I;ve seen cannon for sale that are machined as a tube of different sorts and then have the trunions attached in various fashion. 1) trunions sweat fitted into milled pockets 2) trunions sweat fitted into milled pockets and then welded at the joint 3) Trunions JB Welded into milled pockets 4) Trunions welded into milled pockets 5) Trunions threaded and screwed into tapped, flat bottom pockets, then welded. Milled pockets have flat bottoms ( as opposed to a drilled hole, which has the drill point at the bottom. Your opinions on these methods? For the cannon owners among us, how are your trunions attached to your long guns? I have all bronze guns, with the tru…

Can someone tell me why the dog-lock evolved into the flintlock? It seems to me the external dog is a more sure-fire safety catch than the internal half-cock mechanism and is certainly easy enough engage. Is there some other advantage to the flintlock?

Our group has been doing re-enactment at various festivals which utilize black powder either in our show or for demo purposes. We have been approached by local park/town representatives claiming we need a "black powder permit" in order to carry and/or discharge our pistols. We never carry, nor do we even own any actual ammunition (balls). I have attempted to research this issue via the internet, letters to our local town, police and parks deptartments and even to the ATF with either no response or they do not know. This caused us some consternation at our first Long Island Pirate Festival when a parks dept rep stated we needed such a permit but was unable to provide any d…

I have a fairly new Excaliber meant for hanging on the wall. Last week a snake got into my bedroom and the sword was used to kill it as it tried to attack. It was the longest thing we could find before getting bit. Under the carpet is cement so the sword while getting the snake, also took a heavy banging against the cement. Now the handle of the sword is very loose. I see there is a cap on the top but I dont know how to open it to get to the screw inside to tighten everything up. Does anyone know if there is a special tool to open this? Thank you!

Well now that the new and shiny (psychological) has warn off of my doglock blunderbuss it's time to start some modification work on it. First things first, I used some MEK to strip the finish off of the stock (bare stock, everything removed of course). I will say, the stock on these is VERY poorly done. There's considerable damage in a few places which have been quasi-repaired with wood glue. This includes a palm length crack at the end of the stock that with the barrel out and the finished removed I can see daylight through and a large area broken in the in-letting of the lock which was then patched back in to place. Considering what I bought this gun for and my own…

Once upon a time (roughly 4 months ago) I was at our home in Thailand and was most curious when my brother-in-law commented that his gun worked the same way as the small cannon I had mailed to my wife (22 caliber) that I had turned on a lathe. After several days I was able to get a scope on everything. He is hunting rats in rice fiels with bait set up at a range of about 10 yard with a muzzle loading gun (roughly 50 caliber) that he was loading 4 to 5 small balls (twice the size of BB's) for each shot. The gun has a barrel of approximatly 36 inches with a hammer swinging perpindicular to the barrel the hammer hits a paper cap (similar to to what you would find on a kid…

while continuing my search for information on Trunnions and Dolphins, I came across this article dealing with The Guns of the SantĂssimo Sacramento by JOHN F. GUILMARTIN, JR. This ship sank in May of 1668, the article deals with gun founding practice and has some nice diagrams. Of particularly interesting note is that many of these guns were cast with wrought iron core locating devices, something I had never heard of before. Though the diagrams show both on centerline trunnions and off centerline trunnions and Dolphins, I am still no closer to understanding the place of the placement of trunnions and dolphins on the timeline of ships guns of the 17th Cent. But those…

Just a heads up, NOT FEARMONGERING! http://www.libertyforall.net/?p=1398 http://virginiashootingsportsassociation.b...rt-gun-ban.html http://blogs.usatoday.com/sky/2009/03/airport-chec-11.html According to the NRA site this has moved forward and may take effect june 1st 2009. I suggest keeping a weather eye on this for those of you planning on flying with your guns. Also addressed is the un-precedented rise in luggage theft at airports by TSO's and other employees of the airports. Thought some of you should be aware, that's all. Bo

I have been looking at various guns for the early buccaneer period. I must assume that they were smoothbores during that time. Does anyone have any information on the standards of the era??? Animal

I'm currently reading a book on the English Civil War and they mention "Firelocks". The author provides a brief description that still leaves me what the heck these are. He implies they are doglocks. Also mentions the snaphause (spelling). Anyone have knowlege of this term?

I usually shoot paper cartridges, but sometimes PRB too. For those times, I have a powder horn, but it can be a few weeks between shoots. So, I'm wondering what disadvantages there may be to keeping powder in the horn?

Cartridges? 1 2

I have some basic questions regarding cartridges. I've seen many references to them (such as the cartridge box from the whydah, etc.) but am not really sure what they are. Are these paper cartridges like the two links below? Are the cartridges just pre-measured powder that are torn open and poured down the barrel or is the whole thing rammed down the barrel? Does this make for a good blank load without wadding, etc? Any thoughts, reccomendations, etc on the subject? http://www.lazyjacks.org.uk/cartrdge.htm http://3rdalabama.org/roll_cart.htm

One of my main sword dealers is now carrying some fire arms too. All I know is that they come in a kit and someone up north is putting them together for them. I asked if he would be into trading some swords for a few and the first one I am into is the big boy. I was hoping someone might be able to identify the kit and if it is decent. I do trust my dealer and he syas they fire great and that he has one himself that he often uses. I just thought I would ask. I have plenty of black powder firearms but this would be my first blunderbuss. Any info would help. If it is as nice as I hope, I plan on getting several and customizing them. Adding some gems here or some en…

It may appear primitive, but this cannon marks the point when Britannia began to rule the waves. Britain's 'first weapon of mass destruction' was discovered on a warship that sank in the Channel in 1592. It could fire a cannonball at close to the speed of sound - fast enough to punch through the solid oak planks of an enemy galleon 100 yards away. The extraordinary power of the 7ft 'Elizabethan supergun' was revealed when a replica was test-fired in a disused quarry. Mensun Bound, a marine archaeologist at Oxford University, said: 'No gun of this type and period had ever been tested before and the results were surprising. 'Muzzle velocities were achieved that were alm…

I saw this advertised in the back pages of Seafaring magazine, and thought to bring it to the attention of the company. Maybe I should buy one myself, so I can arm my own pirate vessel...which is an 8 ft long inflatable pontoon boat, so there's no way I can mount, say, a 12 pounder on the thing. But this would be handy indeed...and wouldn't the girl pirates just squeal and coo over it... What is it, ye ask? Why, clap yer deadlights here... http://corkmortar.com/ Now, you too can bombard Copenhagen!

I came into possession of a sword today. It is rusted in spots (sat in the bed of a pickup for who knows how long) and doesn't have an edge. The guy was going to hang it and another on the wall. I was wondering the best way to clean it and make it more presentable. When I get some photos taken, I'll post them. It is stamped with Spain on one side and Toledo on the other near the hand guard. it has some weight to it. Animal

A couple of things I've picked up in the last month or so... The top two are VZ24 Mausers, they don't look like much but the actions are pristine(under the grime). I'm going to sporterize one and keep the other military. The bottom is a semi sporterized Arisaka. Say what you will about them, but I'm a fan...

Some time ago, I was approached to make a ship's surgeon knife with this similar design. I never made that knife and I dont even remember who the customer was. The spirit of that design lives on in this knife. This is a simple forged knife that is left almost 1/2" on the spine. The tip is quite thin allowing for precise cuts and the middle of the blade is almost a wedge alowing for easy limb removal. Here you can see the overall integral design. Here you can see the damascus pattern. Here is a picture in hand with a shot of the spine at the bottem. Here you can see the point. Nothing fancy. I thought I would share this with you all. It would serve as a nice k…
