  1. Oi Bess! I see ya' favorited our Castaway Trading Co. shop on Etsy just now! Thanks a million! Also, I figure this topic should be bumped :) Sheesh, been a while since I've made port at the Pub... gotta catch up...
  2. I'm very interested to know what their early 18th Century Civilian Shoe looks like. They don't seem to have pictures on their website. If they're good looking, I may just go with those. I''ve always heard good things about Godwin.
  3. I believe the waistcoat actually IS a screen-used Jack Sparrow item. At least, it certainly looks like one. I think the coat may be as well, except... the cuffs seem really narrow in comparison to Jack's... but otherwise the coat looks spot-on. Could be from a stunt costume.
  4. Just a bump in case anyone has more info on the Reconstructing History shoes...
  5. Cool! Though I can point out numerous inaccuracies. Honestly, it looks like the only things that were part of the actual Jack Sparrow costume are the Frock coat and waistcoat. Otherwise, the hat's wrong, the shirt's wrong, the baldric's wrong, the breeches are wrong, the belts are wrong, the boots are wrong, the sash is wrong, and the sword is wrong. Still... epic cool boots... I have to wonder where they actually did come from...
  6. Perfume, definitely. Almost forgot that one. And as for Braveheart, I've always felt folks were unnecessarily harsh in regards to that one. I mean, no, neither the costumery nor the specific sequence of events were precisely accurate. And yeah okay, Gibson went nuts and all - but that was years later, and in my opinion shouldn't retroactively detract from the quality of his previous work. All in all, I felt it was still a well-acted, compelling story, set in a period enjoyable to myself and many others. Got no major gripes.
  7. It's Barbossa with the ol' peg this time around. Theory is, Blackbeard is somehow to blame.
  8. I truly like the idea of exploring the legends ..maybe you could change the fountain of youth thing ( they copy your idea LOL) but keep the El Dorado idea , maybe is what the crates have it ...statues from there or something that can be pieced together like a puzzle and lead the way to it...just trying to help maybe spark a idea?

  9. any more of the "heart of gold" stories? it is very good ... I'm not a novelist but could James be a bastard son of Diego??

  10. Gotta go with Master and Commander. Also gotta love the 90's Bale/Heston Treasure Island, as well as the Curse of the Black Pearl. Those are probably my top 3. Though Kingdom of heaven is up there too (despite popular criticism).
  11. Ah! It would appear you're dead right! I stand corrected sir! Actually, Barbossa's pistol was a little different, the buttcap was shaped like a skull for opn thing, and It had a lot of elegant silver fixtures on black wood Its the one he gives up in singapore at the beginning of the 3rd film. It can be seen in this you tube clip:
  12. Aye Red Wake, that was my primary question as well.
  13. The Commodore is correct. Neither of these pistols were used by Barbossa, and I'm pretty sure neither were even used in the PotC films. Leastways, I never saw them. Barbossa's, as was very correctly mentioned above, was the same pistol used for Dawg Brown in Cutthroat Island. Holywood loves to recycle props. However, these ARE beautiful pistols! The first is a little more ornate than I'd personally fancy (just because it seems to say "fake" to me), but there are historical examples of pistols with similarly ornate carvings and inlays. As far as replicas go, it's not bad. I rather like the Denix stuff being put out, for the most part. The second one, now that's bloody gorgeous! The miquet lock is a really unique look. Does anyone know how functional it was, vs. a "typical" European flintlock design? Actually, Barbossa's pistol was a little different, the buttcap was shaped like a skull for opn thing, and It had a lot of elegant silver fixtures on black wood
