  1. RIT has a pretty good dye remover... depending on what you ultimately want to do with it bleach could have a cool effect though. Sometimes blacks bleach out pinks/ reds or greens... I've had all sorts of wacky experiences with the stuff in my teenage years. =P I would cut a few pieces and play with different concentrations of bleach, making sure to wash out and rinse thoroughly, otherwise you will totally destroy the fabric which, could be a cool effect in itself. Then, you can either leave the color it turns or dye over it with browns, reds or greens or use home-made natural dyes to get more earthy, distressed tones. You cal always try just leaving it outside for awhile in an area that gets a lot of sun... Then just use it as is.. Lots of options...
  2. ah bugga. Why does everything have to happen that weekend? Maybe I'll journey to Albany on my own on Saturday. Anyone else going to be there?
  3. When will they be where? I haven't found any information except for when they were going to be in NYC and I wasn't going to try... I did want to see the half moon again... You know, half moon marauders and all...
  4. I have an 8 quart to feed my forces... My other one is a 4 quart I think, and that one is just never big enough for anything other than veggie sides. But then again, I'm usually feeding more than a few hungry pirates...
  5. ah... Thanks. This is all just becoming an obsession... it's painful. lol
  6. Yes, I've seen that Norah Waugh description. I wish it was not so vague. Sadly, I do not own that book (too expensive still...) that jacket example goes with it, I assume. And don't get me wrong, it's not as if I am "outlawing" them completely. It's just something I've taken off my list as even that example isn't for our year. My fear is things change in 20 years. Personally, I would love to have the jacket as part of my kit. And at some point I'm sure I will... I know it sounds like I am being too picky. But better to start picky with less, with the right stuff than start with a lot that is wrong or inappropriate for is my philosophy.... Again. just my opinion. Again, I have NOTHING against Jackets.... *sigh*
  7. yes, that is what I mean. I used the term "bodice" as that is how I had hear them described before. But as we had chosen "1709" as our year, it would make them inappropriate as the examples that I have seen (only in books, mind you) are from later than that. There is also the English Jacket or something like that, which seems to be much earlier (mid-ish 1600's if I am rembering correctly... I'd have to re-look). Since we have a specific year now, it make the clothing much more specific... In some ways easier, in some ways not. Nothing's perfect (OBVIOUSLY!!!!) but we are working on it...
  8. My dear captain, one reason I have not put in my "two cents" is because my initial standards were developed with the aid of many people here... Do they really need to hear their ideas spouted back? =P Also, please note that these were from the very beginning and HAVE CHANGED. My crew, please either check our discussion forums or contact me directly if you are confused... Some changes do include my (total) "ban" of bucket boots which will be enforced even with a sword tip to my throat. And no bodice jackets for the ladies, I think they are too early or late for the year we chose. Oh, it should also be noted (mostly for my crew) that this did not go into the fabrics/ materials, buttons, etc. But is just a list of what they should have, Again, my crew should contact me directly.... I created this list back in oh, January, when I first joined the pub and the crew was trying to get our stuff together. Everyone has been so helpful and I really appreciate it. I've learned a lot and have been guided to learn plenty on my own. Just ask Kate, it's an obsession. And captain if you could burn (or yea, I guess it would melt) that cravat that would be great.... =P And remember, I did get that whip from Shamus.
  9. "I'm a pirate that I be I sail in me ship upon the sea..." You are quite accomplished at that song, and the audience always enjoys it as I recall....
  10. No way man, they TOTALLY teach common sense in schools, it was that thing written by that guy a long time ago about stuff.... Problem is common sense is not common between populations. The assumption that everyone shares the same "common sense" in terms of safety is naive and dangerous. Generally speaking, it makes perfect sense to fire into an open, privately owned field. THAT is the common part of the sense. The rest has to do with how much you know, about ricochet physics and all that. Plus the addition of the shot, the neighboring houses, etc.... (though my personal belied is that it should be common sense not to fire an actual shot UNLESS there was some experiment taking place that we don't know about- about cannon fire, etc. Maybe? anyway...) I'm getting a little tangled in my thoughts... but this is not common sense stuff. This is going to go slightly off topic but, I would really like to see crews getting together and creating safety standards for events- guidelines for newbies PRINTED and even signed contracts for individual crew members. As of yet, black powder is not all that regulated, although I think in NY you cannot have powder and shot or it IS considered a weapon, but there SHOULD be some sort of test. Especially when it comes to a cannon, even if there is nothing being fired from it, it is still very dangerous. Too much powder, improper use... its really frightening. I would like to see a course, even if it is informally done, for safety purposes. Sorry, that was my rant. I've been accused of acting like a mommy, but I want all my "boys" to be safe, and I am not afraid to beat the hell out of them if they are not acting appropriately. - All this said, perhaps another thread (stickied?) is in order for safety, resources, ideas etc... or is that somewhere and I haven't seen it? I'd really like a quiz.... Sorry again for the discombobulated thought process.
