I've decided that I want to try my hand at making a sword. I am no stranger to metal work in general (of the cutting, shaping, grinding variety - I am no smith nor am I a welder) and I think shaping something from a good piece of steel (thinking a leaf spring) is within my abilities but I've no pattern to work from. Does anyone have any good detail drawings giving general proportions of a period hanger or cutlass? I'm looking for something with a relatively short blade certainly within 24 inches or so and with a relatively simple guard. I may be able to pull off a shell guard but I'll need to practice my chiseling technique. I plan to post a series of step by step pi…

Ahoy all! What light can you shed for me on flintlock guns of the F.I.E. label? I find a lot of information on their semi-autos and revolvers, but not so much on their flinters.

I am looking for a good way to carry my sword without it pulling my pants down :) and dragging the ground. I hve seen some photo's of people with straps that go across your shoulders. Anyone have any ideas on where I could get one?

Friday before last we gave a friend an impressive send off. He had passed away from cancer and as a proper send off we loaded his ashes into a mortar, took another friends boat out and gave him the proper send off befitting an old pirate and treasure hunter. Here are some pictures. . .

Well I have been working on a new blunderbuss and things are starting to near completion so I thought I would post some pictures. This is a "cut down" for lack of a better description of a blunderbuss but not a pistol. I have found several originals and except for the lock this is actually quite close.

Okay, if this is real then this is obviously going to drive up the bidding, but I'm not bidding until I know more. So far the seller has not responded to my queries. So, look at this: 18th Century Flintlock Copy. What do you think? Elaborately packaged non-firing replica or functional set?

Low and behold, I went with a friend to the hardware store this morning and since his wife was along we stopped at a couple yard sales on the way back. At one there was a small bit set up across the steet on a single table. As I drew closer I could see simply a pile of clothes . . . YET as I drew closer still there be a couple stocks on the table, rapidly I saw that one was a simple 12 gauge shotgun (nothing special and under closer examination the stock was broken) and the other a black powder rifle. The box next to the rifle was filled with all the "goodies" including ramers, caps, adjustable measure, flask, and much more as it was almost shoe box size. There was e…

I wasn't sure which was the appropriate forum to put this in so please move it if you deem it more acceptable someplace else. I recently purchased a "traditions yorktown cannon" (See one here) for a ridiculously good deal from a local hat and commercial fixture store. My ultimate goal is to make something similiar to this: Step one will involve a naval carriage. Does anyone know of any good plans or scale drawings or even a set of measurements from a period carriage? I know the cannon style itself is a little late but that doesn't mean I can't be correct with the surrounding details. I have found some decent info online but everything is later except for a bad per…

Thought some might like to see this: Desptie the possible embellishment of it being used on a man-o'-war, the info is pretty good. The red paint reference is pretty cool. Bo

I have been looking around at muskets, carbines, and blunderbusses. A lot of what I have seen are from later periods, mostly rev War. Does anyone know where to get GAoP period pieces? OR What is acceptable? My problem is I am a stickler for authenticity. I wouldn't be able to handle it if I got a 1777 musket while playing a 1709 pirate. Thanks.

I have a CVA .50 cal. Plains pistol. It was a kit that I bought and put together but the wedge tenon (thank you Cascabell for helping me with the right term) is missing. I called Dixie Gun Works and Deer Creek but no luck. Deer Creek keeps telling me I need a piece called a dove tail that I drill through myself but I know what the missing piece looks like because this was the second kit I had built of this style. _________ \________/ Looks like that but hollow on the inside so the wedge pin would fit through it and the piece itself slides into a cut on the underside of the barrell. Does anyone know where I can get this piece from and hopefully before Sept. 18th?

I know variations of this have been posted before, I just can't find them: Benerson Little, in his book "The Sea Rover's Practice" quotes Esquemelin and Labat in describing a particular musket having a barrel of 57 inches and .75 calibre. My question is where we can find these muskets; or something close to them. Loyalist Arms has the 1690s doglock and Middlesex Village has the French 1717 musket which IMHO would work in a pinch. Does anyone here know of other suppliers who can meet this requirement? Obviously anyone portraying a traditional buccaneer will use whatever they have that falls within the time frame they wish, individually. I'm just looking to m…

I just came into some bar stock, 4-1/2" OD x 2-1/2" ID alloy steel 4140 , already NDT'd by the Navy. 10 feet of it. Enough to turn 4 swivel guns or 3 carriage guns, or 10 hellacious thundermugs. Any ideas, folks?

I am working on a new musket and was wondering about the trigger assembly for a shaphaunce lock musket. There is a small bar that must slide down and engage the trigger. Does anybody have any knowledge with these locks?