  14. Okay, it's definitely going to be a hotly debated topic but here's my take: The first Pirates of the Caribbean film was the only "good" one. As with many of these franchises. However, I still loved #2, mainly for Davy Jones. He was pretty epic, and I think (nearly) everyone can agree on that. One of the best movie villains since Darth Vader, in my opinion. And ultimately, though the plot was a little convoluted, I could still follow it, and found it fun. #3 however lost me completely. I still enjoyed it on a completely superficial level, but I will not say it was a decent film, because it just wasn't. It was practically made of plot-holes, and the characters were, by that point, so far removed from their original incarnations, that I found myself not really giving a damn about any of them. Still, I've watched it several times, and I continue to enjoy it (mostly for Jack), even if I know it's not very good. Kinda' like why I keep going back to watch Cutthroat Island That being said, I'm pretty excited for #4. Yes, it's probably too much of a good thing. But I'm holding out hope. Some of what I've seen so far looks fantastic... other stuff... well, not so much. But I will reserve judgement until I actually watch the movie. When they started talking about 5 though, I can't say I was all that surprised. When they announced 4, it seemed to me that they were gearing up for a second trilogy of films. A good idea? Probably not. But it was pretty much inevitable. And hey, you never know, they could surprise us all and offer some really good yarns. Seems like they're bringing in some fresh blood and sloughing off some of the old, which could be a good thing or could be a bad thing, but there's no way of knowing for sure just yet. Naturally the movies will all be over-the-top fantasy films, and I'm sure they will continue to piss off serious historians and reenactors because of all the false ideas they put in peoples' heads, but ultimately, I couldn't care less about that. As long as there's a good story (which I haven't completely written off just yet), and some fun action and comedy, I'll be pleased enough. They DO create interest in the pirate community, as well as pirate history, and even if they perpetuate some untrue stereotypes, I can definitely get behind them for that reason alone.
  15. Ooooh... toughy... Here's how I see it: treason's a grand thing and all, and your name will probably go down in the history books if it's properly executed. Hell, your hair-brained coup plot might even work, causing you to become the new ruler of Whateverland, whom people plot treason against. But that's just the thing - even if it succeeds, there's all manner of unpleasantness attached. Whereas Mutiny, well it's no very great thing in the eye of history (unless apparently the captain is William Bligh), but you've got plenty of room to escape, a ship of your own, all the rum you can drink (til it runs out at least), and the promise of an exciting new career! So yep, I'm going with mutiny. Okay, that being said... Shaved or bearded?
  16. Oi! Has anyone heard anything about the shoes Reconstructing History is offering? Honestly, I had no idea they even had 17th/18th century shoes until today, as I hadn't been to their site in a loooong time (incidentally, where has Kass disappeared to anyhow?). I really like the shape of the shoes - much less blocky and square than the Loyalist ones. I might be interested in getting a pair, but as always, I'm nervous about getting shoes that I haven't heard any reviews of yet. Here's the link: http://www.reconstructinghistory.com/late-17th-century-soldiers-shoes.php?s=&c=208&q=1&p=694&w=21
  17. Onion bottle. I just like the uniqueness of the shape. King William or Queen Anne? (As for the above, yep, I meant "cocked!" Sorry! Dunno where that pesky "r" slipped in)
  18. Fresh water, for obvious reasons. Mainly because I couldn't come up with a cheeky reason to say salt water Corcked hat or knit cap?
  19. I love this thread. I have nothing to add at present, other than to say, once again, that I love this thread. Please carry on
  20. Grog would've been a sort of watered-down rum, sometimes made with lime juice, and sometimes a few other ingredients. Personally I think it tastes like gosa. Anyhoo... Cloth for clothing, leather for accessories. Unless it's slightly cold out and I want to look EXTRA badass. Duel with swords or pistols?
  21. Aye, I agree GAoP, if we're talking about reenacting. Better clothes, better gear. Cooler stuff in general, really. But I still stand by my feeling that Buccaneers had it easier: life on the beach, forever barbequeing? Heck yes. Aaaaaand... buckles. SHINY buckles! Ooooh... shiney... Wait, what was I doing? Oh, right... um... Hard tack or "questionable" salamagundi?
  22. That thing looks surprisingly steampunk! Or perhaps "swashpunk"?
  23. Buccaneer. Easier life, and lots of food! I shall re-pose my previous: Mellenium Falcon or Serenity? (hey, they're both pirate ships! If perhaps a tad... non-traditional...)
