - you should know you have friends here and we all go through difficult patches from time to time. Good luck getting off the pain meds - have had to do that myself.
  16. Did someone say lots of spices? Here's some Northern Indian food - samosas, naan, malai kofta, seekh kabab and benghan bharta: (Let me know if you want me to translate/identify any of those.)
  17. Just the general doldrums, then? Aye - those do seem to be going around. Hope you venture out of them soon!
  18. In the Fremont standoff, the police eventually threw seven teargas cannisters into one of the windows and the guy exited and was taken away. Apparently, he has a history of violent behavior. The woman he attacked was hurt, but not too badly. At least she was able to get away from him and call the police.
  19. I'm hoping that this spate of weirdness passes soon. Today about half a mile from where I work, a man is holed up in a condo, surrounded by police. He apparently violently attacked a prostitute and then locked himself in this condo. Right now, there's a standoff and the road between my office to the freeway has been closed off and traffic is insane. So I had to go to the bank during lunch and I made my way to an alternate route. I got stuck behind a huge propane truck and subsequently was not able to see the traffic light - at all. When it was time to turn, I followed the truck and was closely followed by another car. So closely that if I had stopped or even slowed down, I would have been rear-ended. Next thing I know, a traffic cop stops both of us and we're both cited for running a red light (that I couldn't even see and I would have had to run anyway to avoid an auto accident.) This is particularly distressing because the last time I got a ticket was in 1992! GRRRRR!
  20. Thanks!! Red Cat - I don't want the nights to be too quiet...
  21. Not a big fan of Peeps. They are made with marshmallows, which are made with gelatin, with is made by boiling the bones and hooves of dead animals.
  22. Thanks! At least this time it didn't end up with a man weeping on my porch. {{{Hugs back}}}
  23. Aye - humans are a rather perverse species.
