  1. I have ordered the shirt pattern from Reconstructing History for my first hand sewn, self made article of clothing, and while I will most certainly make a white shirt, I would like to know options of other solids, stripes or patterns (other than blue check) that would be a good option. For starters would any of these be acceptable? http://www.fabrics-store.com/first.php?got...;fabric_id=1042 http://www.fabrics-store.com/first.php?got...;fabric_id=1023 http://www.fabrics-store.com/first.php?got...;fabric_id=1027 Thanks!
  2. THanks all! Man, did I miss that? I looked at that page before I posted this. I must have killed too many brain cells.
  3. Anyone have any info on where to buy tix for the Grand Ball? Thanks!
  4. Okay, I ordered a pair of the Buffalo Sandals that were mentioned in anther thread. Sorry i couldn't find it. Well, they reek of diesel fuel! I remember someone mentioning this prior, and I am hoping someone has found a "cure" for these stink sandals. I am planning on soaking them in a degreaser, like Simple green. Anyone have any luck with de-stinking these beasts???? Thanks!
  5. Agreed it would have been more interesting to see.. and I am surprised the pirate did not at least wound the knight's horse at that close a distance...I guess they didn't have a trick animal to use for the scenario...damn but tis so easy to take down one horse with the weapons the pirate was allowed to use.... but they do show the computer "test" results toward the end... and they show the number of kills estimated per weapon tested... both pistol and buss well out numbered anything the knight used regarding kills... in my opinion, the best part was after the pirate drops the knight with the buss, he grabs the treasure and runs off to the beach... notices the knight get up and start chasing him again. The pirate rolls his eyes and mumbles something along the lines of oh bloody hell... now that was great!! That was hilarious. - a nice touch.
  6. And I love that hat! Below is proabbyl the best picture of me in the hat in question at Searle's Raid back in March. If you sort through the images in This Photobucket Gallery you will see plenty of more pics of the hat from other angles. Michael Nice! I like! I searched around a bit and found one for around $50 that is black and 100% wool. It seems to be a "real" hat with a leather? liner sewn in. I took the "pilgrim" ribbon off it and - well, it rocks in my humble opinion. It's somewhere between the Dutch sailor (mentioned in this thread) and the Pyle recreation. I seriously have laughed at how cool I think it is several times this evening when I walked by a mirror. Yes, I'm wearing it around tonight... :-)
  7. Thanks for the offer - good price. Will you be selling at the Black Beard Festival? Absolutely!!! My fourth year!!! Cool - I'll see you there - for a hanger and ???? :-)
  8. Shoe Update I just received these hours ago, so I may have another opinion later, but here is my initial observation/review. Toes: Nice and square Sole: Low heel, but looks to be all leather with nails in the heels. Really a bit slick as to be expected. Last: They are made left and right Buckle: Comes with buckle that looks like a mini DD. However, they work, but do not quite connect to the straps correctly. Once they are buckled, it's hard not to have the center piece (that goes through the hole) a bit, uh, erect if you will. Leather: Seems to be a high quality, comfortable, if not a little thin. Comfort: Been wearing them for a couple hours around the house, with no socks, and they are amazingly comfortable. Almost slipper like in comfort. Style: High tongue, square toe = pretty nice. I personally feel these are a little more correct than the Colonial era Fugawee shoes, if you take the left and right aspect out of the equation. Cost: Shipped from the Netherlands, with buckles, and shipping: around $140 Questions? I'll try to answer them. I will say these are INCREDIBLY comfortable right out of the box. BTW: They arrived in a used cardboard box, bubble wrap and nothing else. Not that it mattered much.
  9. Thanks for the offer - good price. Will you be selling at the Black Beard Festival?
  10. Thanks! I'm sure it's beautiful and worth every dollar. I'm just not in the market right now for something that high end. Hopefully in the coming year I might! I would always rather spend more money on something that will make me happy for as long as I own it, than buy something that i grow tired of quickly. Thanks again!
  11. BEAUTIFUL! I almost hate to ask, but I must, um, er, how much would that set me booty back?
  12. Thanks Michael, I'll owe you a few beers (or rums) when I see you at HBBF. :-)
  13. I've been looking around for a good (correct) hanger that's affordable. I've check Loyalists, but there's look to be too late, or just not right. Any suggestions would help. Thanks!
  14. Many many thanks Capn' Sterling! BTW - I checked out your crew's site, you guys look very nice! My wife commented, "Looks like they are in a movie" - I'm sure she wasn't referring to POTC... Thanks again!
  15. But I'm workin on my like totally new impression man, the dread pirate Keanu Reeves... It will be like totally excellent! Capn' Keanu - NICE! Would your impression be really awful like his acting?
  16. I'm not an expert at all, but while researching food for a pirate theme party, I read that pirates ate a lot of Solomon Grundy (is that the name they used for turtle soup?) while on ship, as well as hard tack - those nasty cracker bread things. Needless to say, I didn't go that route for the buffet. Boucaniers seemed to have grilled copious amounts of boar and cattle that had been released on various Caribbean Islands. Hell that sounds like a good time, grilling and large amounts of grog. Hope i helped a little...
  17. Thanks Michael - you are very PC! I have costume clothing and have been making the transition over to period correct stuff for the last few months. Needless to say, I appreciate the wealth of knowledge here.
  18. HEy there! Thanks for all the great info. Although I am a beginner at this, i did notice the cuffs, and lack of slits in the sides of the coat. The brocade one, well, it's not even the same pattern and looks really incorrect to me. What I didn't pick up on was the neck line. I saw "no collar" and immediately thought it was okay. I'll need to spend some more time peering at that. I also noticed the cuffs were not quite right and there didn't seem to be enough buttons down the front. That said, I do have a guy making me a middle class early 1700s style coat. He uses the patterns from reconstructing history. BTW - the lady making this ebay coat replied that she doesn't use a pattern. THat is a nice costume coat, one of the better I've seen. But personally, that's not what i am looking for. Thanks for all your insight and perspective and knowledge sharing!
  19. Found this on Ebay today. The material is wool, which is a good start. I've researched the design and it doesn't seem too bad for a semi-fancy frock. I think I see a coouple of problems, so I sent a question to the maker to see what pattern / documentation (if any) there is. Anyway, for fun, I thought I would throw this out here and get all the expert opinions (from a period correct viewpoint). Thanks! Ebay Frock Coat
  20. Oh! Here's a reference pic I came across a while back. The details: 1709 by Willem van Mieris, a Dutch painter. It appears to show a sea-captain and a ship's boy. note the captain's "mariners'" cuffs and neck-cloth, and the boy's cuff's and bare feet. I say - check out that freakin big ass hat! Nw i know he's listed as a sailor, not a pirate, but that's pretty darn close!
  21. Hmmm.. I have thought that the "copotain" hat was the late Ren-style tall hat wit a small brim, kinda rolled on the outside edges and pitched to the rear. You know, I was just thinking the irony of a pirate in a puritan hat...
