  1. The Wild Rover I've been a wild rover for many's the year I've spent all me money on whiskey and beer But now I'm returning with gold in great store And I never will play the wild rover no more And it's No, Nay, never, No, nay never no more Will I play the wild rover, No never no more I went in to an alehouse I used to frequent And I told the landlady me money was spent I asked her for credit, she answered me nay Such a customer as you I can have any day And it's No, Nay, never, No, nay never no more Will I play the wild rover, No never no more I took up from my pocket, ten sovereigns bright And the landlady's eyes opened wide with delight She says "I have whiskeys and wines of the best And the words that you told me were only in jest" And it's No, Nay, never, No, nay never no more Will I play the wild rover, No never no more I'll go home to my parents, confess what I've done And I'll ask them to pardon their prodigal son And, when they've caressed me as oft times before I never will play the wild rover no more And it's No, Nay, never, No, nay never no more Will I play the wild rover, No never no more
  2. Anyone have recommendations for good books on this subject? I could certainly use a few! :)
  3. Not a shanty, per se, but fun enough... Renaissance Faire I was told once, by a friend of mine She had seen an olden sign, She said she was not from this time, And did I feel the same? So I told her, "Yes", I knew her fear As I felt the truth draw near. I told her back three hundred years, Was the time that I held dear... {Chorus} Gather ye lords and ladies fair, Come with me to the Renaissance Faire! Hurry now, We're almost there... Fa, la, la, la, la, la, la,la, la, la... Through the shroud of mystery, Turn a page of history. Feeling more than you can see, Down at the Renaissance Faire. Hear the minstrels play their tunes, They will play the whole night through, Special songs for me and you, And anyone whose heart is true... {Chorus} There's too many stars for one sky to hold, Some will fall, others are sold, As the fields turn to gold Down at the Renaissance Faire... {Chorus x 3} Fa, la, la, la, la, la, la,la, la, la... Fa, la, la, la, la, la, la,la, la, la... Fa, la, la, la, la, la, la,la, la, la...
  4. Thanks, mate. He's pulled 3rds and 4ths so far, simply because he wants to gawk during the rundowns to his slides. He digs trenches at home, but he's too busy looking for Elvis at shows. What can I say? He's still a farm kid. He'll grow out of it. :) Now, this is truly goofy. I just finished educating a bunch of wanna-be rocket scientists about the ballistics of 17th Century muskets. Me, a NASA brat, and former NASA employee? Too damned funny!!
  5. I keep having visions of the Dan Aykroyd bit "Frank Garvin, Male Prostitute." Sorry, Phil. I hope it was at least profitable. :)
  6. I'm pretty damned happy! I just realised I've made "Pyrate Legend" and never knew it! Drinks are on me!
  7. Yeah, Rogozinski's work has a great number of holes in it, but on this nearly all historians agree. Had Capt. Enigma not posted it, I would have found a source that says roughly the same thing. :) Easy for me to say, coming into the discussion this late...
  8. 5 minutes? That's at best two short songs (with no introductions), one full song with introduction and a bit of banter, or three (maybe four) jokes with pauses for laughter. 5 or 6 if you go all nervous and rapid-fire. Phil's right, and I've been there, too. 5 minutes is a blink of an eye on stage when you're killing, and an eternity when you're dying. May you always kill. :)

    SiouxLand!

Merry, it will be a pleasure to raise a jar in your fyne name. Perhaps more than once... :)
  10. Fires at Midnight - Blackmore's Night
  11. I may be over-prepping for the Siouxland Faire next weekend. I'd gotten together with some friends to watch the season finale of "Lost", and we decided to break out the rum and sing a few songs. We decided to try our hand at the "Stairway to Heaven" of the Renaissance, "Greensleeves". For those of you who know the lyrics, your's truly started out with "Avast, my love, you do me wrong..."
  12. Nice pistols, Hugh! Thanks for showing 'em off! :) Here's my brace of pistols ... and some assorted cutlery. I love the basket on the rapier! It looks so evil, yet so elegant! :)
  13. Thank you, Sir Eric! Here are some images that illustrate good Phil's article: Ah, the joys of the 64-colour box of Crayolas.
  14. Welcome back, Christine! We missed ye!
  15. It's true; as the universe expands, the relative positions of the stars, nebulae, galaxies, etc. change, so the constellations we see are not technically identical to the constellations our ancestors saw when they first reckoned it was getting a bit boring hanging out in the trees all day long. Granted, the changes occur gradually over 10's of thousands of years. Since recorded human history goes back maybe 30,000 years, Rumba's assertion is still valid. Save for a supernova here and there, it's ostensibly the same sky. What has changed remarkably over time is how the different cultures of the world have agreed upon conventional naming of the constellations. The major thrust of this movement occurred during the Renaissance, when the scientific community had finally grown in numbers sufficient to allow enough intellectual snobs to gather in one place and harrumph in unison about a great number of things that we now know are incorrect. For instance, some cultures looked at the Big Dipper and saw an ox cart or a chariot. Still others saw a large bear. Eventually, we all started calling it a bear that looks remarkable like a spoon that's gone 10 rounds with Uri Gellar. Did I mention somewhere in there that Rumba's correct?
  16. He may not run again, Siren; but if I were into Thoroughbreds, I'd breed like crazy to him! :)
  17. The attending vet says that it will be "pretty major surgery" to fix Barbaro's leg. From the replays, it's a twisting, or spiral, type fracture. Keep a good thought for this fine colt.
  18. Bernardini Sweetnorthernsaint Hemingway's Key Brother Derek Greeley's Legacy Platinum Couple Like Now Barbaro DNF Bernardini became the first Preakness winner to have not run in the Derby since Red Bullet in 2000. Please, pray for Barbaro.
  19. Fractures above and below the right hind ankle? Holy sh*t. Hopefully, he didn't wreck the blood supply to that foot. Horse's feet are a major portion of their circulatory system. Damn it. This really sucks. I'm never making that betting joke again.
  20. Damn it. I've always made the joke that the surest way for me to stop a horse in it's tracks is to bet on him. And that's what happened to poor Barbaro today. From his bevaiour, he either pulled his right jack cord, or partial tore it. I just pray it's not as serious as I fear. Lots of banamine, and a fair amount of ace to ease his confusion.
  21. I know, only minutes to go, and I start this up. I'm placing a mythical honeybee on Barbaro to win.
  22. No warnings here, mate. Sounds like you've already got a bug floating about in your system.
  23. Thank you, my dear and wonderful friends! Your responses have bolstered Janelle's confidence, and I really do appreciate it. :)
  24. Thanks, my friends. I've passed your praise on to Janelle, and she really appreciates it. What I had no idea of was she thinks she's doing a terrible job! I certainly haven't done anything to make her think that, but her self-doubt (perhaps due to her MS) is astounding. If any of you have suggestions for how I may help her, please let me know. :)
