  1. I believe Reconstructing History (http://store.reconst...hing/shoes.html) and Loyalist Arms (http://www.loyalista...andsandals.html) currently carry the two most accurate reproductions of GAoP shoes you're likely to find for under $150.
  2. QFT And while Bo is probably right, all told, I rather like John C. Reilly's rendition of "Fathom the Bowl" (even though, as previously stated, the man has an atrocious singing voice). And Eliza Carthy's "Rolling Sailor" is quite a decent song. "Hog-Eye Man," "One Spring Morning," "Turkish Revelry," and the purely instrumental take on "Shenandoah" are all fairly palatable as well. Not outstanding perhaps, but palatable. Sting's other song on the album, "Shallow Brown," is quite haunting, and the odd sort of New Orleans blues/rock take on "High Barbary" is, if nothing else, very innovative. But beyond that... yeah... pretty awful stuff.
  3. Ahoy mates! The Castaway Trading Co. is setting all canvas for the new year, and adding a ship-load (get it?) of new swag to our store! Check out all our fresh stock, including our newest leather-wrapped bottle, this time in olive-green! http://www.etsy.com/listing/91040102/piratesteampunk-glass-bottle-olive-green
  4. I would say that's just about the right philosophy!
  5. Thanks a million for all the info mate! Very good to know! And if we do in fact take that route, I'll be sure to hit you up!
  6. Hahaha... now that's just freakin brilliant!
  7. Heh... not sure if I should be proud or ashamed...
  8. I think most fall into the "cats in a bag" category, unfortunately. It was a grand experiment, but sadly it wasn't what a lot of people (myself included) were hoping it would be. That being said, I still have quite a few of the songs from said album on my iPod. Several really are excellent, and even some of the kinda' awful ones (like who decided John C. Reilly could sing?) are totally awesome simply BECAUSE they're kinda' awful - and are therefore very authentic sounding.
  9. Excellent! And yes, Gertie, I'm dead-set on getting down there this year, and hoping against hope that nothing will get in my way... erm... again. This time around the plan is for me and the lass to bring down a bunch of stock and set up a Castaway Trading Co. booth at the festival for the weekend. We really want to start getting into the circuit and putting our products out there a bit so as to give the ol' business a bit more visibility. I'm pretty excited! I'm sure I'll run into you when I'm there, and I'll finally be able to buy you a round, or otherwise do something to show appreciation for all the help and friendliness you've shown me :) But at any rate, right now I'm mostly concerned with vending info, so I suppose I should try contacting them. I want to make sure the fees are reasonable for us, etc. before I make any commitments on that front, because we're kinda' trying to plan our year for the company as soon as possible. Right now, the two "must hit" events of the year, for me at least, are the Norcal festival, and Pirates in Paradise.
  10. Hey folks! I sort of dug up the 2011 Norcal thread at first, but I figured since my questions were related to the 2012 Northern California Pirate Festival, and there doesn't seem to be a dedicated thread for that event just yet, I should probably start one. Ant any rate, does anyone know anything about Norcal for 2012? I'm pretty much looking for any info on it I can find, but I'm specifically interested in where to look for information about vending. Looks like the website hasn't been updated for quite a while, and I'm not finding much other info around the web. Do they have a vendor application form at all? Or is it something we just have to contact the vendor coordinator about? I know it's quite a way off still, but I also know the festival is bloody HUGE, so I wanted to get a jump on it so I don't miss my chance. And furthermore, I figured this could be a good early-start thread for folks who are planning to be there to sound off and let others know they're going.
  11. Hey, so I know this is total thread necromancy, but does anyone know where to look for information about vending at Norcal in 2012? Looks like the website hasn't been updated for a while. I know it's a way off still, but I also know the festival is bloody HUGE, so I wanted to get a jump on it so I don't miss my chance. Any info is extremely appreciated! Thanks!
  12. I'm loving these! Got any other shots of the cutlass hilt?
  13. Heh, yeah... I don't generally touch the Star Wars fan forums. Man, people think historical reenactors are picky about accuracy and attention to detail? Hah! They've got nothin' on hardcore sci-fi fans. At any rate, I'm not part of this forum, so I'm not sure if it's quite what you're looking for, or even if it's one of the forums you've already mentioned as being impossible to get into (at least without becoming totally disenfranchised), but one I keep hearing a lot about is the Replica Prop Forum, or the RPF. They're not strictly Star Wars, but they've got a lot of Star Wars fans and costumers on there. Still, there are people who are working on all kinds of costuming and prop projects, from Indiana Jones to Tangled. I hear that some of the folks over there can definitely take some of it too seriously, and from what I've seen, the concept of screen-accuracy goes well beyond obsession, but still, they might be more open to newcomers. I've been thinking of joining up myself for some Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean related stuff. Just a thought :)
  14. Well, I've got an Etsy store, and I'd love to spread around a link, but we don't have a banner made up yet. However, I know we'd like to get one made soon, and when we do, we'd love to share it! This is a great idea!

  16. Yeah, the Tandy near me always has tons of rabbit pelts. I'd definitely recommend them. Also, this thread totally needs to be resurrected. It was a great idea.
  17. I don't believe I ever put in my Etsy shop on this list, so here it is: http://www.etsy.com/shop/CastawayTradingCo Enjoy! :)
  18. This is definitely a good question though, and prompts me to ask specifically: is there any evidence to suggest ties or tassels were used on collars at all to keep them closed? Or on cuffs, for that matter?