  11. hehe.. Yis, we are all a bit mad aren't we? Hm... Now what could Monsieur Rene do for funds? are you not a pirate?
  12. Why thank youm Sir! Just remember I am also married...
  13. etsy is sort of like ebay in a way, where people can buy and sell hand made and vintage goods. It makes it easy and accessible for everyday people to sell their wares without opening an expensive online store, or provide another venue for those who have that store already. Their fees are so minimal compared to ebay. I am very impressed with it so far. They offer a ton of support, and its pretty easy to get set up.
  14. Thanks guys! Ransom, I LOVE your jewelry. I was just looking at "Night Rose" if only I had money to spend on my own self! *sigh* Beautiful work, truly.
  15. Okay, I'll try to be a little less of a pain now. lol! I set up an etsy store at the suggestion of a few people on here. This store is pretty much just in hopes to fund mine and hubby's reenacting hobby. =) www.LadyBrowersTreasures.etsy.com Right now I've got shirts, shifts, snap sacks, caps and some crochet stuff on there and hope to be adding plenty more this week. Thanks for your support!
  16. Period games for kiddies (with booty of course!) is always a plus. If you have something the kids want, it brings parents over, and if you are trying to raise money for a children's charity just put a jar for donations where you are doing the games. Little crafts are great too, if you can get a hold of a ton of corn husks, corn husk dolls are a great little take away and very seasonally appropriate. Yarn dolls (or ghosts!) are good too.
  17. Lady Brower, with your tag line "Hell Hath No Fury like the Wrath of a Woman... No that's it. She doesn't need a reason." It does not settle well, that you are taking such a keen interest in this topic. 'What kind of rope would one use?" sounds like the beginning of a plan. I shudder to think about it. tehehe... I have no idea what you are talking about. Bright, I like that rope one. it's purdy.... but it does look like it is separate ropes then knotted together. Do you happen to know how that handle was fashioned?
  18. I was the victim of a bully... *Stiff* But then I punched him in the face
  19. Thank you darling! I am in the process of doing so after your suggestion, but I just realized I don't have any of my pictures on this computer! Hubby took them all with the laptop when he went to Dover. *sigh* I will let you *all* know when it is up and running. I like you picture by the way!
  20. My local library has this series and we watched it here a few months ago. the general consensus was that it was really funny. I liked when the guy left and went to the pub. lol. I don't think it would ave been as effective a reality show if actual reenactors had done it... Part of the point was the contrast to modern life and what people were used to. The fact that we do this on a regular basis really would make it to easy and not have the same impact for the general public. Like someone said about the kids being bored when they got home, that is the sort of outcome people need to see. You know what I mean? It was really over dramatic at times, but over all I recommend throwing it on if you have to have a marathon sewing party. =) If nothing else it is very amusing.
  21. If you've ever seen the movie, the reason it is painted that way is because the model refuses to show her head/hair uncovered, so the artist has her wrap her hair that way. I know it's not a good resource but it is still an interesting explanation for the odd covering.
  22. Chole, that makes sense about the wool and the layering. Thank you!
  23. On another note... I've been trying to find some cool weather coverings. I am toying with the idea of knitting a cap in this luscious silk yarn I picked up. But I am having a hard time finding any sort of documentation for anything warm other than cloak hoods or heavier linen caps... In my noodle I'm thinking (scary, I know!) that a white wool cap in the same style would be almost indistinguishable from a linen cap in any pictures, and a camelot hood in wool would be quite warm. Perhaps with a knit lining? hmmmm.... thoughts? Has anyone come across any warm and cozies? Documentation is always appreciated. =)
